Season ends with defeat--------11th May 2011

First Team

Taverners 0 Ipswich Thistle 5

The curtain finally came down on a highly disappointing season for the Tavs with a home match against Ipswich Thistle who needed the points to cement their title challenge.

An early Thistle goal set the alarm bells ringing but the Tavs fought very hard for the rest of the first half, only to concede two more just before half-time.

Thankfully, we managed to raise our spirits after the break and restricted the Thistle to two more goals. Andy Lambert shone while Tom Brooks and Matty Wray's efforts were tireless in midfield. Our last line of defence, Vaughn Gledhill produced a string of fine saves.

Thistle are now 99.9% certain to win the Premier League championship and we congratulate them for a fine and well-deserved achievement.

We were pleased to have a full compliment of substitutes and thank particularly Trev and Julien who didn't see any action.

Pilky makes the headlines whilst Frank recovers--------5th May 2011

The Evening Star Reported on Pilky's recent incident..... Get well soon messages to Claydon Primary School headteacher after brain op drama

That is the message today from staff and pupils at a school in Claydon after hearing the news their headteacher is in hospital after being rushed in for emergency brain surgery. Gary Pilkington, head at Claydon Primary School, was taken ill while playing football on Sunday morning.

The 40-year-old was playing for his regular team Taverners FC against Holbrook Swan in the Flare Recruitment League Premier Division clash when he started complaining of a “burning pain” at the back of his head.

After paramedics were called to Reade Field in Holbrook the teacher was transferred to the specialist neurological unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where it is understood he is being treated after suffering a bleed on the brain.

A spokesman for the hospital said Mr Pilkington’s condition is now stable.

But as the news spread of the much-loved head teacher’s condition staff and pupils at the school in Lancaster Way sent their messages of goodwill, urging him to get better soon.

Stepping in, in Mr Pilkington’s absence Mary Ashcroft, deputy headteacher, said: “Everyone at Claydon Primary School is missing Gary and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Meanwhile, concerned team-mates sent their own messages to a “team stalwart” and “dedicated player”.

Club secretary Bob Bullamore said Mr Pilkington has been playing for the club, which is based at Greshams Sports and Social Club in Tuddenham Road, for many years.

“He has been a stalwart member of Taverners for many years,” he said. “He has played many, many games for us.

“He is a utility player, he can play any position you ask him.

“Everyone at the club wishes him well and a very speedy recovery, we are looking forward to having him back.”

And a spokesman for Holbrook Swan FC said: “We hope he makes a quick recovery, everyone at the club wishes him the best.”

Latest news is that Pilky is expected to make a full recovery, although feeling a bit battered at the moment, and is due to be allowed to go home shortly!

Meanwhile, Bob is pleased to report that he spoke to Frank today. He sounded upbeat and on the road to recovery after his operation on Monday. Frank is still in the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

One of his first words was to ask after Pilky!

Gallant Effort--------4th May 2011

Reserves

Taverners Reserves 0 Ipswich Hospitals 1

The reserves began their final league game in confident style, moving the ball well and with Matty Wray showing up well in the middle of midfield and Duncan Southgate controlling things at the back.

However, too often we attempted one pass too many and, when possession was given away, Hospitals counter-attacked dangerously. They hit the bar in the firsthalf.

The second half saw Hospitals come into the match more and eventually they netted the winner with a headed goal from a corner. The Tavs tried hard to come back but lacked penetration and direction in attack.

Team: Gledhill, Fisk (Chapman), Leeks (Baxter(Aldred)), Southgate, Cunningham, Strutt, Bowman, Wray, Burgess, Cox, Hollinsworth.

Holbrook Spirit--------1st May 2011

First Team

Holbrook Swan 3, Taverners 0

The first team's visit to Holbrook to face the Swan was completely overshadowed by the
illness which befell Gary Pilkington so suddenly. Our best wishes are with Pilky and his family.

Those who made up the Tavs scratch team could feel proud of their efforts in battling for 90 minutes and letting nobody down at all. It would be unfair to mention individuals because everyone played their part in full.

Team: Gledhill, Beaney, Lambert, Bullamore (Holmes), Cunningham, Atabaky, Pilkington (Hollinsworth), Chapman, Burgess, Aldred, Wray.

Midweek Misery--------27th April 2011

Reserves

Bramford Cock 5, Taverners reserves 0

Setting out to pack the midfield, the Tavs managed to frustrate Bramford for much of the first half, defending resolutely and battling for every ball further forward. In addition, every effort was made to support Daren Stevens and we certainly found gaps in the Bramford rearguard.

Bramford grabbed the lead with an untidy goal from a corner and made the score 2-0 with a fine run and shot. Earlier Taverners had gone close, one effort being headed off the line and Vaughn Gledhill firing against the bar from close in.

A third Bramford goal immediately after half-time boded ill for the Tavs but, despite tailing off as an attacking force, our strong defending managed to keep the final tally to five. Marcus Webb and Geoff Leeks did well while Mark Chapman showed up well at right back.

Team: A Smith, Chapman, Leeks, Webb, Cunningham, Bullamore, Bowman, Strutt, Gledhill, Atabaky, Stevens (Subs: hollinsworth, Holmes, Aldred).

Easter Blank--------24th April 2011

Reserves

Taverners 0 Taydal 3

A much-changed Tavs side took the field against Taydal, keen to reverse the previous week's result against the same opposition

- including James Bullamore, who was making his 400th appearance for the Club.

Tavs chairman Pat Elvin presented Bully with a memento to mark this fine achievement.

Those in front of James in the Hall of Fame are Bevan Burgess, Gary Cunningham, Tim Howard, Daren Stevens, Smokey Hedges, Andy Spivey and, topping them all, Pat Elvin.

The first half was fairly even with the Taverners defence - well-marshalled by Marcus Webb and Geoff Leeks - doing well while, at the other end, Daren Stevens won more than his share in the air while we were convinced that we had taken the lead when a defender's header seemed to have crossed his own line before being cleared; roll-on the introduction of goal-line technology!

Taydal's strong start to the second half led to them opening the scoring and then a mistake led to a second. Taverners never gave up and Trevor Hollinsworth fired over while Mark Aldred saw a header go wide.

A third Taydal goal sealed their win in a tough encounter which was generally played in good spirit.

Team: A Smith, Davis (Sub: Holmes), Leeks, Webb, Chard, Strutt (Sub: Aldred), Bullamore (Sub: Atabaky), Bowman, T Vincent, Stevens, Hollinsworth.

Oh dear!--------17th April 2011

First Team

Taverners 0 Belstead Arms 12 (Twelve)

Everyone concerned will be relieved at a brief report of one of the club's worst-ever defeats.

If Belstead Arms were able to field the side that faced us every week then they would have a great chance of winning the league.

Without hiding behind excuses, we were somewhat weakened and had no answer to some speedy and incisive attacking.

A word for Matt Davis who had no chance with any of the goals and continued to tackle his job in the 90th minute with the same enthusiasm as he had at the first whistle.

We must, as a club, look forward and give long consideration to how the recurring 'numbers problem' can best be tackled in the future.

Team: Davis, Beaney, Bullamore, Leeks, Burgess, Aldred, Brooks, R Horsfall, Wray, Cunningham, Stevens.

Penalty Proves Pricey--------10th April 2011

First Team

Taverners 1 Capel Plough 2

A real six-pointer, this one! The last two weeks have seen the Tavs play some good football without showing enough thrust or guile to pose much threat to the opposition and against Capel Plough we had an outstanding opening 20 minutes but were unable to score while Capel looked dangerous in breakaways and might have gone ahead more than once.

Eventually, a defensive mistake let Capel in and our woes were increased when a penalty enabled them to make the score 2-0.

However, we battled on and eventually pulled a goal back when the so-busy Tom Brooks headed on, Henry Chard produced the pass and Ben Norfolk chipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.

Now we were back in it and a succession of crosses, long throws and corners produced lively goalmouth action without a situation developing where we managed a clear sight of goal.

Overall, the result turned on decisions in the two penalty areas. We felt very aggrieved to see a penalty awarded against us, with the grounded Andy Lambert still adamant afterwards that any contact with the ball was purely accidental, while, at the other end, our loud appeals for hand-ball and a spot-kick were turned down.

In a goalkeeping crisis, we were grateful to Daren Stevens for donning the gloves and he did well.

Team: Stevens, Beaney, Bullamore (Sub: T Vincent), Lambert, Burgess, Southgate, R Horsfall, Brooks, Wray, Norfolk, Chard.

International Friendly--------8th April 2011

Taverners 0, Rufus BK 1 It made a refreshing change to play an evening friendly against Norwegian side Rufus BK and the proceedings had a boost by the appointment of official referee and assistants, courtesy of the ISFL.

The two teams were evenly balanced and, despite some difference in styles, there was hardly a foul or a word of dissent. Once again we were punished for a defensive error and, once behind, rarely threatened to level the scores.

Squad photos can be found here

Squad: A Smith, Beaney, Bullamore, Lambert, Chapman, Aldred, Chard, Brittain, Wray, Gledhill, Atabaky, Davis, Burrows, T Vincent, Bowman, Holmes.

Numbers good, results bad--------3rd April 2011

First Team

Taverners 0 Underwoods 1

Considering that the two team met a week ago - when a player from each side was dismissed - the first team's game against Underwoods was an excellent advert for Sunday football; hard-fought but played in good spirit and well refereed by Gavin Hetherington.

The teams had respect for each other after last Sunday's draw and there were not too many clear-cut chances although Andy Lambert produced one marvellous clearance off the line and Bevan Burgess another while, at the other end, Henry Chard looked dangerous breaking on the right hand side. We had an excellent last twenty minutes of the first half, putting on pressure but unable to break through.

As the second half progressed, it looked clear that one goal would win the match. Andy Lambert again blocked on the line while our closest efforts were a Tom Brooks shot which was tipped over and a shot from Daren Stevens which just cleared the bar.

Eventually, it was Underwoods who went ahead after a good run through by one of their defenders and, although we had plenty of possession, we rarely looked like equalising.

Team: Halls, Beaney (Sub: Brittain), Bullamore, Lambert, Burgess, Chard, Brooks, R Horsfall, Wray, Pilkington (Sub: Norfolk), Stevens.

Reserves

Rushmere Selkirk 3 Taverners Res. 0

Our visit to Dumbarton Road could have turned out differently if we had taken two early chances but, once Rushmere scored on a breakaway and we lost Eamon Mongan to injury, the game was all but over.

Even when the Tavs got forward, the run of the ball never favoured us. Vaughn Gledhill had a header cleared off the line and Geoff Leeks headed against the bar. Philip 'Dippy' Bowman went one-on-one with the keeper but unfortunately forgot to take the ball with him!

It was inevitable that we would concede, in fact it could have been worse than the final 3-0 scoreline if Rushmere had a decent striker to finish off their good approachwork.

On the 'plus-side' it was good to see Vaughn and Marcus Webb back in action after injury.

Referee Mick Stokes had a good match

Bouncing Baby Boy for Beaneys--------28th March 2011

One point weekend--------27th March 2011

First Team

Underwoods 1 Taverners 1

Despite having to make several changes, the Tavs began with great confidence, playing some good football on the big Dellwood Avenue pitch. Our spirits were boosted by an early goal - Duncan Southgate's superb free-kick being mishandled by the Underwood keeper and Gary Pilkington pouncing to drive the ball home.

Underwoods came forward and we had one let-off when our offside trap failed while Clive Halls tipped another effort over the bar. We were battling for everything all over the pitch with Andy Lambert and James Bullamore marshalling the defence well.

We were still looking dangerous in attack and we were disappointed that an apparent foul on Daren Stevens as he bore down on goal wasn't punished while one tremendous goalmouth scramble saw three Taverners' efforts blocked.

The second half saw Underwoods enjoy an increasing amount of possession but our tremendous workrate continued - with Tom Brooks celebrating his 200th appearance for the club with a whole-hearted and determined display.

Underwoods took advantage of a mistake to equalise and the pattern of the game changed with a double-dismissal, Matty Wray being the Tavs player involved.

We kept our heads and team-shape, however, to hold out for a fully deserved point.

Team: Halls, Beaney, Lambert, Bullamore, Burgess, Southgate, Horsfall, Brooks, Wray, Pilkington, Stevens.

Reserves

Taverners Res. 0 Holbrook Swan Res.1

Holbrook began by enjoying the best of the play but very poor finishing meant that they never pushed home their advantage.

We suffered two blows - Paul Ryan being injured after 20 minutes play and the Sam Burrows being sent off after a scuffle. The Holbrook player involved escaped with a booking which cannot be explained.

Holbrook finally took the lead and, apart from one cross met by Geoff Leeks with a header which crashed against the bar, they were never really troubled. Indeed, if Holbrook had been a better side they could have run out bigger winners.

Two on the bounce for reserves--------20th March 2011

Reserves

Taverners Res. 3 Felixstowe Harpers Res.2

Sunday football gets very little praise and acknowledgement so it's good to report the reserve team's home game against Felixstowe Harpers reserves which was a hard-fought but entirely sporting contest, well refereed by Tony Joyce and with the result in doubt up to the final whistle; enjoyable to play in and watch.

The first half saw the Tavs pressing forward and playing some good football with Matty Wray - energy itself - involved in attacks and in tackling back when required. We took the lead when Daren Stevens won the ball at the far post and headed down for Eamon Mongan to fire home.

Trevor Hollinsworth was thwarted by the keeper as he followed up a mishandled shot and then Eamon saw a similar effort blocked close to the Harpers goal. As so often happens, a breakaway spelt danger and Harpers went through to equalise before half-time.

The early part of the second period saw Taverners well on top and we eventually regained the advantage when Trevor was played in and he waited till the ball was 'in his stride' before shooting home. Trevor had earlier seen a good effort go narrowly wide.

A corner from Trevor led to our third goal. In fact, an eagle-eyed Frank confirmed that the corner had crossed the line (unseen by the referee) for a goal before the goalkeeper clawed it away but Harpers' relief was short-lived as Bevan Burgess pounced to drive the ball home for a 3-1 lead.

Several half-chances on the edge of the box went narrowly wide or over as Taverners threatened to run away with the game. However, indecision gave Harpers the chance to score a second and we were on tenterhooks during the dying minutes as some resolute defending was needed for the Tavs to retain the lead.

Team: Smith A, Davis (Baxter), Lambert, Leeks, Cunningham, Burrows, Wray, Mongan, Burgess, Stevens, Hollinsworth.

No points this week--------13th March 2011

First Team

Taverners 0 Ramsomes Sports 2

Meeting Ransomes Sports for the third time this season - and with a team showing six changes - the Tavs began solidly and, although Ransomes had slightly more of the play, we tackled hard and played some good football on the counter-attack. It was good to see Ben Norfolk back in a Taverners shirt after his spell 'down under.'

Tom Brooks was tenacious while Eamon Mongan did well on the left side. Unfortunately, our problem remains in the final third although Ransomes were also unable to score before the break, mainly because of good defensive work and several good saves by Clive Halls.

The confidence we had built up in the first half was dented by a well-taken Ransomes goal early in the second half but we regained our rhythm and pressed forward. On another day, Tom Brooks could have had a hat-trick but he had no luck with his finishing - one header well saved and other efforts going close. A loud appeal for handball in the box went unheaded while Ryan Horsfall - keen to get forward at every opportunity -was tripped in a dangerous position.

As a scramble deep in the Ransomes six yard box was cleared it was looking evident that we weren't destined to score and we were caught on the break in the dying moments as Ransomes went through for a second goal.

Team: Halls, Beaney, Bullamore, Lambert, Wray, Brittain, Brooks, R Horsfall, Mongan, Norfolk (Sub: Bowman), Pilkington (Sub: Hollinsworth).

First Team Fall whilst Reserves take Revenge!--------20th February 2011

First Team

Shotley Rose 5 Taverners 3

The first team reflected a number of changes but displayed tremendous spirit in their difficult visit to Shotley Rose, playing some good football throughout and producing a quality second half showing when it would have been very easy to have capitulated.

Shotley used their pace and directness well early on and their movement gave the Tavs some tricky moments. Eventually Shotley opened the scoring with an effort from some distance but we had looked purposeful going forward and some neat work by Daren Stevens gave Henry Chard the chance to blast in the equaliser.

We felt somewhat hard done by when what semed a clear handball halted a Taverners attack and Shotley broke very quickly to regain their advantage. They then extended their lead to 4-1 via two own goals from close range.

Many sides would have laid down in the second half but Taverners gave a performance of which they could be proud. Intelligent and brave defending - one tremendous block by Andy Lambert comes to mind - combined with fighting spirit throughout the team kept the Rose at distance and then we pulled a goal back with the best goal seen for many a day; the ball blasted into the top corner by Daren Stevens.

Shotley made the score 5-2 but the Tavs had the final word when Daren slid in to score after Henry Chard had nudged the ball past the keeper.

Team: Davis, Beaney, Bullamore, Lambert, Spivey, Chard, Brooks, Ryan, Burgess, Pilkington (Chapman), Stevens.

Reserves

Taverners Reserves 3 Kesgrave Atheltic 2

Following some very disappointing results due mainly to injuries and unavailability including one against Kesgrave it was good news that Taverners could field a side to compete. The eventual result served to highlight the fact that the previous meeting between these teams gave a false impression of the Taverners ability.

The pitch was heavy but very playable. Taverners set out from the start to attack and chances came thick and fast. Kesgrave had little answer to these attacks which eventually paid off when Tom Vincent latched onto a loose ball in the six yard box to score. Taverners continued to press and were unlucky not to go further ahead before half time.

Taverners came out with confidence in the second half. It was with some surprise that Kesgrave equalized. Taverners took the lead again when Gary Cunningham headed home from close range.

With little drive from Kesgrave the game looked safe but again with just five minutes to go Kesgrave equalised.

Taverners attacked hard with time running short. Big performances from Lee Riley and Gary Cox and it was again after some great work from Lee and Gary Cunningham which found Gary Cox on the edge of the 18yard box who turned and shot to the bottom left of the goal.

A well deserved result.

Team: A Smith, Baxter (Sub: Holmes), Leeks, Southgate, Cunningham, Atabaky, Riley, Fisk, Hollinsworth, T Vincent (Sub: Aldred), Cox

A Sunday to forget?--------13th February 2011

First Team

Unicorn 3 Taverners 0

A difficult season for the Tavs continues!

To begin with the positives, the club's thanks are due to Tem Atabaky for joining the squad at the last possible moment and to Frank for a cross-town dash to bring him to Stowmarket's Chilton Fields. The Tavs were well supported and 'thank you' to Dave Vincent and Pat Elvin for sharing the club assistant's duties.

The team showed several changes from the side which faced Shotley Rose last week with Trevor Hollinsworth drafted in on the morning after Tom Brooks failed a fitness test.

We began fairly well and used the ball intelligently, Trevor going close with a header. However, a needlessly conceded free-kick was poorly defended and Unicorn took the lead - which they doubled shortly after the break, again as a result of poor marking in the face of a free-kick.

A tremendous run by Ryan Horsfall - perhaps our highlight - resulted in a defender bringing him down but James Bullamore saw his spot-kick saved. Poor distribution from defence led to Unicorn scoring a third.

Several 'cards' were shown before a last minute flare-up resulted in ex-Taverner Paul steward being dismissed and Ryan following him for a 'second yellow.'

Matt Davis continued the fine goalkeeping form he has been showing in the reserves.

Team: Davis, Beaney, Bullamore, Lambert, Wray, Burrows, Mongan, R Horsfall, Burgess, Hollinsworth (Sub: Atabaky), Stevens.

blankety blank!--------6th February 2011

First Team

Taverners 1 Shotley Rose 2

It almost goes without saying that team-changes were necessary – some very last-minute – and we were very grateful to Paul Ryan for playing his first game for the senior side for a long time and for Matty Wray’s willingness to join us as eleventh-hour substitute despite being injured; this positive attitude avoided the club suffering the embarrassment of having to play more than half the game with ten men after Gary Cunningham was injured.

With the wind behind us, we held our own in the first half, defending well against a team who enjoyed much possession and battling for every ball. We were given confidence by Clive Halls’ good handling and dominating presence in goal.

Facing the fierce elements after the break, the Tavs got off to the best possible start when Daren Stevens was coolness itself as he fired us into the lead.

The conditions meant that, once more, we were forced to defend but we did so with style combined with bravery – boosted by another point-blank save by Clive from a header. As the half progressed, we began to believe that we might hold on but we were under more and more pressure and eventually a Shotley long-throw was nodded on and headed home from close range.

Another long throw-in led to Shotley scoring the winner soon afterwards and, although we had attacking moments late-on, we could not come back.

The result sees the Tavs slip to bottom of the table – assisted by AFC Woodbridge’s withdrawal on top of Ascio’s demise a few weeks ago. Only one team will now be relegated.

It is sad to see the Premier Division once again reduced to ten teams – as a result, no doubt, of complete player apathy and unwillingness to show commitment to the two clubs concerned.

Team: Halls, Beaney, Bullamore, Lambert, Cunningham (Sub: Wray), Ryan, Pilkington, Mongan, Brooks, Stevens, Burrows.

Reserves

Kesgrave Athletic 8 Taverners Reserves 0

It happens once a season and to say it's frustrating is an understatement. Bob and I organize enough people to field two sides and by the morning of the game after some pretty poor excuses we are once again with two sides and only 22 players. The 1st team resembles the side we started with in the reserves at the start of the season.

So with little opportunity to attack we started with a 451 formation but even this did not allow for people playing out of position and not performing their defensive duties well enough. Matt Davies was left with two attackers and had no chance in stopping the shot that put them 1-0 up. Two more goals followed very quickly one from a corner and one straight from a free kick. But then Tav's got a hold on the game and stopped the onslaught. Special mention goes to Andy Spivey, Paul Strutt and Bevan Burgess who all had good games.

The second half saw Kesgrave take a firm hold as Tav's pushed forward in search of a goal. They scored five times to make it 8.

We play them again in two weeks let's hope we don't have any extreme blister injuries or people who are too tired even when they know it's a desperate situation. Kesgrave are our worst opponents this year without a doubt.

Deja Vu--------30th January 2011

First Team

Ransomes Sports 3, Taverners 1

A Tavs side containing several changes took a while to settle but then began to play some good football - only to be caught square at the back and concede the first goal. Clive Halls made a point-blank save to prevent a second but not long afterwards we failed to clear and ransomes went 2-0 ahead.

We continued to press forward with Eamon Mongan showing good touches and Tom Brooks lively and eventually scored when a cross from Gary Pilkington was turned into his own net by a defender.

Confidence was high that we could go for the equaliser but a defensive slip gave Ransomes a third goal.

While we continued to have a good share of possession for the rest of the game - Duncan Southgate forcing one fine save from the Ransomes keeper - we struggled to cope with our opponents' forwards and Clive Halls had to work hard in goal.

A very disappointing result in what was clearly a 'six pointer'.

Team: Halls, Beaney, Bullamore, Southgate, Cunningham (Sub: Hollinsworth), Brittain, Brooks, Mongan, Wray, Stevens (Sub: Atabaky), Pilkington.

Another pointless trip to Gainsborough!--------24th January 2011

First Team

Ipswich Thistle 3 Taverners 1

With call-offs and unavailability reducing the squad, the first team anticipated a tough morning against second-placed Ipswich Thistle and the early stages looked decidedly worrying as the Thistle took a two goal lead and looked capable of scoring more.

Fortunately, we fought back and, when Liam Claydon's corner was mis-punched by the keeper, Daren Stevens pounced to force the ball home.

Our defending improved, with everyone battling hard and keeping our shape, and - although Thistle continued to threaten - we looked to have equalised through a Daren Stevens header until the keeper turned the ball over.

The Tavs' spirited approach was maintained after the break, combined with some fine last-ditch defending and good saves by Clive Halls and, when we got forward we threatened more than once. Tom Brooks saw a goal-bound shot brilliantly saved while Liam Claydon produced some lively runs which deserved better reward.

There's no doubt that Ipswich Thistle are a quality side and deserved their win but the Tavs can feel satisfied with the attitude and composure shown throughout which kept a clean sheet in the second half, while we created chances to score ourselves.

Taverners Reserves 1 Felixstowe Ath. 03 3

After the recent wet weather it was great to find the pitch at Greshams in fine shape but a series of call-offs - mainly through sickness - meant a re-shuffle and we were grateful to Duncan Southgate for joining the line-up at the last minute.

With so many changes - and several players in unaccustomed positions through force of circumstances - it took the Tavs a long time to settle down and a well taken goal gave Felixstowe an early boost. Fortunately, Matt Davis continued his recent fine form in goal and his good handling and quick anticipation saved us several times.

There were loud appeals for offside as Felixstowe grabbed a second but we then had the benefit of the doubt just after the break when Adam Beaney's long range effort found the net with the keeper stranded. Whether 'Dippy' Bowman's contribution amounted to an 'active role' is a matter for debate but there was no flag and the goal stood.

With the breeze behind us, the Tavs forced the pace with Paul Ryan outstanding in midfield. The nearest we came to scoring, however, was Clive Halls' shot - blocked on the line - following a 'back-pass infringement' by the Felixstowe keeper. We should have done better from other promising dead-ball situations.

If we needed a lesson in finishing, it was provided by a Felixstowe forward who struck a fine shot past Matt Davis to give them a 3-1 lead midway through the second half.

Neither side could get to grips with the increasingly windy conditions but this was a sporting match, well refereed by Mike Moir.

Not such a Happy New Year--------9th January 2011

First Team

Ferryboat 3 Taverners 1

The first team returned to action after a long break with an ISFL Premier Division visit to Ferryboat and certainly showed up well in the first half, grabbing the lead when James Bullamore's long ball gave Sam Burrows the opportunity to chip the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.

Sam hit the top of the bar a few minutes later and a second goal at that stage would have been a good cushion for the second half. He also produced several dangerous throw-ins which unfortunately didn't lead to anything.

As it was, despite our best intentions, Ferryboat came back strongly after the break and equalised with a well-struck shot which was wind-assisted as it flew home. A great goal but we felt a little agrieved that a push on Andy Lambert was not penalised as Ferryboat gained possession. A second Ferryboat goal put them in the driving seat but the Tavs continued to work hard, without showing too much guile or threat up front.

Pressing forward, we were caught on the break as a Ferryboat counter-attack brought them a third goal in what had been a sporting match.

James Dines did well in goal throughout while it was pleasing to see Adam Beaney and Tom Brooks back in action after long injury lay-offs; Brooks still had the energy to switch to an attacking role in the closing stages after a fine stint at centre half.

The reserve team's game at Greshams fell foul of the weather.

Mud bath at Fortress Greshams!--------12th December 2010

Reserves

Taverners Reserves 2 Bramford Cock 3

Despite the difficult, sticky conditions at greshams, the Tavs and Bramford Cock produced a fine match with both teams having periods of dominance and plenty of goalmouth incident throughout.

Taverners looked to have more appetite for the battle early on and we were unlucky when a shot from Sam Burrows crashed against the face of the bar with the goalkeeper completely beaten. We took the lead midway through the first half when Andy Lambert sent Matt Pearson away and he cut in to coolly net past the Bramford keeper.

Bramford came back strongly but they found Geoff Leeks and Andy Spivey a determined and resolute combination at the heart of the Tavs defence while, behind them, Matt Davis did well in goal; one tip-over save and much clean handling and good anticipation.

Eventually Bramford equalised with a picture header and they took the lead on the stroke of half-time with a shot into the corner of the net.

We were pegged back at the start of the second period and, when Bramford made the score 3-1, things looked black.

However, we continued to defend sensibly and had the encouragement of some nippy attacks, eventually reducing the arrears when Marcus Webb - who led the line so well - broke through and laid the ball off for Jamie Brittain to score.

Play went from end to end but - although Paul Strutt managed to get round the Bramford keeper only to run out of space - most of our efforts came from long range and the score remained at 3-2 at the final whistle.

An enjoyable game to watch and to play in.

Team: Davis, Beaney, Leeks, Spivey, Burgess, Fisk (Sub: Southgate), Lambert, Strutt, Pearson (Sub: Brittain), Burrows (Sub: Hollinsworth), Webb.

Ascio No Show--------20th November 2010

First Team

The 1st team saw their visit to Ascio postponed on Saturday evening as our opponents were unfortunately unable to raise a team.

This meant that we were prevented from saying a personal 'bob voyage' to Ben Norfolk on his forthcoming departure to Australia but we send him every good wish and hope to see him back in a Taverners shirt before too long.

On the credit side, Tom Brooks and Adam Beaney are both due to return after injury very shortly and we shall welcome their addition to our playing strengths.

First Win for First Team!--------14th November 2010

First Team

Woodbridge 4 Taverners 5

With AFC Woodbridge fielding a depleted side, the Tavs got right on top and took the lead when Duncan Southgate's corner was flicked on by Vaughn Gledhill and Henry Chard scored from close range.

Further chances were created and missed while the Woodbridge goalkeeper made several good saves. As Woodbridge's playing numbers increased, Taverners found it difficult to adjust their game and - as a result of a lack of concentration - we conceded the equaliser. Loud appeals for offside - supported by Dave Vincent's flag - went strangely unheeded as Woodbridge scored a second.

We shrugged this setback off by drawing level when Duncan Southgate's dangerous free-kick was headed home by Ben Norfolk. A handling offence then gave James Bullamore the chance to net a penalty to put the Tavs ahead again and then Vaughn Gledhill scored for a 4-2 interval lead.

The next goal was clearly going to be very important and it went our way when a free-kick was netted by Duncan - who did well in place of the unwell Andy Lambert - but Woodbridge refused to give up and two quick goals ensured an anxious finish before we travelled home with a 5-4 win and - for the first time this season - three points.

Team: Dines, Chard, Bullamore (Sub: Cunningham), Southgate, Pilkington, Farris, Gledhill, Brittain, Wray, Norfolk, Parry.

Reserves

Taverners Reserves 2 Walton Rovers 4

On a very heavy pitch the game started with Walton on the attack and they had the best of the opening 20 minutes. They took the lead after a fortunate deflection as the ball was being cleared.

Taverners started to get into the game and drew level after a Sam Burrows corner was laid back for Geoff Leeks to strike his shot cut across the six yard to find Mark Aldred who back heeled into the net.

Taverners took control and went ahead when the keeper caught a cross and then dropped the ball into his own net. With full control of the game it was disappointing to concede again just before half time leaving the score 2-2 at the break.

The second half saw Taverners just slowly fade and Walton took full advantage scoring twice more. The only highlights for Tavs in the second half were a close range shot from Sam Burrows which hit the bar and a trade mark corner from Trevor Hollinsworth which was headed off the line.

Team: Smith. A, Davis (Sherman), Leeks, Spivey, Burgess, Burrows, Ryan (Chapman), Monghan, Aldred, Atabaky, Hollingsworth.

Stevens Hat Trick - Again!-------- 7th November 2010

Reserves

Taverners Reserves 4 Rushmere Selkirk 2

Although well on top at home to Rushmere Selkirk, the Tavs took some while to take the lead, Andy Lambert's long free-kick being directed into the top corner by Daren Stevens' header.

We were playing some neat football at times and a fine move led to Trevor Hollinsworth crossing and Daren Stevens showing great agility in reaching the ball and heading it over the Selkirk keeper. Selkirk were showing determination in attack but they went further behind when Eamon Mongan swept the ball home.

The second half began with a fourth Taverners goal. Daren Stevens hit the post and, as Sam Burrows, collected the rebound he was heavily brought down. There were no protests from the Selkirk defenders as Daren stepped up to hit his spot-kick low past the keeper and complete his hat-trick; a fine effort, well done Daren.

It now looked a case of how many would we score but, although Trevor Hollinsworth was to hit a post later on, we took our foot 'off the pedal' and the Selkirk pulled two goals back to cause us one or two anxious checks on how much time was left!

A mention for 'Dippy' Bowman, who has enjoyed a good start to the season and has played well at fullback for the first team a fortnight ago and for the reserves on Sunday.

Team: Smith. A, Bowman (Davis), Leeks, Lambert, Burgess, Burrows, Ryan, Monghan, Strutt (Aldred) , Stevens (Atabaky), Hollingsworth.

Double Draw!--------31st October 2010

First Team

Taverners 0 Unicorn 0

A much-changed Taverners side went into a tricky match against Unicorn with great spirit and determination and fully deserved the point and the clean-sheet.

The first half saw the Tavs shade things in a tremendous battle fought out for the main part in midfield. After the break, Unicorn had more of the play but we defended well while, further forward, no one flinched a tackle and we deserved a little luck when two Unicorn efforts came back off the woodwork.

Vaughn Gledhill deserves our thanks for a last-minute switch to goalkeeper while Ben Norfolk did well in midfield and Matty Wray made a superb first-team debut at left back.

All in all, a solid and spirited team performance.

Team: Gledhill, Bowman, Bullamore, Lambert, Wray, Norfolk, Farris, Claydon, Brittain, Parry, Stevens.

Reserves

Orwell 3 Taverners Reserves 3

Taverners reserves visited high-flying Orwell at Eastward Ho and had to show their fighting qualities as they trailed 2-0 in the second half. Two quick goals - a header from Paul Strutt and a penalty scored by Trevor Hollinsworth after a foul on the tireless Tem Atabaky - saw the Tavs level the scores.

All seemed lost when Orwell regained the lead in the last minute but they had struggled to cope with Hollinsworth's corners all morning and another of these led to an own goal and a 3-3 final scoreline.

As with the first team, a battling display by all concerned which merited the point.

Team: Smith. A, Aldred, Leeks, Webb, Davis, Burrows, Strutt, Monghan, Burgess , Atabaky, Hollingsworth.

Goals a plenty!--------24th October 2010

First Team

Taverners 0 Ascio 6

From the first whistle it looked as if we were going to struggle to keep our heads above water against an Ascio side who were so quick in attack and had too many players who were capable of controlling the game and directing events.

Offside thwarted Ascio on several occasions but, once they got their noses in front, and certainly when they scored a second goal just before half-time there only looked to be one winner.

By the end, we were grateful to some last-ditch defending and fine goalkeeping by the debutant James Dines for keeping the score down to six.

Dinesy's good work in goal was a plus and other bright-spots were Luke Farris' tireless contribution in midfield and Daren Stevens battling away up front.

Team : Danes, Southgate (Wilcox), Bullamore, Lambert, Burgess, Farris, Strutt, Gledhill, Pilkington, Norfolk, Stevens.

Reserves - Junior Cup

Worlingworth 7 Taverners Reserves 6 (AET)

As the scoreline suggests it was not a great day for the defense of either side. But it was a good old fashioned Sunday morning game of football.

Worlingworth took the lead very early when a shot which was going ten feet wide hit one of their players on the back and deflected into the goal. Taverners replied almost immediately after some one touch football involving Sam Burrows, Matty Wray and Tem Atabaki who laid the ball back for Paul Ryan to score from the edge of the 18 yrd box.

Taverners took the lead through Tom Vincent when he chipped the advancing keeper from out side the box. Worlingworth equalized only for Tavs to take the lead again when Trevor Hollinsworth scored from close range. Worlingworth made in 3-3 but minutes later Tav's were awarded a penalty which was scored by Trevor Hollinsworth.

The problem was not going forward, the local crowd who turned out in numbers were spoilt for attacking football. Defensive mistakes on the side of Taverners was the cause and when Worlingworth equalized again you began to wonder if it would ever stop. It did not. Taverners again took the lead when Tem Atabaki headed in from an impossible angle from a corner. 5-4 at half time.

The second half was better from a defense point of view but after just ten minutes Worlingworth equalized yet again. It should be noted that Matt Davies in Tavs goal was exceptional and was not at fault for a single goal. The remainder of the half was end to end with many many chances going both ways. It was Taverners who again took the lead through Philip (Dippy)Bowman who placed the ball just inside the post from 15 yrds.

With just minutes to go it looked like Tavs would hold on but in the dying seconds a corner was not dealt with and Worlingworth scored.

Extra time was a very tired affair on both sides. The heavy pitch had taken it's toll on the legs. For just the second time in the game Worlingworth took the lead and as much as Taverners tried the game finally got away from them.

Team: Davis, Aldred, Leeks, Webb, Wray, Burrows, Ryan, Bowman, Vincent, Atabaky, Hollingsworth.

Reserves Run Riot--------17th October 2010

Reserves

Felixstowe Harpers Reserves 2 Taverners Reserves 8

The reserves were forced to defend early on in their visit to Felixstowe Harpers reserves and Alex Smith made a tremendous save in a one-to-one situation – he continued to deal confidently with everything thrown at him throughout the game behind a resolute defence.

The Tavs grabbed the lead when Sam Burrows’ long throw caused havoc and, when the ball broke to Philip ‘Dippy’ Bowman, he drove it home from the edge of the box. As we used the spacious pitch well, Dippy was highly unlucky to have a second effort ruled out for offside but we made it 2-0 when Trevor Hollinsworth’s corner was headed in by Daren Stevens. Another fine move ended with Sam crossing for Trevor to head number three.

The Tavs made the best possible start to the second half when – straight from the kick-off – Paul Strutt crossed for Daren to control and score. Although Harpers – who enjoyed a good amount of possession – pulled a goal back, Strutty made the score 5-1 with a well-judged chip over the keeper from some distance.

Daren then headed in a Strutty corner to make it 6-1 and a second Harpers goal was shrugged off as Bevan Burgess crossed for Tim Atabaky to fire home at the far post. A fine team performance – which secured the side’s biggest win for 10 years - was rounded off by a headed Paul Strutt goal from Sam Burrows’ cross.

Our thanks are due to Matt Davis who – having run the line for us in the first half – took the whistle for the second to replace the Harpers player who had refereed the opening 45 minutes.

Team : A. Smith, M. Aldred (M. Chapman), A. Lambert, G. Leeks, R. Fisk, S. Burrows, P. Strutt, P. Bowman, B. Burgess, D. Stevens (T. Atabaky), T. Hollinsworth.

Trev scores his 200th goal--------3rd October 2010

Trevor Hollinsworth scored his 200th goal for the club this morning and he is pictured on the attached photo receiving a trophy to mark this fine achievement.

Trev joins 222-goalman Gary Cunningham in netting a double-century for the club.

Congratulations, Trev !

First Team

Taverners 2 Holbrook Swan 3

The first team – showing a number of changes – began their home match against the Martyn O’Leary-led Holbrook Swan in determined and positive mood and our first half performance was described by club chairman pat Elvin as “the best for some time.” The hard-working Liam Claydon saw an acrobatic effort touched onto the Swan bar and the rebound was scrambled clear but this was only a reprieve as a short corner move led to Duncan Southgate crossing and Ben Norfolk firing home.

We doubled our lead when a neat pass from Liam Claydon found Daren Stevens in space and he drove the ball past the keeper.

The Swan reduced the arrears just before the break as our marking was found wanting. Holbrook enjoyed a lot of possession in the second period despite good work by Luke Farris on his first team full debut but it took a freakish goal to register their equaliser. With the Tavs clearly tiring, the Swan took the points with a late goal despite two superb blocks by Marty Smith, who was standing in for the injured Clive Halls in goal.

This was a hard-fought encounter, well handled by referee Louis Dawson.

Team : M Smith, Southgate, Bullamore, Lambert, Pilkington, Gledhill, Strutt, Claydon, Farris, Norfolk (Sub: Brittain), Stevens.

Reserves

Ipswich Hospitals 6 Taverners reserves 2

The reserves were beaten 6-2 by Ipswich Hospitals at Gainsborough Sports Centre, giving a good account of themselves in the second half after trailing by four goals at half-time.

Goalkeeper Alex Smith and debutant Matty Wray did well while Andy Spivey and Paul Ryan used their experience to good effect in the middle of midfield.

Trevor Hollinsworth's 'milestone-goal' came direct from a corner and Andy Spivey netted from the penalty spot for our second.

Team: A. Smith, M. Aldred, M. Davis, G. Leeks, A. Nunn, M. Chapman, A. Spivey, P. Ryan, M. Wray, T. Hollinsworth, T. Atabaky.

First Team

Senior Cup

Margaret Catchpole 2 Taverners 0

However disappointing the eventual outcome of this Cup tie proved, we began in determined mood and played some good football for the first half hour. Several crosses from Gary Pilkington spelt danger and it only seemed a matter of time before we scored. Unfortunately, we lost possession, failed to recover and a speedy attack ended with an angled shot hitting our net.

Undeterred, we attacked again although one sensed it would not be our day when Marcus Webb was clearly fouled as he was poised to head home after a goalmouth scramble and no penalty was forthcoming.

Our good intentions for the second half were dealt a severe blow when a short back-pass resulted in the Catchpole doubling their lead immediately after the break.

A head injury to Gary Cunningham saw him replaced by Tem Atabaky and he went the closest to scoring with a snap shot which hit the underside of the bar.

Tempers all-round worsened as the game approached its end and, after a flurry of yellow cards, we unfortunately saw two players dismissed (for second cautions) to round off a bad morning.

Team: Halls, Southgate, Bullamore, Webb, Cunningham (Sub: Atabaky), Lambert, R Horsfall, Mongan, Pilkington, Norfolk, Gledhill.

Reserves

Taverners Reserves 2 Kesgrave Social Club 2 (4-3 AET)

It was perfect football weather for this Junior cup match. Taverners started cautiously and Kesgrave took some advantage but with no end product. It was Taverners who had the first chance when Daren Stevens was brought down in the box for a penalty. Unfortunately a miss hit from Trevor Hollinsworth saw the keeper save with his legs.

This however spurred Taverners on and before half time they should have put the game beyond reply. Trevor Holllinsworth had a number of chances but saw each one go wide of the goal.

After 10 minutes of the restart Kesgrave took the lead. Taverners replied immediately through Daren Stevens who was on hand to head home a Sam Burrows cross. 10 minutes later Taverners took the lead from a corner, Daren Stevens was again on hand to head home the cross.

With little in the way of any threat from Kesgrave the lead looked very safe but with just 30 seconds to go Kesgrave bundled in a late equaliser.

With all their changes made Taverners were not prepared for extra time but within minutes of the first half they took the lead again when from a cleared corner Andy Spivey volleyed across goal which was met by the head of Trevor Hollinsworth to score.

Taverners took complete control and went further ahead in the second half of extra time when Jamie Brittain's cross was flicked on and Trevor Hollinsworth was there to half volley home. With a 4-2 lead the game finally looked safe but again Kesgrave fought hard in the dying minutes and got their third goal.

Team: A. Smith, M. Aldred, A. Spivey, G. Leeks, B. Burgess, S. Burrows, P. Bowman, L Farris, J. Brittain, T. Hollinsworth, D Stevens.

First points for reserves--------21st September 2010

First Team

Taverners 2, Ferryboat 2

The first team entertained Ferryboat - with whom we had fought out two draws last season - and started well, absorbing pressure, but catching our opponents out with quick counter-attacks.

Ben Norfolk made a good break on the right and, when his cross caused confusion in the Ferryboat defence, Eamon Mongan pounced to fire into the corner. A second Taverners goal followed a neat build-up - Duncan Southgate being prominent - and this time Norfolk sped through to beat the advancing goalkeeper.

The Tavs were having to defend - with James Bullamore and Andrew 'Panda' Jacobs solid in the middle of the back four - but a rather controversial goal brought Ferryboat back into the match immediately after the break.

A second Ferryboat goal levelled the scores but Taverners continued to fight for everything and - with Vaughn Gledhill working hard throughout up front to take pressure off his defenders - we held out for a 2-2 draw.

Team: C Halls, H Chard, J Bullamore, A.Jacobs, M.Aldred, D Southgate, A.Lambert, E. Mongan, G Cunningham, V Gledhill, B Norfolk

Reserves

Holbrook Swan Reserves 1, Taverners Reserves 2

Due to other commitments and injury Taverners travelled to Holbrook with just 11 players. But this just seemed to bring on the Dunkirk spirit into the team.

The game started with Holbrook having the lion share of the play and Taverners found themselves defending. But with good leadership for Captain Pilkington they began to find their feet after 15 minutes. Although Holbrook did continue to attack their efforts on goal were from distance and not very effective. Taverners battled on and against the run of play scored when a long clearance from Alex Smith in goal was chased down by Tem Atabaki. He stole the ball from one of their defenders and set off from the half way line goalward. He beat three defenders leaving him a one on one with the advancing keeper who he easily beat with a low shot to the bottom left.

Taverners held their lead until 15 minutes into the second half when goalkeeper Alex Smith called for the ball only to see it bounce through his legs leaving the forward an open goal. It has to be said that this was a rare mistake on the day as Alex played well.

Taverners began to press forward and had opertunities to regain the lead as did Holbrook. Again as in past weeks the decision making in front of goal was poor and Taverners failed to put a single shot on target in this half. The only opening for success was from set pieces. Corners caused major problems for Holbrook. It was with just 10 minutes to go a free kick which produced the winning goal. The ball swerved in from 35 yards was met well by Philip Dippy Bowman to head home.

With just minutes to go an equalizer was avoided when Holbrook went clean through but with some determination Jamie Brittain caught and tackled the forward on the 18 yrd box to insure the victory.

On reflection it was a stolen win but good to see the luck going Taverners way for once. Big performances from Bevan Burgess, Andy Spivey, Geoff Leeks, Dippy Bowman, Jamie Bittain and Gary Pilkington.

Team: A. Smith, R. Fisk, A. Spivey, G. Leeks, B. Burgess, S. Burrows, P. Bowman, G. Pilkington, J. Brittain, T. Hollinsworth, T. Atabaky.

Next Week

On Sunday, the first team visit Margaret Catchpole (at St Clements) in the Senior Cup while the reserves entertain Kesgrave Social Club in the Junior Cup. Both matches kick-off at 10.15 am.

Let's concentrate on the League!--------14th September 2010

First Team

Sunday Cup round 1 : Taverners 2, Ransomes Sports 4

The confident and lively start made by the Tavs - boosted when we twice took the lead - ended in disappointment as Ransomes Sports twice came back from behind and then scored two quick goals in the second half to progress to the next round.

We began strongly and took the lead when Duncan Southgate's inswinging corner was headed home by Vaughn Gledhill. A one-on-one chance for Vaughn was saved shortly afterwards and we were punished when Ransomes netted an equaliser.

New signing Ben Norfolk was showing up well and he fired in our second to restore the lead. Unfortunately, a lack of awareness and concentration cost us dear as Ransomes levelled the scores to 2-2 at half-time. We were forced back at the start of the second half and Clive Halls again showed fine form in goal while, on another occasion, Andy Lambert made a double block near his own goal-line to save what looked like a certain goal.

Poor defending led to ransomes taking the lead at 3-2 and they added a fourth shortly afterwards. Although Henry Chard headed over for the Tavs and Clive had to be alert at the other end, there were few chances.

The match was played in excellent spirit and well refereed by Graham Wilks. It was good to see Andy Reilly - an ex-Tav from a few years back - and his wife Lyn, both part of the Ransomes set-up while their son was a thorn in our side all morning!

Team: C Halls, H Chard, J Bullamore, A Lambert, A Nunn (Sub: M Pearson), C Parry (Sub: L Farris), D Southgate, T Brooks, G Cunningham, V Gledhill, B Norfolk

Reserves

Sunday Shield: Capel Plough Reserves 4, Taverners Reserves 3

The reserves visited Capel Plough reserves in the Sunday Shield and felt that better work in the final third would have seen them in the driving seat rather than two goals behind. Gary Pilkington reduced the arrears but Capel scored again to lead 3-1 at the break.

Player manager Trevor Hollinsworth found the net direct from a corner to bring Taverners back in contention but a disputed fourth goal virtually ended their hopes. A headed goal from Bevan Burgess made the score 3-4 but - although the Tavs continued to press to the final whistle - Capel held on. We wish them well.

Team: A. Smith, M. Aldred, M Davis (P. Bowman), M. Webb, B. Burgess, R. Fisk, E. Mongan, G. Pilkington, P. Strutt , T. Hollinsworth, T. Atabaky (J. Brittain).

Season opens with single point--------9th September 2010

First Team

Capel plough 2, Taverners 2

After a mixed-bag of pre-season friendly results, we began the club's 44th Sunday league campaign with a visit to Capel Plough.

The need to make team-changes meant that we took a long time to settle and, by that time, Capel were 2-0 ahead and might have extended their lead without the clean handling and anticipation of Clive Halls in the Taverners goal.

We began to come into the match and had a boost to our confidence with a superbly worked goal just before the break. A fine passing move ended with Lee Riley crossing well and Andy Lambert rising at the far post to head home.

We were forced to defend early in the second period but then gained a series of corners and, from the third of these - clipped to the near post by Duncan Southgate - Henry Chard headed forcefully home for the equaliser. (Apologies, Duncan for omiting your 'assist' in the Geen'un notes!)

Having fought back so well, we were determined to hold the point and everyone worked hard all over the pitch to keep Capel at distance. Our defending was intelligent and resolute - witness one great tackle by Henry late on - while Clive continued to dominate his box.

A point well won.

Team: C Halls, H Chard, J Bullamore, G Leeks, A Nunn (Sub: J Wilcox), A Lambert, D Southgate, L Riley, G Cunningham, V Gledhill, P Strutt.

Reserves

Felixstowe Athletic 03 2, Taverners Reserves 1

The Tavs reserves visited Felixstowe Athletic 03 at Eastward Ho and, after a steady start, fell behind to a speculative shot out of nothing which curled into the far corner.

We fought back with Sam Burrows and Tem Atabaky showing up well. A long-throw from Burrows led to the equaliser, Daren Stevens nodding the ball on and Trevor Hollinsworth volleying home from the corner of the six-yard box.

Taverners were well in contention in the second half until fitness became a factor later on and a Felixstowe player was disappointingly allowed a free run to re-establish his team's lead; even then, the Tavs missed two golden chances in the dying minutes which would have earned them a deserved draw.

Both matches were played in excellent spirit and well handled by referees Tony Joyce and Colin Southgate.

Team: A. Smith, M. Aldred, D. Stevens, M. Webb (J. Holmes), B. Burgess, S. Burrows, E. Mongan, G. Pilkington, R. Fisk (A. Hunt), T. Hollinsworth, T. Atabaky (M. Davis).
