The presentations followed a highly successful golf day – aided by superb weather – and we were grateful to Trevor Hollinsworth for organising the event which raised some useful funds for the club.

We also thank everyone for their support over the last few weeks of the season – which proved very difficult – and the Tavs Committee is already looking forward to the next campaign (the club’s 47th year playing Sunday football) in a highly positive mood.

Training will begin early in July and full details will follow shortly.

It would be good if everyone could start the new season with a ‘clean slate’ and, where moneys are owing to the club, details will follow.

A mixed midweek------------- 10 May 2013

First Team

Taverners 0, Stage Security 4

Despite having a depleted side – once again showing changes – the Tavs fought very hard throughout a sometimes feisty encounter, holding Stage Security to 0-0 until some way into the second half.

At the back, Tom Brooks and Geoff Leeks did very well but it was a case of everyone fighting for everything throughout the side. We conceded four goals in the second half and they were outstanding strikes to see Stage Security home.

Team: Davis, Fisk, Brooks, Leeks, Cunningham, Beaney, Pilkington, Southgate, Hollinsworth, Ayles, Warden (Sub: Bestley)

Reserves

Meadlands 1, Taverners reserves 2

A high wind blowing straight down the pitch looked likely to be a deciding factor and the Tavs had the advantage in the first half, opening the scoring when Gary Pilkington’s inswinging corner was tucked home by Paul Strutt at the far post.

The stiff breeze didn’t turn out to be such an advantage as all too often the ball was over-hit or sped away from our forwards so there was no further score in the opening period.

Meadlands clearly relished having the wind behind them after the break but they too found the ball flying beyond their strikers, often well behind our goal.

We played some neat football with Kevin Bolah showing good vision but we felt somewhat aggrieved to concede an equaliser which should have been ruled out. A Taverners defender was clearly fouled but play was allowed to continue and Meadlands levelled the scores.

We came back well and regained the lead when Trevor Hollinsworth threaded the ball through and Gary Pilkington scored what turned out to be the winner. We defended well in the closing stages with Graeme Warden having a fine match and, surviving one strong shout for a penalty, held out for a well-deserved win. Matt Pearson was cool and collected in goal throughout.

Referee Peter Owen had a good match and players often forget that, while football is difficult to play in a high wind, those conditions also make it awkward to referee.

Team: Pearson, Fisk, warden, Beaney, Lawrence, Bolah, Burrows Ryan, Pilkington, J Lambert, Strutt (Subs: Hollinsworth, Holmes)

Bob & Trevor would like to pay tribute to the players who turned out for the club two nights running. This was very much appreciated as we battle through an intensive closing stage of the season.

Bank Holiday Blues------------- 5 May 2013

First Team

Bourne Vale Rangers 4, Taverners 1

With a team showing six changes, the Tavs took a while to settle against Bourne Vale Rangers but we defended well and battled for everything in all areas. When we managed to go forward, we showed signs of stretching the Vale defence. Tom Brooks and Geoff Leeks did some sterling work in the middle of our back four.

We went a goal behind when Matt Davis tipped a shot onto the bar and the rebound was headed home but we shrugged it off and enjoyed much possession without achieving a great deal. Vale made the score 2-0 with another header before Trevor Hollinsworth hooked high into net from some distance to give us hope.

Half-chances went astray but, as we pressed forward for an equaliser, spaces appeared in defence and Vale scored twice more to win a sportingly contested match 4-1.

It was good to see ex-Taverners Lee and Jason Riley and tremendous that Daren Stevens was on the touchline, adding his support after his recent mis-hap. Both teams – and referee Richard Skinner – were grateful that Taverners provided linesmen at both ends in Pat Elvin and Dave Vincent.

Team: Davis, Warden, Leeks, Brooks, Pilkington, Burrows, Bestley, Herridge, Ayles, Hollinsworth, J Lambert (Sub: Bowman-Boyles).

Lack of numbers, and injuries, take toll------------- 1 May 2013

Reserves

Ipswich Spartans 4, Taverners Reserves 1

When we saw the fixture list for the end of the season. I have to say there were a few of us who were actually looking forward to it.

After 9 games in three weeks I have come to the conclusion that perhaps you can love playing football too much.

Don't get me wrong if every player signed on at the club had the same enthusiasm then the fixture back log would not have caused a problem at all.

But the reality is, as I have said before that most players signed do not have the commitment to be there for the club when asked.

We had to cancel our first game of the season because we did not have enough players to field a team.

The league fined us, gave the points to the other team and took away three points.

It is true we felt it to be harsh, but if you look at it from their point of view. They can only look at our players.

The fact is we have 56 players signed on. So they sit there and say why can't you field 4 teams in a week.

The reality is something we must address. Right now we have 14 players with various injuries and what is worse we have 18 players for one reason or another who have not been available for most of the season. Simple maths means we have 24 possible players available. But then you have the players who although committed are not available on a certain weekend due to other commitments. As a club we have got to address this and lose all the dead wood.

We need to sign on new committed players who will be available for the majority of the season. So rather than moan that Bob and I are fielding below strength teams. Look at yourselves, be part of Taverners, speak to your friends and get them to sign. But we don't need anymore maybe people. We need regular team members.

This game really was pushing our fitness to the extreme. With just 11 players. 2 already injured and a number of players who had been involved in all 9 games in the last three weeks. It was going to be difficult. But we started well and even took the lead when a Sam Burrows long throw was flicked on by Trevor Hollinsworth and Gary Pilkington was there to finish.

The lead was short lived and by half time the score was 3-1.

The second half was a story of very bad finishing by Spartans who missed chance after chance. There was fight in Taverners. Gary Pilkington, Kevin Boyles and Paul Bestley put in good performances. When you look back at the half we only conceded once and that has to be a positive.

We move on now to the next 3 games in 7 days with numbers and fitness fading fast

Team: Pearson, Leeks, Holmes, Boyles, Davis, Burrows, Pilkington, Bestley, Burgess, Herridge, Hollinsworth.

Sunday Slump!------------- 28 April 2013

First Team

Taverners 0, Selkerk 2

With the club’s resources stretched to the limits, we entertained Selkirk looking for revenge for our defeat at Dumbarton Road a few weeks ago.

Selkirk are a good young side and they enjoyed the fine playing surface and big pitch at Greshams, scoring a goal in each half to win the game 2-0. We were rarely in the match as an attacking force but, as has been evident throughout a difficult period for the club, we fought hard to the end.

Team: Davis, Warden, Brooks, Southgate, Cunningham, Ayles, Bestley, Glenister, High, Horsfall, Pilkington.

Reserves

Northern Celtic 6, Taverners Reserves 2

This team are third in the division. The score does not do us justice. the game went 1-0 to 1-1. 2-1 to 2-2 and by half time it was 3-2.

The first half goals from Trevor Hollinsworth when he gratefully took charge a badly headed clearance and fired home, taking him above Gary Cunningham as the club's all time leading scorer.

The second came from the returning Paul Strutt who's viciously curving corner found it's way straight into the goal.

Unfortunately this week has proved that our fitness cannot cope with this many games and we found it hard to compete it the second half.

The game had to be abandened on 83 minutes when Adam Hunt was injured badly with a kick to the face which caused some damage to his right eye. I can report that although very sore Adam is recovering.

Team: Pearson, Hunt, Leeks, Webb, Burgess, Lawrence, Burrows, Holmes, Fisk, Hollinsworth, Strutt.

Thursday Flop!------------- 25 April 2013

First Team

Taverners 1, Ipswich Thistle reserves 3

We went into our return game against Ipswich Thistle reserves determined to give a better showing than in the first meeting of the two teams at Gainsborough a fortnight ago.

Play was fairly even with everyone in the Tavs line-up working hard but few chances were created. We grabbed the lead when a fine move ended with Paul Bestley putting Duncan Southgate through and some deft footwork took Duncan round the keeper for a great goal.

Unfortunately, our celebrations had hardly died down when Thistle broke through and a low cross was tucked away at the far post.

The second half was ‘nip and tuck’ but our finishing was unsteady and we were severely punished when lost possession in the thistle half as they swept through to take a 2-1 lead. We had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down when Ryan Horsfall went down under a challenge but it was Thistle who scored the next goal for a 3-1 win.

The match had been prefaced by a presentation to goalkeeper Matt Davis to mark his 200th appearance for the club; well deserved for a real Taverners stalwart.

Team: Davis, Warden, Brooks, Cunningham, Beaney, Cutting (Sub: Pilkington), Bestley, Glenister, Southgate, Horsfall, Herridge (Sub: Hollinsworth)

Wednesday Win!------------- 24 April 2013

Reserves

Taverners reserves 2, Easton 0

After the heroics of Sunday, spirits within the Taverners camp were high for the visit of Easton and everyone worked tremendously hard for the whole ninety minutes.

Easton played some good football going forward and the Tavs were forced to defend but we did so resolutely and never letting our concentration lapse. The back three of Gary Cunningham, Geoff Leeks and Kevin Bowman-Boyles deserve special mention for their defensive efforts.

We had the boost of a goal from Gary Pilkington which came out of the blue, Pilky producing a right-foot shot from an acute angle which completely caught the keeper out and flew into the top far corner.

As the game progressed, we came into it as an attacking force but our strength was in never allowing Easton to settle on the ball and to get a toe in here or a full-blooded tackle there to prevent their attacking moves.

At the other end, we were strong on the break and forced several corners. Trevor Hollinsworth had swung a series of flag-kicks into the near post but it was a far-post alternative which brought our second goal. Marcus Webb headed the ball back into the danger area and Eamon Mongan headed home.

This was a fine performance in a sporting match, well handled by referee Peter Hart.

Team: Davis, Bowman-Boyles, Leeks, Cunningham, Burrows, Bestley, Mongan, Hollinsworth, Burgess (Sub: Hunt), Pilkington, Webb.

Six point Super Sunday------------- 21 April 2013

First Team

Martlesham Wanderers 2, Taverners 3

With the luxury of twelve players on duty, the Tavs looked determined to make up for a run of poor performances which had dragged us into a relegation fight.

We had the boost of a tremendous goal when a good build-up on the right ended with a good ball in by Ryan Horsfall and the raiding Lee Glenister vollied home.

We were, however, giving a lot of possession away and a goalmouth scramble, following a corner, led to Martlesham equalising through a Tavs own goal.

We regained the lead when Lee Glenister’s free-kick was headed across goal by the dominating Tom Brooks and, with the keeper unable to gather, Ryan Horsfall forced the ball home.

Martlesham forced the pace in the second half and equalised with a superb shot which flew over the helpless Matt Davis.

However, a hard-working morning was rounded off with a late Taverners winner. Darren Herridge broke through and hit the bar only for Ryan Horsfall to smash the rebound home from the edge of the box.

Team: Davis, Warden, Brooks, Leeks, Cunningham, High, Bestley (Sub: Ayles), Glenister, wray, Horsfall, Herridge.

Reserves

Taverners reserves 2, The Feathers 1

When we have all been forced to retire from playing football for whatever reason all we will have are the memories of past glory.

Imagine Duncan, Bully, Daren and Gary sitting in the common room of an old people's home. They begin to talk of their favourite memories of Taverners.

It starts with a beautiful sunny Sunday morning. Meeting in the car park at Greshams where Frank and Bob are already waiting. Sipping on a hot tea or coffee from the heavily stained flasks. Friends turn up one by one and the banter begins. The stories of the weekend past and weekends to come. After changing, walking out with some of your best mates over the lush green turf. As is often the case not everybody could make it. Too drunk to get out of bed, girlfriend problems, family commitments. Over the years we've heard every excuse.

So remember the Sunday when the reserves only had 10 players and two of those were injured and one had to leave at half time because of a family meal. A smile spreads across the faces of all four old gits.

That is exactly what happened on Sunday. The team centred around enjoying the game we love on a beautiful morning. Play football, trust each other, work for each other, encourage. The perfect Sunday morning was set.

From the first whistle it was obvious that everyone listened and everyone was committed to the game. To be a man short makes a game so very difficult so it was incredible that we took the game to Feathers and they were on the back foot from the start. After just 10 minutes Gary Pilkington was put through with the keeper to beat and he did in some style.

We would have been forgiven for going ultra defensive but we all said we must continue to push them back. We were rewarded with a second goal ten minutes later. Bevan Burgess headed accurately out of defence and Sam Burrows hit a through ball for Bobby Cutting and he lobbed the oncoming keeper from the corner of the 18 yard box.

Through the game Feathers never really caused a problem. Anything they threw at us we dealt with. However a cross from some 35yards somehow found it's way into the far corner to make it 2-1. Again we carried on with our game plan. Fitness was always going the be our biggest problem and the last 5 minutes had a few near misses and goal line clearances from Sam Burrows and Julian Holmes. But we ran out deserved winners. Exceptional performances all ten players. Gladiators everyone.

In the words of team captain Bevan Burgess this was one of the most satisfying results in 27 years of playing for Taverners. This is why we play. This is what we love. This is what we will talk about in the common room of the old peoples home when all other memories are fading this will remain bright and true. Bring on the next opponents!!!

Team: Pearson, Boyles, Burgess, Holmes, Fisk, Cutting, Mongan, Hollinsworth, Burrows, Pilkington.

Midweek Melancholy------------- 14 April 2013

First Team

Ipswich Postal Legends 6, Taverners 0

Facing top-of-the-table Postal Legends with a bare 12, the Tavs decided to pack the midfield and this looked a good strategy early on with Darren Herridge hitting the bar.

However, the Legends came back strongly and stretched our defence time and again, netting three goals before the break.

A fourth was conceded shortly after half-time but Taverners refused to lie down and fought hard to the end, restricting the Legends to two further goals.

Team: Halls, Beaney, Brooks, Cunningham, Burgess, Davis, Horsfall, Warden, Pilkington (Sub: Lawrence), Herridge, Hollinsworth

Reserves

Taverners reserves 0, Northam Celtic 3

With a strong-looking line-up, the reserves began well against Northam Celtic although we were having to watch their speedy counter-attacks.

Unfortunately, hesitancy at the back cost us dear as Celtic were allowd through to open the scoring and they made it 2-0 just before half-time when a free-kick from a wide position sailed into the net.

Undeterred, we pressed forward after the break and Duncan Southgate was unlucky to see his free-kick hit a post. Shortly afterwards, Marcus Webb was unlucky with a header from a corner but they were our best opportunities and Celtic scored a third.

Once again, everyone fought hard and the game was closer than the three goal margin of victory suggests.

Team: Pearson, Leeks, Halls, Webb, Cutting, Southgate, Horsfall, Ryan, Burgess, Burrows, Hollinsworth (Subs: Holmes, Deeney, Hunt).

Mixed Results------------- 14 April 2013

First Team

Kelsale 5, Taverners 3

Kelsale and the Tavs produced a tremendous game which had a bit of everything, and was hard-fought but with little nastiness or dissent to worry referee Richard Daniels who had an excellent match.

The early stages belonged to Kelsale but their finishing was poor. They looked to have scored on two occasions but Gary Cunningham and Geoff Leeks made fine goalline clearances.

Two Kelsale goals put them firmly in the driving seat but we fought back and played some fine football, the lively Ryan Horsfall being unlucky to hit the bar. We got into the game when Darren Herridge was fouled and Adam Beaney fired home the resulting spot-kick.

Kelsale restored their two goal lead and then extended their advantage to 5-1 just after half time. However, the Tavs were still looking good going forward and an incisive run from Ryan Horsfall ended with his shot being blocked and Graeme Warden followed up to score. We then netted a third when Jordan Ayles’ corner was firmly headed in by Adam Beaney.

Enjoying more of the play, we missed a couple of ‘sitters’ while Darren Herridge and Jordan Ayles both hit the woodwork.

We certainly could have grabbed something from our second half dominance although Kelsale will point to the torrid time they gave us early on.

A good match to play in and it was heartening to see everyone in a Taverners shirt work non-stop with 100% commitment.

Team: Davis, Beaney, Leeks, Cunningham, Pilkington, Cutting, Bestley, Horsfall, Ayles, Warden, Herridge.

1 defeat, 1 draw and 2 x 400 appreances------------- 7 April 2013

First Team

Ipswich Thistle reserves 4, Taverners 1

Last season we managed a ‘double’ over Ipswich Thistle’s reserve team but they have certainly re-built since then and were worthy winners on Sunday against a lack-lustre Taverners.

The eleven players on display should have done so much better but unfortunately turned in a poor performance which saw us concede two early goals and then a third before half time.

A re-shuffle, which saw Tom Brooks provide an energetic second half in midfield, produced a better showing and eventually we pulled a goal back when Sean High’s corner went direct into the net. Unfortunately, the Thistle scored a fourth late in the game, having missed a penalty earlier in the half.

The brightest note was the announcement that the match represented Duncan Southgate’s 400th appearance for the club and he was presented with a momento to mark a fine achievement.

Team: Davis, Warden, Brooks, Southgate, Cunningham, Ayles, Glenister, Bestley, High, Horsfall, Baldwin.

Reserves

Taverners Res 2, Halesworth Town 2

I was a very surprised Trevor Hollinsworth to receive an award from Pat Elvin before the start of the game for my
400th appearance for Taverners.

So after 36,000 minutes or, if you prefer 600 hours or, maybe in plain terms 20 years playing for Taverners I sat and thought. Has much changed.

The length of the shorts, the style of the shirts and the people I have played with.

It was appropriate that the man who brought me to Taverners was making a rare appearance on this day. Paul Ryan. The game hasn't changed that much. But the people who play have. Sunday morning used to be a real part of the weekend for all footballers. I remember listening to highly paid semi pro footballers talking about the Ipswich Sunday League long before I joined Taverners. The importance of the Sunday game sometimes seemed to proceed the Saturday fixture. It was probably due to the fact that Sunday is about playing with your mates and that was what made it important.

It was for that reason I turned down the chance to play for Taverners the first time I was asked, because I played in Sudbury Sunday League with my mates. Now it seems that people have other priorities. Just this week after playing for Taverners for a good number of years Philip (Dippy) Bowman moved permanently to Australia without so much as a goodbye. We all wish you well Dippy. Your rare goal celebrations will be missed.

So who are the people that made it important and kept me here at Taverners for 20 years.

Bob, Frank and Pat obviously are Taverners to the core and make it a pleasure to be connected.

As for the players. There are a few who I miss on a Sunday morning whether they liked me or not.

Tim Howard, Andy Spivey, Smokey, Andy Glover, Richard Fuller, Paul Oakshot, The Parker brothers, James Rice, Moggy, Karl Dawson and recent retirements of James Bullimore and Andy Lambert. The rest of you still play.

So thanks old and new players for the 400 happy Sunday mornings.

So what about the game....

It all started very well. Playing a new 3 5 2 formation seemed to suit and we went ahead after just a few minutes when Sam Burrows sent in a trade mark long throw to be met by Geoff Leeks who's backward header looped over the keeper.

We consolidated and looked pretty comfortable. Paul Ryan and Darren Herridge were controlling the midfield. Halesworth gave us no problem until we failed to clear simply to row Z and they scored leaving stand in keeper Matt Pearson no chance at all.

Again the second half was comfortable but as fitness slowly became an issue the much younger Halesworth found more openings and they scored with a shot from inside the box.

Halesworth could have sealed the game just five minutes later when the broke free and fired a full blown volley goalward. Somehow man of the match Matt Pearson dived full length across goal and beat the shot away.

To be very honest we did not create many chances even though we had a good share of the play. It took until the 70th minute for Sam Burrows to brake away and lift the ball over the advancing keeper.

The game was a little hot in places with some words back and forth and with just five minutes remaining Halesworth had there centre forward sent off for swearing at the referee. All reflection it was a fair result.

Team: Pearson, Hunt (Boyles), Leeks, Webb, Liddamore, Burgess, Burrows, Herridge, Ryan, Hollinsworth, T. Vincent

Different Sunday, same results------------- 31 March 2013

First Team

Taverners 3, Ipswich Postals Legends 5

The were were two stages of our match against Postals where the Tavs had to show great character and determination to get back into the game and not to lie down and die!

Firstly, we had a torrid opening spell which saw us go behind and then concede a second goal but we stuck at our task and were rewarded when Adam Beaney crossed and Graeme Warden used his strength to force the ball past the keeper and then to bundle it home with a defender in close attendance.

The second came after an hour’s play, when Postals had produced some outstanding finishing to go 5-1 ahead. Here again, it would have been easy for heads to go down but, with Lee Glenister using the ball well we came back and Graeme Warden scored his second goal from the edge of the box.

Then Bobby Cutting was brought down and Tom Brooks – dominating throughout – fired home the penalty.

With the score at 3-5, we might have snatched another to have made the last few minutes interesting but overall Postals were a good side and deserved their win. The match was a good advert for Sunday football with very little to worry referee Adrian Kersey who had a good game.

With no substitutes available, several players had to battle through, including skipper Gary Cunningham who took a knock in the first half.

Team: Davis, Beaney, Southgate, Brooks, Cunningham, Cutting, Bestley, Glenister, High, Warden, Ayles.

Reserves

Gardiners Arms 6 Taverners Res 2

So the broken record is still repeating the same phrase of the song. Once again injury, holiday and just plain laziness left us with 10 players. We have 56 players signed on but only 21 of them were available for the 1st team and reserves this week. We must all agree it is a very poor return for the amount of time and effort put in by committee members and those of you who are ever present.

So anyway the game started well. We were totally on a level par and after just five minutes a long ball from Will Lawrence bounced in favour of Eamon Mongan and he bravely beat the goalkeeper and defender to head the ball home from 18 yards.

Gardiners Arms grew more confident but it was an own goal from Darren Warner that got them going. They then proceeded to score 3 more in just over ten minutes to make it 4-1 at half time. Forced changes at half time saw Clive Halls come out of goal to play centre half. Suddenly there was a more positive look to Taverners and we pressed to get make into the game. This came when a foul was committed just outside the box. Trevor Hollinsworth scored from the free kick beating the wall and keeper into the far corner, pulling him level with Gary Cunningham at the top of the Taverners' all time goal scoring table

Taverners found themselves often very short at the back but Geoff Leeks, Clive Halls and Gary Pilkington cleared up well. More chances did come our way without reward. Gardiners Arms missed and handful. They scored but it looked like honours would be even for the second half at 1-1 but a very late penalty saw them get their 6th.

Reserve team: Halls, Warner, Leeks, Lawrence, Burrows, Mongan, Herridge, Pilkington, Pearson, Hollinsworth.

Away win for First team------------- 17 March 2013

First Team

Bucklesham 1, Taverners 3

Fielding a side which showed nine changes – including an entirely different back four – it was no wonder that the Tavs took a while to settle and we had a very uneven first half with few chances being created.

It was as well that the pairing of Daren Stevens and Gary Cunningham were in good form – Gary deserving particular mention for a real ‘skipper’s game’ throughout.

We were caught by a counter-attach shortly before the break to give Bucklesham the lead but, thankfully, we ‘rolled our sleeves up’ in the second period and gradually got control with Lee Glenister showing good touches and using the ball well.

We had the good fortune to equalise when Darren Herridge’s cross was headed in by a defender and took the lead when Bobby Cutting’s excellent cross was headed home by Darren himself.

Ryan Horsfall rounded off a good display up front with a well-taken goal to make the final score 3-1.

The match had its feisty moments and, in one of these, Daren Stevens and an opponent were dismissed. Referee Paul Moss had a good game.

At last, two games! Alas, two defeats------------- 3 March 2013

First Team

Selkirk 2, Taverners 0

A Taverners first team showing several changes visited Selkirk on a difficult Dumbarton Road surface but the conditions were, of course, the same for both sides so no excuses.

We battled throughout the side and more steadiness in front of goal could have given us a result. We only managed a few chances but were unable to trouble the Selkirk keeper.

At the other end it has to be said that Clive Halls kept us in the match with a series of superb saves; otherwise, Clive’s anticipation was good and his handling excellent.

Duncan Southgate caught the eye with a sure-footed display at the back alongside Graeme Warden who also did well.

We conceded two late goals, the first of which saw us a little aggrieved that Gary Cunningham looked to have been pushed in the build-up.

Team: Halls, Beaney, Warden, Southgate, Cunningham, Horsfall (Sub: Bolah), Bestley, High, Pilkington, Stevens, Glenister.

Reserves

Taverners Reserves 2, The Garderner's Arms 3

I truly wish I could give you a new story. One where everyone selected turns up to play and every Sunday we play to our full potential. But unfortunately this is not the case. Without a single doubt in my mind I can say if we had the full support of the squad of players we have signed on I know we would be in the top three teams in this league.

It is all too easy to forget that just a few seasons ago we were playing in Division 1, but unfortunately the story of this game is all too familiar.

Two players failed to turn up leaving us with a serious problem in midfield. We changed the formation and players positions and took to the field. It was very obvious from the first few minutes that the chance of a winning result today was very good, but one slip up in defence and we conceded.

For the remainder of the half Gardeners Arms caused no real threat. Taverners however went close time after time. Darren Herridge, debutant Rob Cutting, Trevor Hollinsworth and Sam Burrows went close.

It was unbelievable that we were still behind at half time.

The second half saw more of the same thing with Taverners pressing hard to draw level, but again it was Gardeners Arms who scored.

More pressing and finally a reward when Adam Hunt won the ball at the half way line. His through ball found Darren Herridge whose first shot could only be parried by the keeper. Darren followed up to gather the ball and confidently strike home.

It seemed obvious that with patience Taverners would equalise but again we went behind further with probably the only goal that could not have been avoided.

Chances came thick and fast. Vaughn Gledhill missed twice from close range. Trevor Hollinsworth had an in swinging corner cleared off the line.

Free kick after free kick, corner after corner with no reward. With just 2 minutes to go a long clearance caught the opposition asleep and Sam Burrows went through to round the keeper to score. Was great to see Marcus Webb, Vaughn Gledhill and Adam Hunt after some time away from the team.

Team: Davis, Burgess, Leeks, Webb, Lawrence, Cutting, Hunt, Gledhill (Holmes), Burrows, Hollinsworth, Herridge.

4 goals = 3 points------------- 17 February 2013

Reserves

Taverners reserves 4, Whitton Rangers 1

It was good to see a Taverners side back in action after some frustrating weeks without matches and the reserves fought out a well-contested game against Whitton Rangers with all the players doing well on a heavy pitch.

After Rangers had enjoyed early possession, the Tavs grabbed the lead when Trevor Hollinsworth’s right wing corner flew in at the far-post. We added to our advantage when a great bit of pace from Sam Burrows took him clear and his well-directed cross was forced home by the lively Jordan Ayles.

Rangers certainly came at us in the second period and a free header from a corner brought them back into contention. However, we fought for everything with Geoff Leeks doing well and Matt Davis’ handling and positioning outstanding in goal.

The next goal was going to be vital and it came from a free-kick on the left swung in by Sam Burrows. The goalkeeper misjudged the flight and Tom Brooks was on hand to score.

One of several good moves from the Tavs saw Darren Herridge find Brooksy and a powerful shot gave the keeper no chance for a well-earned 4-1 victory.

Reserves get sucker punched------------- 3 February 2013

Reserves

Ipswich Rangers 3, Taverners Reserves 1

The reserves made the club’s first visit for many years to our old home pitch – Bourne Park ‘B’: the scene of many Taverners’ memories for much of the 1970s – to play Ipswich Rangers.

With a strong line-up in action, we had the advantage of the slope in the first half and a series of corners produced several chances which we unfortunately failed to accept. We were unable to get enough ball into the box to threaten while Rangers defended well sometimes deep in their own penalty area. Eventually we took the lead when Gary Pilkington crossed from the left and a defender sliced into his own net.

Positive words at half-time should have been heeded because we were caught in possession, deep in our own half, immediately afterwards and Rangers sped through to equalise from close range.

The Tavs weathered a storm for a while, with Rangers enjoying the benefit of the incline and forcing a number of corners but without success; Graeme Warden showed up well alongside the influential Andy Lambert at the heart of our defence.

We gradually got on top with Eamon Mongan working hard and several chances came our way but were scorned.

With the game in the balance, Rangers caught us on a counter-attack and found the corner of the net for 2-1; we pressed forward in search of an equaliser only to be outpaced in a breakaway and number three was conceded.

It was good to see Sam Vincent back in town on a brief visit from his home in Kent.

Team: Davis, Burgess, Warden, Lambert, Lawrence (Sub: Beaney), Burrows (Sub: Ayles), Mongan, Herridge, Pilkington, Baldwin (Sub: Holmes), Hollinsworth.

Another Baldwin Hat-trick secures Generation Game------------- 13 January 2013

Reserves

Taverners reserves 7, Meadlands 0

A strong reserve line-up took the match to Meadlands straight from the kick-off on a bitterly cold morning.

Using the excellent surface well, the Tavs brought everyone into the game with some good build-ups but it was a direct approach which opened the scoring, Ben Baldwin finding the space for a shot from the edge of the box and tucking the ball into the corner. We made it 2-0 when Andy Lambert unleashed a shot from 35 yards which went in over the keeper.

Ben Baldwin was proving a big handful for the Meadlands defenders and, collecting Andy Lambert’s pass, some neat footwork took him through the defence for 3-0.

Meadlands had shown up well in attack and they had a good deal of possession in the early part of the second half only to find Karl Weir and Geoff Leeks in uncompromising form.

We made the score 4-0 when Ben timed his pass to perfection and Jordan Lambert swept the ball past the keeper. Ben was involved in neat interplay with Darren Herridge and Darren put our fifth goal away.

Having previously hit the post twice, Ben was not to be denied his third hart-trick in as many games for Taverners – driving the ball high into the nety from Andy Lambert’s pass.

Darren Herridge was then brought down by the keeper and Trevor Hollinsworth thumped the spot-kick home.

Trev’s goal meant that three generations of his family had found the net on the same day – surely a record – on a day when the reserves picked up their first league win and a most satisying clean sheet.

The game was played in good spirit and was well-handled by referee Henry Hogan.

Team: Davis, Burgess, Leeks, Weir (Sub: Holmes), Pilkington, Burrows, A Lambert, Brooks, J Lambert (Sub: Hollinsworth), Herridge, Baldwin.

Unbeaten start to New Year------------- 6 January 2013

First Team

Taverners 5, Martlesham Wanderers 2

Both teams looked dangerous in attack early on with the defences finding the sticky pitch difficult.

The Tavs grabbed the lead when Ben Baldwin’s strong run took him to the bye-line and his low cross was turned in by a defender. Poor defending enabled ex-Taverner Ashley Rankin a straightforward finish and then Martlesham took the lead with a well-struck shot from the edge of the box. Numerous corners at both ends of the pitch came to nothing although Ben Baldwin came the nearest with a fine header against the bar.

We got off to a great start in the second half when Ben Baldwin’s thundering free-kick from all of 35 yards was half-parried by the keeper and Andy Lambert was the first to react and fire home from close range. The visiting defence were particularly worried by the strong running of Ryan Horsfall and Ben and, when Ben was brought down, he was quickly up to convert the penalty and give Taverners a 3-2 lead.

A long ball was then flicked on by the hardworking Graeme Warden and Ben Baldwin raced through for 4-2 before a neat interchange with Ryan gave Ben the chance to round off a superb hat-trick and a 5-2 victory. This was Ben’s second hat-trick in two appearances; what a start!

This was a tremendous performance from the Tavs – particularly after the break when we took the game by the scruff of the neck – and all twelve players deserve full credit for their efforts in heavy conditions.

Andy Chapman was always in charge in the middle and refereed well.

Team: Halls, Beaney, A Lambert, Southgate, Cunningham, Horsfall, Glenister, Bestley, High, Baldwin, Warden (Sub: J Lambert).

Reserves

The Feathers 2, Taverners Reserves 2,

It's never a feeling of joy that you have to get up on a Sunday morning and travel to play at Eastward Hoe. You can be assured of a few things over crowded dressing rooms, bad weather, mud and a weak referee. All of these we had in abundance. Fog shrouded the pitch as we left the cramped dressing room. Luckily our pitch was at the top of the hill so the mud was minimal.

Local knowledge in the shape of Matt Davis told us that the fog would burn off by half time. It in fact got worse although never threatened the game. It sounds like a bad start but in reality Taverners were very up beat with three new signings. Adam Gardiner, Karl Weir and Darren Herridge and the return of Eamon Mongan.

So with their strongest side for some considerable time Taverners took the game to Feathers and with 80% possesion they were rewarded after 15 minutes when a Bevan Burgess cross was deflected from an attempted clearance to the far post to be met by Trevor Hollinsworth to head home.

Feathers hardly got out of their own half so it was a massive shock when on their first attack they scored to make it 1-1. Taverners pushed on and chances came thick and fast without a finish to put them back into the lead. It was again a break away by Feathers. It saw their No.9 see what was obviously a cross fly into the far corner of the Taverners net.

2-1 down at half time but it was obvious that more chances would come. Within two minutes of the re-start Paul Strutt sent a through ball to Darren Herridge who went round the keeper to score.

Taverners were in full control but chances were just not finished. A very weak referee was affecting the game very heavily by now. Combined with a linesman who was obviously trying to help Feathers survive the onslaught it looked like Taverners were to be robbed of this victory. But with five minutes to go a cross was met by the head of Trevor Hollinsworth who directed the ball into the 6 yard to be met by Eamon Mongan to head home. A late flag and a weak referee saw the goal disallowed for offside. It was a disappointing result but this is the first point of the season.

Team: Davis, Burgess, Leeks, Weir, Pilkington, Burrows, Mongan, Gardiner, Strutt, Hollinsworth, Herridge.

Not much Xmas cheer------------- 16 December 2012

First Team

Sunday Shield round 4: Taverners 1, Birdbrook Plough 4
A wet end to the week meant that our pitch at Greshams had to monitored carefully to avoid Birdbrook having another wasted trip and a hard-fought cup tie ensued with the Tavs holding the lead for a good half hour but finally seeing their hopes dashed.

We began brightly without making many chances but Birdbrook came back and, just as it looked as if they were getting on top, we took the lead with a penalty. Ryan Horsfall burst into the box and was brought down for a spot-kick which was duly dispatched by Tom Brooks. Brooksy had a tremendous match for Taverners with Duncan Southgate doing well beside him in the absence of the unwell Andy Lambert.

We had defended well throughout the first half and, with a goal lead to protect, we continued to fight for everything.

However, our opponents were pressing and eventually they equalised with a neatly taken goal past Matt Davis who had done well in goal. We hardly had time to take breath before Birdbrook were suddenly 3-1 up and in control. We pressed forward and, with gaps appearing, Birdbrook grabbed a fourth goal.

We wish them well and thank Steve Bassingthwaighte for an excellent match in the middle. Thanks also to Bevan Burgess for the sausage & chips after the game.

Reserves Cup Runneth Over------------- 9 December 2012

Reserves

Sunday Trophy: Mildenhall High Town 9, Taverners reserves 1

The big news was
Bevan Burgess’ achievement in playing his 600th game for the club but, despite this and surely the boost of playing in senior league surroundings, The Tavs’ interest in the Sunday Trophy ended very abruptly with a comprehensive defeat at Mildenhall against the High Town.

Kicking with the slope in the first half, we really should have reached half time with a clean sheet because the two goals that High Town scored were very much self-inflicted. We had enjoyed a fair amount of possession but the ball was given away far too cheaply. Trevor Hollinsworth spotted problems in our line-up and worked very hard to fill them. Richard Liddamore made several good saves throughout the half.

As we faced the slope after the break, we were clearly going to be up against it and two early goals ensured Mildenhall’s progress to the next round and meant that we were going to endure a torrid morning. It’s too late to dwell on our shortcomings but too few people were prepared to show the commitment necessary to get anything but a dire result.

Will Lawrence had a tremendous shot well-saved and Zico Wright netted the Taverners consolation effort.

The game was played in a sporting manner and well refereed by Mr S Darvill.

Team: Liddamore, Burgess, Leeks, Holmes (Sub: Bowman-Boyles), Lawrence, Bolah, Deeney, Pilkington, Wright, Hollinsworth, Burrows.

Mixed results------------- 18 November 2012

First Team

Taverners 3, Bucklesham 2

A most eventful morning!

Despite having what looked to be a strong line-up, we began slowly and fell behind when a forward got infront of Clive Halls and flicked his header over him and into the net.

In a hard-fought – often feisty – encounter, we gradually got back into the game and we equalised when Tom Brooks was brought down in the box and Tom stepped up to fire the spot-kick into the corner. We then took the lead through Paul Bestley – on his welcome return after injury – a far-post effort from a deep cross from Daren Stevens.

Clive Halls had taken a bad knock early on and, as this worsened, he was replaced in goal by Matt Pearson.

The Tavs got off to a great start in the the second half. Daren was pushed over by the keeper and Tom Brooks smashed his penalty into the opposite corner from his first effort to make the score 3-1.

However, Bucklesham reduced the arrears to 3-2 and we relied on some spirited and determined play to keep our lead. Matt Pearson made some good saves and showed clean handling although our oponents nearly equalised with a fine shot which hit the bar.

The game had simmered throughout, with referee Adrian Kersey having to deal with some difficult situations and he had no alternative but to send off a player from each team (Matty Wray the Tav involved) after a set-to in the dying minutes.

Team: Halls (Sub: Pearson), Bullamore, A Lambert, Brooks, Cunningham, Southgate, Bestley, Glenister, Wray, Stevens, J Lambert (Sub: High).

Reserves Cup Run Continues------------- 11 November 2012

Reserves

Sunday Trophy: Taverners Reserves 6, Eastern Phoenix 2

A much-changed reserve side hosted this re-scheduled Sunday trophy tie against Eastern Phoenix on a heavy pitch at Greshams with good support from the sidelines, including Henry Chard who was back on his feet again after his second knee injury; Henry has a visit to a top surgeon lined up and we hope this goes well.

We began well with some dangerous crosses and corners stretching the Phoenix defence. It was, therefore, a surprise when we went behind although it was a fine goal – a snap shot from a slight angle high into the corner.

Back came the Tavs and we equalised when the debut-making Andy Skinner found Adam Beaney and he burst through to drive the ball past the keeper. Both Trevor and Sam Burrows were producing threatening corners and from one of these Gary Pilkington netted in style.

A defensive error let Phoenix in for an equaliser but Taverners regained the lead at 3-2 when the ball ran loose following another corner and Matt Pearson smashed it low into the net.

A single goal advantage can look flimsy and Phoenix had their fair share of possession in the second half, only to find the Tavs defence resolute and Richard Liddamore alert behind them.

We gave ourselves some breathing space when Sam Burrows hit in a free-kick from wide on the left and, with the goalkeeper distracted by a Tav forward’s challenge, the ball found the far corner.

A neat free-kick from Vaughn Gledhill gave Beaney the chance for his second before Sam Burrows’ corner was put away by Gary Pilkington for his brace and a 6-2 final score.

The ‘touchline opinion’ had no doubt that the the hardworking Pilky was the Tavs ‘man of the match.’

Credit to both teams for a sporting, hard-fought match which was well-handled by referee Dean Robertson.

Team: Liddamore, Burgess, Leeks, Bowman, Lawrence (Sub: Holmes), Beaney, Skinner (Sub: Bowman-Boyles), Pilkington, Pearson (Sub: Gledhill), Burrows, Hollinsworth.

First Team Progress, Reserves Rained-off------------- 4 November 2012

First Team

Sunday Shield: Playford 1, Taverners 4

With a strong-looking side – and showing a good deal of confidence and determination – the Tavs dominated the early stages and forced several corners. We had the boost of an early lead when a superb deep cross from Matt Davis was met on the volley by Lee Glenister at the far post for a fine goal.

Although we enjoyed most of the play with Lee showing classy touches in midfield, Playford broke quickly and we were glad to see Tom Brooks in the heart of our defence alongside Andy Lambert. Brooksy made the score 2-0 when he forced the ball home in a goalmouth scramble.

Matt Davis sustained a nasty wrist injury and was replaced by Jordan Lambert but we are pleased to report that Matt’s subsequent visit to the hospital revealed no break, only a ligament injury.

Jordan netted his first goal for the club when he was sent through by Duncan Southgate and calmly swept the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. Playford reduced the arrears but any Taverners nerves were settled when Sean High crossed the ball low and Daren Stevens scored at the far post.

This was our best performance for some time; but credit to everyone in both camps – players, substitutes, referee, linesmen and supporters – for enduring fearful conditions with good humour. Also good to see old friend Martin Stiff in his assessor’s capacity.

Team: Halls, Bullamore, A Lambert, Brooks, Cunningham, Davis (Sub: J Lambert), Glenister, Southgate, Wray, Stevens, Vincent (Sub: High).

The reserve team’s Sunday Trophy tie against Eastern Phoenix only required a brief pitch inspection by the match referee before being called off. It has been re-scheduled for this coming Sunday (11 November) at Greshams, kick-off 10.30am.

Lack of numbers results in 2 heavy defeats------------- 28 October 2012

First Team

Another in a series of heavy defeats for the Tavs which is a challenge to us all!

The work goes on to find answers to the problems we are encountering week after week and the club committee has a resolve to overcome them.

Once again the spirit was good but it was a pity that Lee Glenister, Kevin Bolah and Zico Wright had to make their 1st team debuts in such a match. We were grateful to Daren Stevens for volunteering to keep goal while Paul Ryan was most unfortunate to leave the fray just before half-time with a calf injury.

Adam Beaney netted the Taverners goal with a header from a corner.

Team: Stevens, Beaney, Bullamore, Lambert, Cunningham, Bolah, Glenister, Ryan, Burgess, Wright, Pilkington.

Another drubbing------------ 21 October 2012

First Team

Ferryboat 9, Taverners 0

An extraordinary nine changes were necessary for what was always going to be a difficult cup tie against Ferryboat and we were duly blasted out of the Senior Cup by our Premier Division opponents.

As was made clear afterwards, the thirteen players who were on duty cannot be criticised, they all fought very hard without giving up.

Richard Liddamore did well in a ‘baptism of fire’ in goal, Daren Stevens was unlucky to hit the bar early on while Matty Wray was tigerish in midfield. Jason Deeney was most unlucky to twist his knee and have to leave the fray.

The last few weeks have seen defeats of a level that we have not experienced for many, many years. However, we shall do everything possible to improve the playing strength of the Club and the spirit and good humour in the dressing room illustrated the fact that the management’s determination is shared.

Team: Liddamore, Davis, Bullamore, Powell, Cunningham, Deeney (Sub: Roche), Ryan, Southgate, Wray, Stevens, Pilkington (Sub: Hollinsworth).

Let's forget about this one------------- 14 September 2012

First Team

Taverners 1, Goddard & co. 9

Another week which got more hectic towards the end with a final re-shuffle necessary shortly before the kick-off, ended with the first team showing six changes from last week – hardly ideal preparations for a match against Goddard & Co, who had give us a thrashing only a few weeks ago.

The final change saw Gary Pilkington – already changed in readiness for the reserves’ match at Whitton Sports Centre – dash up to Greshams. Our thanks are due to Pilky for accepting the switch without turning a hair and he played with his usual spirit and determination and might well have got his name on the scoresheet.

After weathering an early storm, we took the lead with a quite magnificent goal from Ryan Horsfall who collected the ball in his own half and used his pace and strength to burst through the Goddard defence before driving the ball high into the net. Ryan went on to produce an outstanding display wide on the right which might have led to more goals both for himself and his team-mates.

Unfortunately, we were unable to keep the lead and by half-time trailed by 4-1. Our second half display continued to be full of spirit and effort but we couldn’t cope with Goddard’s lively attack and they netted another five goals. We were unlucky to lose skipper Andy Lambert, injured, early in the second period.

Credit to all the Tavs on duty who battled away even when the game was out of reach and maintained good team spirit throughout.

Team: Halls, Beaney, Lambert (Sub: Roche), Cunningham, Wray, Horsfall, Bestley, High, Burgess, Stevens, Pilkington.

Reserves

Whitton Rangers 3, Taverners Res 1 A game that looked like a formality turned into a shambles.

After just 4 minutes some great work from Trevor Hollinsworth and Kevin Bolah on the left saw him work his way into the opposing box where he cut the ball back for an easy side foot from Paul Strutt to score. Whitton Rangers had no real threat apart from a long ball from ex Taverner Lewis Parsley.

The only reason Taverners did not storm ahead was simply not being able to provide that final killer pass as they did for the first goal. So at halftime with a 1-0 lead this point was addressed.

Play as a team. Look for someone in a good position and feed him a good quality ball. It all seems simple enough. Whitton would certainly not have an answer to it. But sometimes players you think are listening are just not. Some players believe they have an ability that they do not. As a team we are strong. As 11 individuals we were weak. There were exceptions. Paul Ryan, playing his long awaited 200th game for Tavs, fought hard to bring some sort of order. Richard Liddamore in goal was strong a not a fault for any of what was about to happen.

From Taverners taking a corner the ball was hit long again, but this time Rangers had a player on the end of it as the clearance sailed over the heads of Taverners defence. He scored with not much opposition. So okay they had a lucky brake. But then within just a few minutes they score again when Richard Liddamore easily collected the ball on the edge of his 18yrd only to be knocked over by Geoff Leeks. The ball spun loose and they scored.

Taverners tried to assemble themselves into an attacking force with little effect. Kevin Bolah should have scored after Trevor Hollinsworth put him clean through. But apart from one more shot from Paul Ryan Taverners never got a shot on target.

With just seconds to go a simple ball running back to Richard Liddamore was helped on it's way but far too heavy and the back pass went straight passed him for an own goal from Geoff Leeks.

So are we pointing the finger at any one player? No this was a team fault and one which has to be addressed. Team orders will be listened to and carried out or someone else will be put into that position who can help the team prosper.

Team: Liddamore, Davis, Leeks, Bowman, Lawrence, Burrows, Ryan, Strutt, Bolah, Hollinsworth, Wright, Pearson, Holmes.

Great Brittain! ------------- 7 October 2012

First Team

Taverners 3, Ipswich Hospitals 2

A succession of changes and re-arrangements throughout the week meant that the Tavs team which entertained Ipswich Hospitals showed six changes from the previous week. However, in perfect footballing conditions, we maintained the tremendous team-spirit shown at Chelmondiston with everyone totally committed to the cause.

We got off to a great start, Gary Cunningham’s through ball finding Jamie Brittain who swept through on his own to score. We repeated the trick a little later, Daren Stevens providing a clever pass and Jamie finishing off. Other chances went close as it seemed that we were on the way to a convincing win.

Unfortunately, our two goal advantage led to over-confidence and Hospitals fought back to level the scores at 2-2 before half-time.

The second half saw both teams battling hard and finally the chance for a winning goal came when the hard-working Sean High was heavily brought down by the Hospitals keeper and Jamie Brittain stepped forward to net the spot-kick.

Jamie’s penalty registered a well-taken hat-trick – a remarkable effort when he only became available to play two or three hours before kick-off. Well done, Jamie!

And all credit to the whole side – we played as a team with everyone playing their part and got our due reward; the first team’s first cup victory for a few years!

The match was played in good spirit and well-refereed by Nigel Budinger.

Team: Halls, Warden, A Lambert, Southgate, Cunningham, Davis (Sub: J Lambert), Bestley, High, Betts, Brittain, Stevens.

Action shots can be seen

The 1st team’s reward for their win over Ipswich Hospitals is an away 3rd round tie against Playford, scheduled for 4 November 2012.

The reserves play Eastern Phoenix in the 3rd Round of the Sunday Trophy at home on the same day.

Baby Betsy Blue for Brooksy ------------- 3 October 2012

The Club would like to pass our congratulations on to Tom & Emma Brooks on the safe arrival of Baby Betsy Blue. Mother and baby doing well!

Sunday, Double Sunday! ------------- 30 September 2012

First Team

Chelmondiston 2, Taverners 5

A Taverners side showing several changes had a determined look straight from the start against Chelmondiston (fomerly Whitton Smashers) and soon our heavy defeat against Goddard & Co was just a bad memory.

The back four were well-organised and chose the right options – whether it was a long clearance or playing football out of defence. The midfield quartet kept their shape and worked tremendously hard while the front two looked dangerous whenever in possession. Ben Baldwin made an imnmediate impact – with his availability and movement – which boosted everyone.

We took the lead when Ben was tripped as he sped into the box and Tom Brooks – superb at the back – coolly netted the penalty.

We were having to defend as well and Clive Halls dealt with some dangerous corners throughout the game very well.

The Tavs had an early boost in the second half when Andy Lambert’s free-kick was headed in by Daren Stevens. A third goal followed, Ben Baldwin latching onto a long ball from Jake Betts to beat the keeper but Chelmondiston immediately reduced the arrears.

Matty Wray was outstanding on the left and he had a hand in both Ben Baldwin’s goals which completed a superb hat-trick and put Taverners 5-1 ahead.

Chelmondiston again pulled a goal back but this was a first class Taverners performance with all thirteen players deserving great credit.

The match itself hardly saw a foul worthy of the name and it was well-handled by Noel Wilson.

Team: Halls, Beaney, A Lambert, Brooks, Betts, Burrows (Sub: J Lambert), Bestley, High (Sub: Warden), Wray, Stevens, Baldwin.

Reserves

Taverners Res. 3, Chantry Phoenix 2

With three new signings which included goalkeeper Richard Liddamore, midfield player Kevin Bolah and striker Zico Wright it was a match of discovery for Taverners.

It all started well with a strong wind against them. Taverners pressed the Pheonix defence. Most of the play was in the Pheonix half. But against the run of play Pheonix scored when the ball was cleared from a Taverners corner to find the Pheonix striker alone on the halfway line. He ran through to score.

Taverners continued to press. Trevor Hollinsworth hit the post from 25yrds and Zico Wright was very lively up front. Again the ball was cleared from a Taverners corner but this time the ball fell to Trevor Hollinsworth who hit a first time cross which was met on the volley by Gary Cunningham to score.

The game was totally in Taverners control now and they pressed from all area's. Bevan Burgess burst into 18yrd box and his attempted chip hit the defender squarely on the hand. Trevor Hollinsworth converted the penalty.

With the wind now behind them Taverners had the lion share of the game and chances were plenty. Zico Wright had at least 6 good chances, Kevin Bolah also figured well in the attacks. But it was Paul Strutt who increased the lead as he gathered the ball on the edge of the 18yrd box and delicately chipped the ball over the keeper.

In one mad minute Taverners dropped their guard and Pheonix scored to make the remaining 10 minutes very nerve wracking but Taverners held their lead to win the game.

Team: Liddamore, Davis, Leeks, Cunningham, Lawrence, Bolah, Pilkington, Wright, Burgess, Strutt, Hollinsworth. Subs: Sherman, Holmes.

Early cup exit for Reserves ------------- 23 September 2012

Reserves

Taverners Res. 1, Claydon Galaxy 4

The reserves – showing a few changes to enable injured players to start their come-backs plus a little stiffening – gave a very good account of themselves in the first half of their home cup tie against Claydon Galaxy with everyone battling hard backed by some resolute and intelligent defending. Graeme Warden showed up well at right back.
The young Claydon side enjoyed most of the play but they were rarely allowed to close in on the Tavs’ goal and, when they did, Matt Davis was in fine form.

Somewhat against the run of play, we grabbed the lead. James Bullamore’s deep free-kick led to a goalmouth scramble and Tom Brooks – back from an injured toe – fired home.

The start of the second half saw Claydon press forward but we continued to defend well, with Liam Powell outstanding. Unfortunately, we conceded a soft equaliser and a second goal, with our offside appeals failing, put Claydon firmly in the driving seat.

Two late goals gave Claydon a 4-1 win which was somewhat flattering, bearing in mind the hard work put in by Taverners in all areas.

Referee Gareth Moir had a good match.

Team: Davis, Warden, Powell, Bullamore, Cunningham, Strutt (Sub: Fisk), Bestley, Brooks, Burgess, Deeney (Sub: Pearson), Burrows.

First Team

Goddard & co. 7, Taverners 1

Reserves

Taverners Res. 0, Ipswich Spartans 6

Team: Davis, Fisk, Bowman-Boyles, Warden, Cunningham, Burrows, Pearson, Pilkington, J Lambert, May, Hollinsworth.

The ‘positive’ from these games was that we were able to field two full teams. Both before and since the season’s opening day – when we failed to raise a reserve side – much hard work has gone into signing and registering new players.

The first team was clearly not at its strongest, for various reasons, and this naturally had an adverse effect upon the reserves.

It was clear from the opening stages at Gainsborough that the Tavs were going to struggle to cope with Goddard’s pace and a thoroughly miserable morning followed. We were already eight goals down when debutant Jason Deeney scored his first goal for the club after persistent work by Daren Stevens.

The reserves also found their young and lively opponents difficult to handle with several of our players still searching for match-fitness. Good reports of Graeme Warden and Gary Cunningham.

We shall be continuing to do everything possible to strengthen the squad but we must appeal to our players to assist by introducing newcomers.

Season kicks off with Generation Game! ------------- 2 September 2012

First Team

Taverners 2, RE United 86 2

With two defeats against RE United last season and a line-up which showed many changes, we faced our opening match with some apprehension but it was soon clear that the eleven Tavs on display were prepared to battle for everything and were perfectly capable of playing some good football.

Both teams had chances - the Tavs hitting the post twice, once through a thundering effort from Jordan Ayles, while Clive Halls was in superb form at the other end.

Eventually RE United went ahead when we lost concentration from a throw-in but Taverners literally scored straight from the kick-off. Trevor Hollinsworth's long ball was rescued by the impressive Matty Wray and a low cross was put away by Daren Stevens.

The second half opened up with players on both sides feeling the pace but after we had hit the post again - Trev unlucky - RE United took the lead when one of their shots hit a post and rebounded in off the luckless Clive. Our keeper had continued to make some outstanding saves - one a double-block - and deserved better fortune.

A header from Trevor Hollinsworth hit the bar and it was beginning to look as if our luck was out when, suddenly, with two minutes left Trev produced a fine pass and the tireless Jordan Ayles beat the keeper to the ball and saw his shot go in off the underside of the bar.

It would be unfair to single anyone out. This was a tremendous effort from everyone who took part and gave us all a lot of heart for the battles ahead.

The match was played in good spirit and was well-refereed by Henry Hogan.

On a 'stats-note', Taverners had three generations of one family playing: Trevor, his son-in-law Andy and grandson Jordan Lambert; certainly a first for the Club if not the League!
