Reserves 35 seconds away from Cup glory------------ 11 May 2014

Reserves
Minor Cup Final

Briarbank Rovers 4, Taverners Res. 2 (AET)

The final score does the Tavs scant justice because – in a match which just about everything – we came within 35 seconds of what would have been a major upset in normal time and were still in with a chance as extra time drew to an end.

The morning began with a get-together over breakfast at McDonalds and the team spirit which has been evident all season played its part as we battled for everything against a Briarbank team who had beaten us twice – fairly comprehensively – in our league encounters.

We reached half time at 0-0 but upped our game after the break despite facing the fierce wind. Our hearts sank when Briarbank were awarded a penalty but breathed again as the spot-kick went wide.

And then we grabbed the lead: A good build-up saw Carl ‘Topoff’ Henry play Trevor Hollinsworth in and the boss fired into the far corner.

We continued to battle for everything and looked to have weathered the storm when a Briarbank shot from distance caught a deflection and flew past the helpless Alex Smith.

Extra time saw Briarbank take a 3-1 lead but, if they had hopes that the Tavs would lie down, they were mistaken and a foul on Paul Bestley gave Trevor the chance to smash in his second goal from the spot.

We conceded a fourth goal as we pressed forward but, despite the disappointment of ending runners-up, everyone in a Taverners shirt could feel proud of their efforts.

It was unfortunate that a Briarbank player was badly injured late-on but we understand that his injury might not be as bad as was first thought. We extend the club’s best wishes to him and our congratulations to Briarbank on their victory.

Improved performance produces Pilky's 100th goal------------ 04 May 2014

Reserves
Borussia Martlesham 6 - Taverners Reserves 3

Having taken a hammering against Borussia on Wednesday night, it was important for the reserves to show an improvement against the same opposition so that they at least knew they had been in a game.

And we did. With only a few changes, the Tavs showed great determination and good spirit and fought for everything. We had the boost of taking the lead when Paul Strutt’s long ball down the line found Carl ‘Topoff’ Henry and he beat his man comprehensively before cutting inside and firing past the keeper with ease.

Borussia came back to equalise and then went into the lead through an unfortunate slip.

We fell 3-1 behind but fought back well and another great run by Topoff lead to Gary Pilkington bundling in our second goal – and to register his own 100th goal for the club!

Borussia were shaken when we equalised through a Trevor Hollinsworth spot-kick.

However, once again younger legs had the final say as Borussia scored three more goals before the end to finish 6-3 winners.

The big news was, however, Pilky’s century of goals – he is only the ninth Tavs player to reach this milestone – and he was presented with a memento after the match to add to everyone’s congratulations.

First team finish with loss to Champs------------ 30 March 2014

First Team
Taverners 0, Martlesham Old Boys 6

It was a pity that we had to make changes after last week’s morale-boosting win – particularly as we were facing champions Martlesham Old Boys – but it must be said that Paul Ryan did a good job at the back alongside skipper Tom Brooks, while Carl ‘Topoff’ Henry showed his versatility in midfield; in addition, Paul Bestley looked strong when he entered the fray as a substitute.

We began confidently and produced some good attacks but were just unable to find that final ‘killer ball’ which might have set up more than the half-chances which we did create.

Two individual mistakes on our part were severely punished as Martlesham took a two goal lead in at half time but the scoreline did us scant justice for a lively and – as always – a spirited display.

Our determination at the break was dented by a third Martlesham goal straight afterwards and, although again we had good moments going forward, we were forced to defend by a good side who went on to net another three goals before the end.

The match was played in excellent spirit throughout and well refereed by Carl Phillips.

First win for First team, Reserves Rue lack of numbers!------------ 23 March 2014

First Team
Taverners 3, Ipswich Postal Legends 1

Well, it was a long time coming but what a sweet feeling it is to win!

And it was a well-deserved victory for a Taverners team which worked tirelessly throughout with the great enthusiasm and team spirit which has been evident in recent weeks, even when results have gone against us.

We began on the back foot and feared the worst when a 35 yarder flew into our net, via the underside of the bar, giving Matt Davis no chance. Undeterred, we fought back and equalised when Jamie Brittain’s corner was headed in by Daren Stevens. We looked good going forward with Eamon Mongan outstanding in midfield – perhaps his best game in Taverners colours – but also had to defend well with the wind making life difficult when the ball was in the air.

After half-time, we began to press forward and there was a feeling that this could be the day for breaking our league ‘duck!’

A good move sent Eamon away on the right and, from his cross, Tom Brooks saw his first effort blocked but latched onto the rebound to fire home.

Drama was to follow in the closing minutes!

We were forced to defend and an awkward bounce led to a handball decision inside the box. Memories of the Tavs’ last-minute experiences with penalties during the season flooded back but Matt Davis was equal to the task, blocking the spot-kick and then seeing the rebound hit a post before being cleared.

And then the play swept to the other end and Daren Stevens held off two defenders, weaved one way and then the other, before firing a left footed shot which found the net and made the score 3-1.

This was a tremendous team display with everyone playing their part to the full in a well-contested match which was a good advert for Sunday football, well refereed by Sheridan Biss.

The Feathers Res. 4, Taverners Reserves 1

It's hard to say when or what changes a game. Opinions would differ and could be talked about for an eternity. So we will have to argue later because right now it's only my opinion.

Firstly can I say with any certainty that if we had had a full team, we would win this game. 100% yes. Feathers are most definitely the worst team we have played this year.

We started very well. Organised and determined to do well. And it worked. We had the best of play and went ahead when Paul Strutt worked well to set Darren Herridge free for a one on one with the keeper. Darren won easily. With the best of the play we had further opertunities to go 2-0 up but our finishing was not up to scratch.

Unfortunately we were so short that we did not have a linesman. This gave Feathers their equaliser when they tapped the ball home when offside by a yard.

The second half is where you have to say we sealed our own fate. Still no real problem from Feathers. To put it politely "they couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo."

But then for no apparent reason instead of clearing a short pass was intercepted and an easy chance was scored. It totally killed our fight. Add to this that we were struggling with fitness and Feathers had an easy task to take the game and win 4-1. So disappointed and only ourselves to blame.

Mongan quick fire Hat-trick triggers Reserves' win!------------ 23 February 2014

Reserves
Taverners Res. 4, Northam Celtic Res. 0

The Tavs produced a solid performance in perfect conditionas on Sunday, racing into an early two goal lead which put them firmly in the driving seat.

Firstly, Eamon Mongan rescued a ball which had gone beyond the far post and his persistence saw him first to a loose ball to fire home. Then Gary Pilkington produced a fine ball which Bevan Burgess crossed for Eamon to score his second; great bursts of speed from both players to create and convert the chance.

We made the score 3-0 when Trevor Hollinsworth’s neat pass enabled Eamon Mongan to place the ball past the Celtic keeper for his hat-trick – still inside the first 20 minutes of the match!

Club statisticians reveal that Eamon equalled the achievement of Glen Parker who netted a hat-trick in the opening 20 minutes of the Tavs’ 6-2 win over Trimley United in the 1975/76 season at Bourne Park.

Back to the present, and Trevor added a fourth goal when he dispossessed the Celtic keeper well outside his area and coolly slid the ball home.

The second half saw Celtic come back with great spirit but we defended well with Matt Pearson enjoying another good game.

We regained our ascendancy and several chances were missed with Pilky frustrated as he searched for his 100th goal!

A good all-round performance with one superb bit of football seeing Eamon back-heel into Trevor’s path and the boss’s shot being tipped over by the Celtic keeper.

A Game of Two Halves!------------ 9 March 2014

First Team
Taverners 3, Boxford Rovers 6

Despite looking to have a strong line-up, the Tavs got off to a nightmare start, conceding two goals in the opening three minutes!

We fought back and looked lively going forward but, at the other end, Boxford combined well and always looked capable of adding to their lead. Another dreadful period – just before half time – saw three more goals conceded and an embarrasment on the cards.

However, although everyone looked shell-shocked at the break, we produced a fired-up display afterwards and quickly reduced the arrears when Gary Pilkington found space and duly registered his 99th goal for the Club.

Ryan Horsfall then fired in a low cross which was superbly tucked away by Rico Stanojevic at the near post for 2-5. Boxford began to worry when a Jamie Brittain corner was headed in at the near post by Carl ‘Topoff’ Henry to reduce our arrears to 3-5.

Anything seemed possible until Boxford caught us on the break to net a sixth goal.

All credit to the whole Taverners squad for a whole-hearted display in the second half when it would have been do easy to have lay down and ‘died’.

First Team Luckless again!------------ 2 March 2014

First Team
Taverners 1, Clapgate Lane 2

A strong and gusty wind made constructive football difficult for both teams at Greshams but, despite this, a good match ensued.

Clapgate Lane took the lead with a bizarre goal. A through ball seemed to be heading fort Matt Davis as he advanced from goal when a freak gust took it in a different direction and Matt was left helpless as Clapgate found the net.

However, we fought back and equalised. Jamie Brittain – who had a good game – sent in a corner from the left and, although the Clapgate keeper got the final touch, Daren Stevens had been the last Tavs player to touch the ball and the ‘panel’ awarded him the goal.

Unfortunately, Clapgate Lane regained the lead and held on at 2-1 throughout the second half with Taverners rarely able to threaten another equaliser.

Gary Pilkington and Sean High stood out for 90 minutes of hard-work.

Punch just too much!------------ 16 February 2014

Reserves
Suffolk Punch 4, Taverners Res. 2

The reserves put up a decent display against our forthcoming Minor Cup semi-final opponents on a Whitton Sports Centre pitch which played very well after the recent wet weather.

Suffolk Punch took the lead but any hopes that they might have enjoyed an easy morning were dashed by a battling performance which got its reward when Gary Pilkington’s persistence enabled him to bundle the ball past the Punch keeper and find an empty net.

The Punch got on top early in the second half and established a 3-1 lead but, once again, the Tavs fought back and Paul Bestley scored a fine goal, beating the keeper from the edge of the box. This triggered a good spell for Taverners but we missed several chances to level the scores and the Punch had the final say with a fourth goal.

Reserves Rewarded on Soggy Sunday!------------ 26 January 2014

Reserves
Playform Res. 2, Taverners Res. 4

A heavy pitch greeted the two teams and Referee Alan Knock at Farlingaye School but everyone was keen to play and the result was an excellent game of football with the players making light of the conditions.

Playford got off to an ideal start when a corner was only partially cleared and one of their forwards was unmarked, as the ball came back in, to score easily. We shrugged off this set-back and used our experience to produce some good football going forward.

The Tavs equalised when Carl ‘Topoff’ Henry was tripped in the box and Trevor Hollinsworth fired the spot-kick into the corner. We took the lead when a good run by Rico Stanojevic ended with a low cross which was dispatched into the net by Geoff Leeks.

We made the score 3-1 when Trevor Hollinsworth lifted a chip over the Playford keeper’s head from all of 35 yards.

The second half saw Playford press forward but we fought for everything with Paul Bestley dominant in midfield but, although we created a number of chances, we failed to increase our lead. Then, with 20 minutes left, Playford were awarded a penalty which they converted to reduce our advantage to 3-2.

The Tavs continued to battle hard and always looked dangerous on the break and we made sure of the points when Jamie Brittain crossed from a deep position and Carl Henry headed home.

Two games, zero points!------------ 12 January 2014

First Team
Taverners 2, Bourne Vale Rangers 4

The big headline of the morning was written 5 minutes from the end of the match when Gary Cunningham made a ‘cameo’ appearance which registered his 600th game for the Club.

A knee injury ruled Gary out of the starting line-up but he was named as sub. and entered the fray to great applause from players of both sides. Gary was presented with a memento afterwards and stands in fourth position in the Taverners all-time appearance list behind Club Chairman Pat Elvin, Bevan Burgess and Daren Stevens.

We welcomed Carl Medd and Ryan Horsfall to the team – the latter having been so unlucky with injuries throughout the season so far.

On a difficult surface, the Tavs gave as good as they got and were unfortunate to fall behind to a header from a Rangers corner. Chances were few and far between at both ends, our best opportunity coming late in the first half when Daren Stevens was denied by the keeper.

We seemed to be getting on top when we lost possession in an attacking position and Rangers broke away to double their lead. Our opponents then enjoyed a purple patch and added a further two goals to lead 4-0.

The Tavs had fought hard throughout and took the game to Bourne Vale, reducing the arrears through a coolly-taken Daren Stevens penalty kick awarded for handball. We had forced many corners in both halves and, finally, one paid off when Gary Pilkington’s flag-kick was firmly headed home by James Horsfall for a 2-4 final scoreline which did scant justice to our efforts throughout.

New Year, Same Old Story!------------ 05 January 2014

First Team
Martlesham Wanderers 2, Taverners 1

After recent weeks, when our performances have deserved more than two draws, we went into Sunday’s visit to Martlesham Wanderers in confident mood but neither team found the cramped pitch at Gainsborough much to their liking.

Too often, passes were over-hit or just inaccurate and clear-cut chances were few and far between. However, we looked to be getting on top generally and we took the lead when Matty Wray’s persistence rescued a lost cause and, when he fed Tom Brooks, the lively midfielder fired into the far corner.

Half-time came at the wrong time for the Tavs and our lack-lustre display led to Martlesham, equalising. We had our share of the play but rarely looked like troubling the home defence and our fears were realised when Martlesham netted a late winner; they missed a penalty in the few minutes remaining.

Once again, Matt Davis had a fine game in goal, preventing an own goal in the first half and tipping over a goal-bound effort during the second period.

First Team Prove a Point!------------ 16 December 2013

First Team
Real Orford 2, Taverners 2

The Tavs travelled to Orford keen to repeat – or better – the point we gained in the home match against Real and , although Orford enjoyed most of the early play, we played some neat football on the counter-attack.

The ball whizzed across our goalmouth several times but we gained confidence when a good move ended with Daren Stevens sweeping the ball over the keeper and just under the bar. Everyone was battling hard – with the return of Gary Pilkington and Sean High so influential in the heart of our midfield – while James Horsfall inspired everyone around him with a dominating display.

Two weeks ago we lost to a last-minute penalty and we were again involved in spot-kick drama. A penalty award was followed by a great Matt Davis save but the referee was adamant that a Taverners played had encroached into the area and the re-take was duly put away to level the scores.

Facing the slope in the second half, we continued to defend brilliantly and to attack when we could. From one break, a fine Daren Stevens pass sent Matty Wray away and he fired past the advancing keeper. Matty had terrified the Orford defence and he deserved his goal.

Orford equalised again but we showed great resilience to hold onto a point and Matty Wray was unlucky to be flagged offside as he burst through to net again.

Matt Davis deserves full praise for his goalkeeping performance, including a last minute save when all seemed lost.

Club chairman Pat Elvin captured the spirit of the morning by congratulating each Taverners player individually for their efforts afterwards.

It's all about numbers!------------ 8 December 2013

First Team
Taverners 0, Martlesham Wanderers 5

Our line-up might have shown six changes from last week but we felt confident of getting a result against Martlesham Wanderers and were still in the game with a chance up to the final ten minutes when we caved in.

Martlesham pressed forward early on and scored through a headed effort but we fought back and Jamie Brittain had a one-on-one chance while Gary Cunningham was thwarted by a fine tackle as he surged into the box.

A sending off for the visitors seemed to increase their resolve and they made the score 2-0 shortly before the break, cottoning onto a defensive slip and finishing well; both earlier and in the second period, Matt Davis had done well when faced by a one-on-one situation.

The second half saw the Tavs enjoy a good amount of possession but we rarely had the pace, accuracy of passing or guile to open the Wanderers defence up. Daren had a half-chance while Tom Brooks saw his header from a corner fly just over.

As we pressed forward, we were caught on the break and some excellent finishing by Martlesham gave them a final 5-0 scoreline which was somewhat flattering over the 90 minutes.

So the broken record sticks on the same phrase. "Not available, not available"

But then at the game the ultimate put down from a 70 yr old referee. We are losing 9-1 and he says "This is what happens when you have a mature team. "

No that's not true. We aware of our age and our ability. I know only 10 yrs ago we would have taken on these little mongrels from Brairbank with a below strength team and made their young lives hell for 90 minutes. But now the mature players amongst us need to play in position with all those unavailable players. Then we can still cause the opposition a problem. Something has to be done. Too many players have signed on with no intention of playing and no loyalty to the team to put themselves out just a little to be there on a Sunday.

We was robbed!------------ 1 December 2013

First Team
Martlesham Old Boys 2, Taverners 1

Even when you deliberately defer writing a report for 24 hours, the anger over an injustice does not go away!

Having fought – as a team – so bravely for 89 minutes and having scored to seemingly earn a point, it was beyond disappointing to have that reward snatched away by a highly dubious decision. The whistle blew in the midst of a goalmouth scramble and the players walked out of the penalty area, everyone anticipating a free-kick in Taverners’ favour.

No one on the Martlesham side had appealed when it suddenly became obvious that a penalty was being awarded. To make matters worse, the linesman’s flag was aloft for an offside but this was rejected in the same way as our protests at the spot-kick verdict.

Martlesham netted the kick to win 2-1.

Once again, our team was under-strength but over the last three matches – against good opposition; this time top-of-the table – we have shown tremendous determination in all areas, combined with intelligent defending and the ability to play good football on the break. And the spirit within the side has been superb; heartening for everyone.

With James Horsfall’s influence once again dominating, we restricted Martlesham to very few chances in the first half and, when they did score, it took a big deflection to beat the gallant Matt Davis.

Although Martlesham continued to enjoy more of the ball after the break, we had more of the play and several times stretched their defence.

We equalised when Duncan Southgate’s corner was headed in by Carl ‘Topoff’ Henry and we looked to be heading for a deserved point until the penalty award settled the match.

First Team's First Point!------------ 24 November 2013

First Team
Taverners 3, Real Orford 3

This morning’s match was a credit to both teams and to the league, hard-fought throughout with both teams wholly committed but without a bad foul or angry reaction.

We began well but fell behind from a corner very much against the run of play. We were undeterred and forced our way back into the game when a fine move saw Tom Brooks’ shot brilliantly saved only for Carl Medd to follow up and fire home.

Orford were finding it difficult to fathom our system which saw Daren Stevens holding the ball up so well and Craig Parry going on several good runs before, on one of these, he was upended and Tom Brooks netted the penalty.

A great pass from Brooksy gave Carl Medd a chance from an angle and he superbly chipped the keeper for a 3-1 interval lead.

Our first half performance had been based on a defence which was well marshalled by James Horsfall and Andy Cracknell with, behind them, Matt Davis handling the ball so well in goal. Our tackling and willingness to battle-back was typified by another strong performance by Sean High.

Orford drove forward more and more as the second half progressed and they pulled it back to 3-2 midway through the half. We produced some last-ditch tackles and clearances but Orford dominated and grabbed the equaliser in the dying minutes.

The spirit within the side was good, a carry over from the previous week and the fact that the reserves had no match meant that we had the ‘luxury’ of a full compliment of substitutes.

Mixed Fortunes, again!------------ 18 November 2013

First Team
Boxford Rovers 2, Taverners 1

After what has become an all-to familiar hectic 36 hours before the match, a somewhat mature side took the field against Boxford Rovers on a heavy pitch at Nayland; new ground to all of us.

A free header gave Boxford the lead in the opening minutes and things looked bleak. It was mainly Boxford in possession but they found the Tavs determined to fight for everything all over the pitch and our defenders were prepared to tackle, harry and block, with James Horsfall leading by example – winning header after header and reading the game so well.

We began to come into the game as an attacking force but, apart from a few crosses, rarely troubled the home defence.

The second half followed the same pattern with all eleven Taverners players battling for every ball – none more so than Sean High who had a fine match – and the whole side were a credit to themselves and to the club.

Eventually, Boxford scored a second but the Tavs finished strongly and we pulled a well-taken goal back in the last minute – scored by Carl ‘Topoff’ Henry.

First Team
Ipswich Postal Legends 8, Taverners 1

With the team once more showing a number of changes, we took a while to settle down on our visit to Ipswich postal Legends and were fairly quickly two goals down. However, we tried to play football throughout and found a good outlet in the fit-again Craig Parry, who produced a series of good runs and one great shot which the Postals goalkeeper did well to save.

Three down at half time – and conceding a fourth soon afterwards – we continued to attack when we had the opportunity and went close several times. Numbers five and six were conceded before Tom Brooks reduced the arrears. Unfortunately, with the Tavs flagging, postals netted two more near the end.

It has to be said that virtually everything Postals hit went in while we might have scored more than Brooksy’s one. However, it was another difficult morning in what is becoming a hard winter.

Answer a simple question. When you woke this morning, tell me exactly what you did that was worthwhile?

Perhaps you just stayed in bed until the football started on Sky and then you sat there until evening and watched all three games.

Maybe your hangover was so bad that the day was just wasted with your head down a toilet.

Perhaps you had to do some decorating, walk the dog or have dinner with a long lost Auntie. But maybe you just could not be bothered today.

Saturday night Taverners and Taverners reserves had 24 players available. Now that's a result. But as usual by the morning we had just 21 and 4 of them were injured.

The 21 players who turned up had to play against tough opposition under strength because for some reason out of 64 players signed on, 43 were not available. 43!

I looked at the list and I counted 16 long term injured or retired leaving 27 players not available. 27!!

Some of these had very valid reasons but sadly not all 27.

Why should you be available every week. Some have been very honest and have things far more important than football to consider. But sadly again not all of them.

Some of them just had their head down a toilet or just stayed in bed until the football came on the tele and wasted a whole day of their lives.

Because of you the people you call friends had to go out under strength and Taverners 1st team & Reserves lost 17-1 today.

First Team fall whilst Reserves' run continues!------------ 3 November 2013

First Team - Senior Cup
Trimley Red Devils 5, Taverners 1

Various circumstances led to the first team showing nine changes for a tough-looking visit to Trimley Red Devils in the senior Cup.

Tremendous credit is due to all twelve players who took part – everyone was committed, stuck to their individual tasks well and retained the team’s shape. In addition, although we were forced to defend, when a counter-attack was possible, we played some neat football.

The early stages were difficult and we were grateful to Matt Davis for several superb saves. Matt has had to endure some one-sided matches recently but maintains his good humour as well as concentration and great shot-stopping.

Geoff Leeks and Fisky did well in defence while Matty Wray broke dangerously from deep positions so many times and combined well with Carl ‘Topoff’ Henry who held the ball up and used it so well.

Topoff and Matty combined to enabled the latter to open the scoring and we held the lead until just before the break when Trimley drew level.

Trimley took the lead shortly after the break but Matty Wray just failed to equalise after a good ball from Topoff.

We continued to battle for everything but our legs tired as the second half progressed and Trimley added three more goals to progress to the next round.

Team: Davis, Pearson (Mann), Fisk, Leeks, Burgess, Burrows S., Pilkington, Brittain, Strutt. Wray, Henry.

Reserves - Minor Cup
Taverners Res. 6, AFC Claydon 3

If you look at the match facts you could be forgiven for thinking we won because of the misfortune of Claydon. They played the whole second half with 10 men after a serious injury meant one of their players ended up in hospital.

But the truth is that from the very start Taverners went after a half decent Claydon team. By the time of the injury Taverners were already 5-1 up. So we won this game on pure merit.

I can't pick out a player who did not perform well but exceptional work from Eamon Mongan, Sean Creaton, Darren Herridge and Julian Holmes did stand out. Claydon only scored their first goal through the intervention of the referee after he practically tackled Eamon Mongan and the ball fell kindly to set them up for a free shot at goal.

Taverners goals were all well worked. Zico Wright scored twice as did Sean Creaton. Kevin Bolah and Darren Herridge added the other 2. The team has confidence and a very good feel to their game right now. All we have to do is to keep on the same track.

Team: Hollinsworth, Cumberbatch, Holmes, Mongan, Lawrence, Burrows D. (Ha), Creaton, Herridge, Bolah, Tennial, Wright.

Well Done Sam!------------ 30 October 2013

Former Tav Sam Vincent completed the Beachy Head Marathon in five hours and four minutes on Saturday, and so far has raised just of £1,000 for the Woolverstone Wish Appeal. Well done Sam!

3 points for Reserves!------------ 27 October 2013

First Team
Bourne Vale Rangers 6, Taverners 1

Once again fielding a team with several changes, the Tavs were soon on the defensive and we fell behind with only a minute on the clock. Gradually we fought back and, when we did have the opportunity to break out of defence, we played some neat football.

We equalised when Zico wright’s shot caught a deflection and flew over the keeper but Rangers wasted no time in regaining the lead and they held their 2-1 advantage at half time.

Facing a stiff wind in the second half, we were rarely able to do more than defend – at times desperately – and we were grateful to Matt Davis for a fine performance in goal; Rangers scored four more times for a 6-1 final scoreline.

Whatever the result, the big moment was before the match - the presentation to Daren Stevens of a trophy to mark his 600th game for the club – making him number 3 in the Tavs’ all-time appearance records. Daren commented that ‘he’d enjoyed every minute’ and he certainly played with a smile on his face this morning, as usual. A tremendous achievement by a great clubman.

Felixstowe Harpers Res. 2, Taverners Res. 2

With our track record this season so far against the teams leading the league you would be forgiven for thinking this would be a very hard game to win.

We made it very clear before the game that we are capable of beating any team in this league.

Yet again we found ourselves playing on a senior football pitch which is a very nice start to the Sunday morning. But even better than this we went 1-0 up within 10 minutes of the start.

Darren Herridge latched onto a through ball which left him clear of their back four and he beat the keeper at his near post.

We continued to hold our own. All departments playing well. Alex Smith in goal was exceptional and will be missed now that he has taken to traveling the world again.

Debutant Dennis Tennial caused their defence problems and by half time we were still leading.

The second half began with a game affecting bad referee decision. An over hit through ball landed at the feet of Alex Smith. The forward challenged him so Alex side stepped him only to be tripped from behind. With no whistle the forward took the ball and was then fouled. The referee ignoring the foul on Alex awarded a penalty which was converted.

The game remained even until 10 minutes from time when Zico Wright was put through with just the keeper to beat and he scored well.

Harpers pressed for an equaliser and with just minutes to go they got past Daren Stevens who had no option but to take down the player resulting in a red card.

With time almost done Harpers got their equaliser.

Before the game we would have taken a 2-2 draw but the reality was we were disappointed not to take the 3 points.

So Close!------------ 13 October 2013

Reserves
Northern Celtic Res. 4, Taverners Res. 3

We trooped off the field at the end of an exciting and incident-filled match deflated by the fact that we hadn’t obtained at least a point after some good come-backs.

The Tavs began brightly with Dusty Cumberbatch prominent in midfield and Sean High doing well on his return from injury. We produced some neat football but too often ran out of ideas on the edge of the box; on other occasions, some fine crosses just eluded our forwards close to goal.

We had Alex Smith to thank for several good saves but he was helpless in the last minute of the first half when we were caught square and Celtic took the lead.

We had a great boost immediately after the break when Gary Pilkington’s corner was headed in by Geoff Leeks. This should have been a springboard but half-hearted clearances cost us dear as two goals were conceded and we were 3-1 down.

One of our problems was that our midfielders had been unable to support Daren Stevens quickly enough. Daren played his solo-role up front very well, holding the ball up and bringing others into the game. He was also unlucky to hit the post with a deft header.

However we were given a lifeline when a misplaced pass in the Celtic defence gave Pilky the opportunity to whip the ball home. We continued to press and finally drew level when a corner fell loose and Pilky smashed the ball in.

Celtic were always dangerous and they regained the lead at 4-3 but the Tavs were far from finished. A penalty award gave us the chance of a last-gasp equaliser but the luckless Sam Burrows pulled his shot wide.

Team: Smith A., Sherman (Pearson), Cracknell, Leeks, Lawrance (Davis), Burrows S., Cumberpatch, Pilkington, High, Burgess (Burrows J.), Stevens.

Reserves
Brantham 4, Taverners Res. 2

A beautiful sunny morning. Playing on the main pitch of a senior league club. Which by the way was in terrible condition. Applications for a new groundsman are required.

Also required was a referee. Pity we cannot fine the league for not doing their job properly. One of Branthams players stepped forward to do the first half and Trevor Hollinsworth the second half.

So the scene was set for good game of football. Brantham are flying high in the league so we took the precaution of playing 4-5-1.

Within just a few minutes gone we took the lead when Gary Pilkington ran onto a bouncing through ball and with some style lifted the ball high over the oncoming keeper.

We were playing really well with some one touch football only normally seen on the training ground. Eamon Mongan and Dusty Cumberbatch linked up very well in midfield.

But slowly Brantham edged their way into the game and time after time we were beaten for speed on the through ball. Matt Pearson did a great job at full back clearing some of these attacks. Then a five minute spell saw Brantham score twice to take a 2-1 lead at half time.

The second half was an even affair although Brantham did go close on occasions. With a little more pressure they scored to make it 3-1. With time running out on Trev's iphone a through ball set Sam Burrows clear and his pace saw him stay ahead of the chasing defender to slot past the oncoming keeper. Now we had the advantage and pushed for the equaliser. Unfortunately with just seconds to go we were caught on the break and they made the scoreline 4-2 which we did not deserve.

Mixed results in County Cups!------------ 22 September 2013

First Team
Sunday Shield: Taverners 4, Shotley Rose reserves 1

Despite having to make eight changes from our successful Sunday Shield visit to Eastward Ho a fortnight ago, we looked strong in all departments in our second round tie at home to Shotley Rose reserves and quickly settled down; although there were changes, none of the players were strangers to each other!

Matty Wray was a constant threat to the Shotley defence and he was unlucky to hit the bar with a header from a Daren Stevens centre. We then took the lead when a deep cross from Andy ‘Crackers’ Cracknell was firmly headed in by Daren Stevens.

We were grateful for Matt Davis’ alertness when Shotley attacked but a purple patch just before the break put the Tavs in a commanding position.

Firstly, the hardworking Kevin Bolah netted from close range and then a fine move ended with Matty Wray finding Gary Pilkington who blasted the ball high past the goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead.

An own goal midway through the second half sealed Taverners’ win but Shotley fought hard and pulled a goal back near the end.

Referee Jed McManus had a fine match.

Sunday Trophy: Taverners Res. 0, Selkirk Res. 4

It all sounds like excuses to say we were hit again by unavailable players and injuries. But again this is true. We were beaten by a very poor team who without a single doubt in my mind will be soundly thrashed out of this competition in the next round.

With over 11 changes to the 1st and 2nd team from previous weeks you can imagine how disjointed we were. The good news is that we have again signed a few new players. Steve Dusty Cumberbatch played his first game and dealt well with being new to the team.

Our biggest problems lay in the injuries. Trevor Hollinsworth was not due to play through injury but had to play in goal through a late call off but had to come off to be replaced by Matt Pearson in goal. Bevan Burgess was injured after just a few minutes. David Mann also injured.

We got hit very early with their first goal. But after that we did take some control. It was 1-0 at half time. However the second half saw our fitness catch up with us and we made a very bad team look very good. They got their second goal on the hour and after that we never really troubled them. Paul Ryan did score from a headed corner but it was not given by the referee. I do not think this would have changed the result.

Hopefully next week we will have the players available to cover for the injuries we now have.

I have to say I was very disappointed that one player has taken the attitude that he is better than the team and in his words resigned because the players around him are not good enough. Very poor attitude. I remember giving you pitch time when you would not have got into a girls team.

We give every player signed the chance to prove themselves and improve. If you are available every week then maybe you can make a difference and maybe have a voice about how we set up. But to turn up once in a blue moon and complain is simply wrong.

Team: Hollinsworth (Burgess(Holmes)), Sherman, Ryan, Leeks, Lawrance, Skinner, Cumberpatch, Mongan, Mann (Boyles), Herridge, Pearson.

Reserves sucker-punched!------------ 15 September 2013

Reserves
Taverners reserves 1, AFC Claydon 2

With our last-gasp win last week in mind, there was confidence in the camp for a home match against AFC Claydon but we were often at sixes and sevens in the first half and were fortunate when our woodwork was struck several times and the rebounds either fell to the feet of our defenders or were gathered by Matt Davis in goal. Matt had a fine match, including one great save from a wind-assisted shot which saw him tip the ball onto the bar and over with the visitors convinced a goal was inevitable.

At the other end, we had half-chances and then took the lead with a classic bit of play. Trevor Hollinsworth’s neat footwork got him past the full back and his deep cross was headed in by Daren Stevens.

We had the strong wind at our backs in the second half but all too often our through passes were over-hit and we rarely threatened.

However, we seemed to be holding on well with Matt Davis still outstamnding in goal until some poor defending led to a Claydon equaliser and some even worse defensive work gifted them the winner.

Double Bubble Sunday!------------ 8 September 2013

First Team
Felixsowe Athletic 03 1, Taverners 2

The Sunday Shield draw saw us matched against Felixstowe Athletic on a glorious morning at Eastward Ho. We welcomed Clive Halls back in goal together with Craig Parry and Jamie Brittain up front and got off to the best possible start, Tom Brooks firing low into the corner inside a minute’s play.

We played some good football going forward with Carl Medd continuing his good start the previous week but we missed too many chances and still only held the single goal lead at half-time. With the Horsfall/Cracknell partnership allowing Felixstowe few chances, we looked well in control but, then all of a sudden, a shot from the edge of the box found the corner of our net for the equaliser.

There was no panic, however, and Craig Parry was causing Felixstowe problems out on the left. We finally secured the win when Duncan Southgate unleashed a shot from all of 35 yards and this flew over the goalkeeper’s head for 2-1 and passage into the next round.

Sam's Marathon effort!------------ 4 September 2013

MESSAGE FROM DAVE VINCENT

Over the past year many of you will know I have been experiencing the best service and hospitality that the NHS at Ipswich Hospital has had to offer.

I’ve had two operations, six months chemotherapy, and, of course, hospital food.

I have survived it all and on May 2 was discharged from the oncology unit at Ipswich Hospital.

Many friends and colleagues have had experience of the fine care and attention that is there, when you need it, at our local cancer unit.

My eldest son Sam (a former Tav), who is a radiographer in London and lives in Kent, is training to run the Beachy Head Marathon (his first), for the Woolverstone Wish appeal.

The appeal is to raise money to improve the day unit facilities for the staff and the growing number of patients who need chemotherapy and other treatment.

If you can sponsor him, please do so by clicking on here

There are also many other events and fundraising locally in support of the Woolverstone Wish Appeal.

Thank you

David Vincent

Trimley Red Devils 5, Taverners 0

We continued our travels with a visit to Trimley Red Devils at their well-appointed ground with excellent facilities and were pleased to see Graham Hall in charge of the proceedings – Daren, Gary and Graham were team-mates from Fisons days while Graham made a few appearances for the Tavs some years ago.

We were, unfortunately, second best on the day despite sterling work in defence by Andy Cracknell and James Horsfall and the midfield work of Tom Brooks. So often the ball was cleared only to come back to us as we were unable to make any headway upfront.

Trimley scored three goals before the break and two more near the end on a disappointing morning.

Taverners Res 0 Eclipse 6

Today we were just not good enough. We lost 6-0 but even if we had played to the full potential of the players selected we would still have lost.

There were few incidents worth reporting. Marty Smith performed some heroics in goal to keep the score down. Their first two goals were soft giveaways. We did go close on a few occasions and maybe if one of those had gone in then perhaps we may have woken from our slumber.

3-0 at half time. We kept them at bay through the 2nd half. But finally folded in the last ten minutes.

So is that the end ? Do we just accept that we will probably lose every week.

No. We missed players with the heart and the experience to take on a game like this. Three players can hold the heads up and they were Marty Smith, Clive Halls and Sam Burrows. There were others who just had a bad day and their game will improve.

We missed Paul Ryan, Geoff Leeks, Eamon Mongan. But it goes further than that if you look at who is missing from the 1st team as this obviously affects the reserves.

So the answer is no we do not accept it. But we do have to improve. We do need to find the heart and the fight. Next week we take on top of the league Brantham. With the right selection and a bit of heart we can compete with every single team in this league.

Team: Smith, Davis, Holmes, Halls, Burgess, Fisk, Pilkington, Herridge, Burrows J (Ha), Burrows S, Hollinsworth

Season starts with 10 goal thriller------------- 25 August 2013

First Team
Clapgate Lane 6, Taverners 4

We took a while to settle against Clapgate Lane and we were grateful to Matt Davis for some good saves – one followed-up by a brilliant clearance by Tom Brooks.

However, Craig Parry was looking lively up front and when he was pulled back as he broke into the penalty area, a spot-kick was awarded and Tom Brooks fired home. Another foul on Craig a few minutes later brought a second penalty and Tom netted in style for 2-0.

The Tavs made it three when a good ball from Graham Warden was turned in by Jamie Brittain.

Unfortunately, Clapgate Lane pulled a goal back before the break and we were clearly going to have our hands full in the second half

. And so it proved as Clapgate produced attack after attack and two goals brought them level at 3-3. We weren’t finished and a low cross from Craig Parry was netted at the near post by Jamie Brittain to restore our lead at 4-3.

We were unable to cope with some speedy and tricky attacking and Clapgate equalised before scoring twice more to leave the Tavs looking very sorry for themselves.

There were positives: Tom Brooks had a fine game, as did debutant Andy Cracknell; Kevin Bolah worked hard throughout.

Team: Davis, Warden (Sub: J Burrows), Cracknell, Brooks, High (Sub: Ryan), Southgate, Herridge (Sub: Hollinsworth), Bullamore, Bolah, Parry, Brittain.

Season Starts with Six-a-Side!------------- 30 June 2013

The pre-season begins. Sunday saw the start with a team in the Suffolk One Event. Unfortunately the day started as the season finished with a player no show. Luckily Will Lawrence lived locally and agreed to come to our aid.

The team was Duncan Southgate, Graham Warden, Bevan Burgess, Gary Cunningham, Matt Davies, Trevor Hollinsworth and Will Lawrence (Will didn't make it in time for the Chorus line photo below!).

Played on a league basis to start our first two games were not of any note. We were obviously rusty and the opponents fitter. We lost 2-0 to Goals and then 3-0.

We found our feet a little in the third game against Care UK and recorded a good win with goals from Duncan Southgate and Trevor Hollinsworth.

Unfortunately it was a little too late as we were now only competing for a lower placing.

Our first playoff was against Migs FC which we drew 1-1 with a great goal from Duncan Southgate. So in the penalty shot out Duncan stepped up first and his spot kick was saved. They missed their first two. Bevan Burgess scored to put us ahead but Trevor hit the bar to draw the kicks at one each. Matt Davies saved the next sudden death spot kick so it was down to Will Lawrence to put us through and scored scored well.

By the time the game for 7th or 8th came the heat of the day and our fitness had got the better of us and we were beaten easily 2-0. This put us in 8th place out of 12 teams.
