First Team end season with frustrating draw!------------ 3 May 2015

First Team
Taverners 3, Falcons 3

On a soggy morning, we got off to the worst-possible start when Falcons took the lead with a well-taken flick onto a through ball.

We fought back straight away and, when a pushing offence was spotted as a corner came over, Tom Brooks fired in the resulting spot-kick. We then took the lead when the Falcons keeper mishandled the ball and Paul Ryan pounced to score from close range. Club statisticians report that the last time Paul scored for the first team was in 1998!

The Tavs then conceded an untidy equaliser but pressed forward and looked to have scored the winner when Daren Stevens and Paul Bestley combined to give Paul Ryan a half-chance and as the ball skidded across the six yard box Trevor Hollinsworth was on hand to score.

Unfortunately, Falcons weren’t finished and a good move on their part resulted in the ball being diverted in for an equaliser at 3-3.

Action shots, captured by Trevor, can be found here

Bare 11 concede 7!------------ 26 April 2015

First Team
Taverners 1, Elite 405 7

While playing regularly on the artificial pitch at Kesgrave High School might have helped Elite 405 to their win over the Tavs the previous week, we can have no excuses for being on the wrong end of a 7-1 reverse last week.

Unfortunately, we fielded the bare eleven – extraordinary when you consider that there was no reserve match – and were well second best, although we fought hard throughout. Daren Stevens scored the Taverners goal with a header.

Team: Keeble C., Burgess, Jordan, Stevens, Hayward, Tacey, High, Bestley, Siggers, Pilkington, Hollinsworth. Goal: Stevens

First Team fall to five on Faux Field!------------ 19 April 2015

First Team
Elite 405 5, Taverners 0

With what looked a strong side, the Tavs began well against Elite 405 on the 3G pitch at Kesgrave High School, playing some neat football. However, our opponents were well-versed in playing on the artificial surface and their quick-passing game stretched our defence.

We battled well but went behind to a penalty before Elite added two more goals for a commanding half-time lead.

Our second half intentions got off to the worst possible start when Elite netted two more early on. Although this was overall a poor performance by the Tavs, at least we stuck to our task for the rest of the second period and there was no further scoring.

Team: Halls, Southgate (Sub: Spalding), Brooks, Cracknell, Siggers, High (Sub: Hollinsworth), Bestley, Jordan, Stanejovic (Sub: Herridge), Stevens, Brittain.

Blank Sunday!------------ 12 April 2015

First Team
Bucklesham 2, Taverners 0

Last week away to Falcons, we felt that the Tavs looked very promising but a week is a long time in football and we took the field against Bucklesham with a team showing nine changes (several positional).

The wind made life very difficult for everyone but, once again, Bucklesham played some neat, quick football and it took some hard work from everyone to keep them at distance. They eventually scored with a good header from a free-kick but the Tavs were undeterred and at half-time we felt that we were ‘in with a shout’ for a result. As so often happens, a goal was conceded early in the second half but we continued to fight for everything without really threatening in front of goal.

The exceptions were three great headers from Tom Brooks, two of which flew across goal with no one able to provide a touch and the third hit the bar.

Everyone deserves credit for hard work in tricky conditions.

Team: Hayward, Bullamore, Brooks, Cracknell, Spalding (Sub: Strutt), High, Ryan, Jordan, Siggers, Tacey, Pilkington.

Reserves
Taverners Res 0 Felixstowe Harpers 4

The reserves season comes to an end.

2 wins 1 draw and one game awarded to us. It does not make good reading.

It's been a season of frustration. The majority of time we had a good enough team a few days before the game but with constant call offs it was rare we would keep that squad for the game. However if you really look at the cause of our bad season then this was our organisation and fitness. Putting the age of our players aside. There is now excuse for our fitness. It is something we should pay attention to and if it is supported I would like to see more detail in the training sessions.

The last game continued the story of the season. Two costly mistakes led to the first two goals. We worked hard but never seemed to get the better of the 50/50 balls. Harpers were comfortable and we never really troubled them. In the whole 90 mins we only had one effort on goal.

So another season over and hopefully more success next year.

Thanks to all the players who stuck by me and the team.

We still need new players who want to play every week so keep your eyes open

Team: Biss, Fisk, Holmes, Leeks, Burgess, Baldwin(Bloomfield), Herridge, Cunningham, Hart, Hollinsworth, Palmer(Sherman N.).

First Team on a roll!------------ 5 April 2015

First Team
Falcons 2, Taverners 4

The Tavs got off to the best possible start when Daren Stevens headed the ball on and, as Jamie Brittain turned a defender, he was brought down inside the box. Tom Brooks netted the spot-kick with less than a minute on the clock.

We proceeded to play some good football but perhaps overdid things at times and Falcons came back into the game, equalising with a free-kick. A soft goal then put Falcons 2-1 ahead at half time.

We were determined after the break and, once again, scored from the penalty spot very early to equalise. Jamie Brittain was again fouled and Tom Brooks found the net.

The Tavs took control and a superb counter-attack saw Jamie put Liam Siggers away and the raiding full back arrowed his shot past the keeper for his first Taverners goal. We sealed the win when the keeper failed to cope with an effort from Jawa Tacey wide on the right.

This was another sound display by all fourteen Taverners players on duty with, once more, Wayne Jordan catching the eye in midfield.

Team: C Keeble, Spalding, Bullamore, Brooks, Siggers, Tacey, Bestley (Sub: Pilkington), Jordan, Stanojevic (Sub: Palmer), Stevens (Sub: Sneddon), Brittain.

First Team Claw back Draw!------------ 29 March 2015

First Team
Taverners 2, Capel Plough 2

With the Tavs team showing six changes from our last match, it was no wonder that we took a while to settle down and the stiff wind in Capel’s favour in the first half enabled them to drive forward. We were glad to see Tom Brooks and Duncan Southgate in excellent form in the middle of the back four while Wayne Jordan continued to make a big impression in central midfield.

Unfortunately, two rather soft goals put Capel in the driving seat and Callum Keeble did well to keep a third out with a diving save. At the other end, Daren Stevens was ‘flagged’ offside as he headed home while Jawa Tacey had a strong shout for a penalty turned down.

The second half saw the Tavs enjoy the wind advantage and we had the boost of an early goal when a corner wasn’t properly cleared and some neat play led to Darren Herridge laying the ball off and Tom Brooks firing low into the net.

Jawa Tacey was unlucky with a drive from the right which hit the bar; if it had gone in it would have been big contender for ‘goal of the season’ while Tom Brooks’ saw a header hit a team-mate and clear the bar.

Daren Stevens then collected the ball in a deep position and – ignoring encouragement to shoot – continued his run until he finally drove the ball into the far corner for the equaliser. We went close once or twice while Capel had an appeal for a spot-kick denied.

For the second game running, the first team has fought back to grab something from the match – and the reserves did the same in their last outing - which shows the spirit and determination within the Club.

Team: C Keeble, Spalding, Brooks, Southgate, Siggers (Sub: Bloomfield), Tacey, Ryan, Jordan, Hayward, Stevens, Herridge.
Goals: Brooks, Stevens

Great Win for Reserves!------------ 15 March 2015

Reserves
Taverners Res. 2, Playford Res. 1

After a whole season of ending a game with "if only". Taverners finally played like they can.

We have said time and time again that there is not a team in this league that we cannot beat if we play to our strengths. There are many occasions where the team selection has been forced upon us. But today we put out a team freely selected and one which was prepared to commit to their position.

Having played Playford just last week and losing 6-2 we needed to good performance to regain some pride. Last weeks game was everything we have suffered from all season. Defensive errors gave them their first 3 goals and late on our fitness let us down. Our goals came from an inswinging corner which was meet by Paul Ryan who headed home strongly and a penalty converted by Trevor Hollinsworth after Gregg Palmer was fouled. But this week we were different.

The exchanges in the first half were even between both sides. Decent performances from the whole team saw Taverners create a number of opportunities. We looked very solid at the back and in midfield with Paul Ryan and Paul Bestley who coped with any problem Playford threw at them.

However it looked all in vain when a defensive error allowed Playford to score early in the second half. At this point Taverners would normally fold and our fitness would be questioned. But instead we kept pressing. We had the luxury of introducing fresh legs and with just 15 minutes left we did that. Gregg Palmer won us a corner and the resulting near post corner was met perfectly by James Bloomfield to head home for the equaliser and his first goal for Taverners.

Taverners kept pressing but Playford went close a few times hitting the bar and Bradley Hayward pulling off a fine double save to keep us in the game.

With just a few minutes left a through ball left Daren Stevens with a defender to beat in the box. The defender was judged to have fouled as Daren turned him and a penalty was awarded.

A double bluff penalty was needed after scoring the penalty in last weeks defeat.

Trevor Hollinsworth chose to strike the ball to the keepers right instead of left sending him the wrong way to score.

It is a weird feeling spending a Sunday afternoon after winning. Lets hope we can keep this feeling for our remaining 2 games of the season.

Team: Hayward, Burgess(Spalding), Holmes(Baldwin), Leeks, Pilkington(Palmer), Strutt(Bloomfield), Ryan, Bestley, Herridge, Stevens, Hollinsworth.

Goals: Bloomfield, Hollinsworth

Great win for First Team!------------ 8 March 2015

First Team
Taverners 3, Bucklesham 2

We lined up against Bucklesham for the fourth time this season with a much-changed team and the result was an entertaining, hard-fought match with a late winner for the Tavs the ‘icing on the cake!’

Facing a still breeze, we settled into a good pattern and it soon became clear that Ryam Horsfall was going to torment the Bucklesham defence as he surged on a series of breathtaking runs. Some great crosses should have brought goals but chances were missed and then a quick Bucklesham counter-attack brought them the opening goal. A goalkeeping slip then gave Bucklesham the chance to go 2-0 up but our attitude was ‘these things happen’ and we continued to press forward with Jawa Tacey supporting Ryan well on the right hand side.

With the wind at our backs, we gradually got on top in the second half with Wayne Jordan tireless in midfield and, after several more opportunities had been scorned, we equalised via a tremendous run and finish by the outstanding Ryan Horsfall.

We were then awarded a free-kick out on the right and Jawa Tacey hit it left-footed into the top corner.

Our tails were up and some neat play saw Jamie Brittain play Ryan in and he was brought down in the box. Tom Brooks made no mistake from the spot to secure a 3-2 Taverners victory.

This was a fine game – a good advert for the ISFL – with every one on duty for the Tavs playing their part to the full.

Reserves Close to Come-back!------------ 22 February 2015

Reserves
The Feathers Res.4, Taverners Res. 3

Football at it's most frustrating. Within 30 minutes of the start after some dreadful defending we were 3-0 down. At this point we managed to stem the flow and even created some golden opportunities to get back on terms but these were not taken.

By half time it was clear that we needed to change things to make a difference. Unfortunately we went further behind through an own goal. Again we failed to convert real chances into goals so the changes were made.

This increased our tempo and we began to play as we should. Coming back from 4 down is a major task but we started to control the game. Daren Stevens got our first after the ball was cut back in the 18 yard box to leave him to finish with ease. Daren again got the second from a well flighted corner, he made the far post to head home.

Football can often be cruel and with just minutes to go it looked like our come back would not happen but with just 2 minutes left on the clock the ball came off a Feathers defender and in the confusion the keeper let the ball go passed him for our 3rd. We attacked again and again but even though we had chances we were not able to make one count.

There were some incredible positives in the last 30 minutes. Paul Strutt had by far his best game of the season.

It was hard to talk after coming so close to an incredible comeback but the emotion that football gives you is why we play. It can lift you up and drop you straight back down again but we always get back up.

Team: Keeble, Stevens, Holmes, Leeks, Spalding, Strutt, Ryan(Bloomfield), Cunningham, Herridge, Pilkington, Palmer(Hollinsworth).
Goal: Stevens(2)

Two games at last, no-shows as usual!------------ 15 February 2015

First Team
Capel Plough 5, Taverners 3

The first team – with a tight squad – had to endure yet another last minute ‘no show’ which meant Gary Cunningham being drafted in from the reserves and we are grateful to Dave Vincent for driving up to Greshams to get him and, of course, our problem led to Trev having to re-shuffle his pack as well.

We knew that Fisky would be delayed so, if the reseves had been playing in Sizewell or Felixstowe, the first team would have played the first half with 10 men.

As it was, the guys on duty did well – dominating the play for long periods – and only lost when our legs weren’t finally able to cope with Capel’s one outstanding player. We fell behind towards the end of the first half but equalised when Gary Pilkington’s corner was headed in by Rico Stanojevic. Jamie Brittain burst through to give us the lead midway through the second half and, after Capel had equalised, it was Jamie who was on hand to put us 3-2 up with about five minutes left.

Then a free-kick was poorly dealt with to give Capel the equaliser and, with their tails up, they put two more away for a 5-3 win.

No one on the Tavs side deserved criticism; Daren Stevens led the line well while Wayne Jordan made a most impressive debut, and Rico was most unlucky to hit the bar with a thundering effort

Team: C Keeble, Bullamore, Cracknell, Southgate, Cunningham, Stanojevic, Jordan, Bestley, Pilkington, Stevens, Brittain.

Goals: Brittain (2), Stanojevic

Reserves
Taverners Res. 1, The Feathers Res. 4

It just dosen't matter how many times it is said because the management team and all those who turn up every week just do not understand why certain players who profess to want to play but do not make themselves available to play. They call off for the smallest reason.

So just so you know in future here is a list of excuses and what would have happened back when real friends and real men played Sunday morning football.

1. Sorry I got drunk last night

A. You are not something new. We all went out. We all got drunk. And we all went to football every Sunday with the hangover because our mates needed us there.

2. The wife won't let me play.

A. Man up and grow a pair. Did she ask for your permission when she wants something. Probably not. When you start the relationship try this.... "I PLAY FOOTBALL on Sunday morning and I always will."

A real wife or girlfriend will want you to be the person you are.
This could turn into a novel so here's just a few more that we have heard over the past few years.

I didn't get your text - I didn't think I was playing - I'm not coming as sub - I couldn't find my boots - I played Saturday and I'm tired - I didn't have a lift - My alarm didn't go off - I'm going on holiday in a few days and don't want to chance getting injured.

None of these are a good enough reason to let down you team mates.

But the very worst of all is to say nothing and just not turn up. It's like you think you are that good that we should be happy when you turn up. So because of you the first team had to take 4 players from the reserves and we got beaten by a team who would have got nowhere near us if we had the team selected on the Thursday.

There are some positives David Spalding, James Bloomfield are playing well and proving that they are committed to the team. We do still need a goalkeeper but Bradley Hayward has stepped forward to take this role and we are grateful for that. Julian Holmes although injured most of the time is turning in some very decent performances. Paul Ryan is as ever a force to be reckoned with in midfield.

We were the better side in the first half. Ray Sherman hit the post and a Paul Ryan shot from the edge of the box looked a certain goal but was pushed around the post. 0-0 at halftime.

Feathers took the lead early on but Taverners equalised very quickly. A well taken free kick from Paul Strutt was met by the head of Darren Herridge to glance the ball passed the struggling keeper.

Our fitness is very poor and this proved to be our downfall. So if anyone has any suggestions on the fitness subject then text me. I would love to get fitter but hate training alone.

We have the pleasure of playing Feathers again next week when we will have the team selected because those who let us down will not be selected.

Team: Hayward, Sherman, Holmes, Leeks, Spalding, Strutt, Ryan, Bloomfield, Herridge, Hollinsworth, Baldwin(Sherman N.).

Goal: Herridge

Reserves defeated in Mud-Bowl------------ 1 February 2015

Reserves

Felixstowe Harpers Res. 3, Taverners Res. 1

It was a disappointing morning from start to finish really. The weather was seriously cold and the pitch was worse than the Baseball Ground back in the day.

Taverners had a good team selected and so felt confident of a result. The conditions were the worst I have seen for many years but both teams had to deal with it.

Harpers started well and scored early on. Taverners came back at them and had enough chances to score. It was a well hit cross aimed at Gary Pilkington from Daren Stevens which brought us level. Gary's outstretched leg did not connect and this in turn fooled the keeper which gave the goal to Daren Stevens.

We had 2 one on ones before halftime which should have put us in the driving seat.

The conditions got worse and the second half saw Harpers adapt better to the mud scoring twice more.

On the positive side David Spalding is turning in some very credible performances as did Darren Herridge on the day.

Taverners have got to take chances when they come our way. This result would have looked very different.

Reserves Claw Back Draw------------ 25 January 2015

Reserves

Taverners Res. 3, Northam Celtic Res. 3

So it's the start of the second half of the season. We all return to zero and play the teams closest to our form. Without a single point in the first half of the season we cannot help but look forward to playing teams closer to our ability.

On a muddy pitch we started our quest. And all started very well. A Paul Strutt corner curled into the far post was met by the towering figure of Geoff Leeks who headed home powerfully.

The shock of taking the lead for the first time this year obviously spoiled our rhythm and Celtic had the better of the remaining half. They scored twice to take the lead and both were handed to them disappointingly.

After a re group at half time Taverners began to perform better. But against the run of play Celtic scored again. It looked like our season was not going to get any better. Step up Paul Strutt who not only scored our second goal but with just seconds to go he took on the defender to be fouled inside the box for a penalty.

With box penalty takers off the pitch Daren Stevens stepped up to score with confidence.

Our first point of the season. Everything can only get better.

No Christmas Cheer in Cup------------ 14 December 2014

First Team
Taverners 1, Bucklesham 1 (AET) - Bucklesham win on pens. 4-3

We felt that Bucklesham had been flattered by the margin of their victories over the past fortnight and, despite our team showing five changes, the Tavs gave a tremendous performance on a sticky Greshams surface and, with steadier heads in front of goal, might well have edged a win.

The first half saw Bucklesham generally on the attack but we fought for everything all over the pitch, our high level of team-spirit being aided by a willingness from everyone to help each other when necessary and not to carp when mistakes were made. Tom Brooks and Andy Cracknell were immense at the back and behind them goalkeeper Callum Keeble had a superb match.

In breakaways, we created a few chances, our closest efforts being a thundering effort from Gary Pilkington from 40 yards which flew just over the bar and a cross from Marcus Buckley which just eluded Greg Palmer at the far post.

In the previous two games we have struggled after the break but this time the Tavs never let their passion and commitment drop and, with the winds at our backs, we forced Bucklesham back, going close when Greg Palmer fired over after good approach-work from ‘Bully’. Matty Wray had been playing his part throughout with some great runs and tough tackling in the midfield.

The first period of extra time saw Bucklesham grab the lead with a well-flighted effort but Taverners’ never-say-die attitude – even with one or two players bravely keeping going despite being reduced to three-quarter pace through injury – was rewarded when Tom Brooks latched onto a loose ball and fired home the equaliser only minutes from the end of extra time.

We missed out in the penalty shoot-out but everyone of the twelve Tavs players on duty could feel proud of their efforts throughout.

And looking at the ‘bigger picture’ this was a tremendous game and a fine advert for Sunday football, hard-fought on a tricky surface, and well refereed by Tony Midwinter.

Bucklesham, Take-Two!------------ 7 December 2014

First Team

Bucklesham 5, Taverners 2

After the World War One commemorative photo-call, a hard-fought match ensued with one or two hot-spots and plenty of controversy, Bucklesham’s finishing proving decisive in a game with many goalscoring opportunities.

Bucklesham took little time to go ahead and then added a second but the Tavs grabbed the lifeline they needed when Tom Brooks’ header went into the far corner from one of several fine crosses produced by Jawa Tacey. An equaliser followed when Jawa’s deep free-kick from well out on the touchline found the net.

We had missed more than one one-on-one chances and more opportunities went astray after the break. However, Bucklesham also had their chances and Callum Keeble produced several good saves in a brave display.

Unfortunately it was Bucklesham who found their way through on three occasions in the second half.

We look forward to entertaining them at Greshams next Sunday in a Junior Cup tie.

2 Games, 13 Goals, 4 NO SHOWS!!!!!!!------------ 30 November 2014

First Team
Taverners 1, Bucklesham 4

With a few changes - at least one of them a last-minute switch which was forced upon us – it took the Tavs some time to settle down against high-flying Bucklesham but, once we did, we looked the part and played some good football.

We had the misfortune to concede an own goal but Bucklesham had only just finished celebrating when Taverners equalised, Jawa Tacey’s great free-kick being headed in spectacularly by Daren Stevens. We continued to battle away but, as the game moved into the second half, Bucklesham’s (average) younger age enabled them to take control of the match.

Our opponents added three goals in the second half but the Tavs had every reason to consider this a promising performance, with our new signings integrating well. In addition, keeper Callum Keeble did well to shake off an early heavy knock and produced some good saves.

Mud Thumpin' for Reserves!------------ 23 November 2014

Glasswells 9, Taverners Res. 0

Although this was a thrashing, there were some ‘plus-points’ to come out of our visit to a heavy Copdock ground – the addition of one or two new signings meant that we had a healthy squad......the return of Liam Biss to his goalkeeping role.....and, above all, Gary Pilkington registering his 400th game for the Club he joined back in 1996.

Both teams made light of the conditions and the Tavs deserve full credit for still battling away in the dying stages to keep the score below double figures. Geoff Leeks did well while Liam Biss produced one particularly good double save and young Callum Keeble caught the eye with an overhead-kicked clearance!

10 goal thirller!------------ 16 November 2014

First Team

Taverners 5, Cherry Tree FC 5

This might have been a gripping game for the neutrals but it was very frustrating for all connected with Taverners as we failed to hold onto a series of leads in a match which we should have won.

We began well and took the lead after 10 minutes when Daren Stevens broke on the right and his low cross was fired home by Mikey Sneddon. A mistake gave Cherry Tree the chance to equalise but we regained the lead when Daren’s flick-on was coolly latched onto by Jamie Brittain who surged through to beat the advancing keeper. We made the score 3-1 when Jamie shot home from an angle but Cherry Tree again came back to reduce the arrears before half time.

In heavy conditions, we spuerned opportunities to extend our advantage and suddenly Cherry Tree were through to equalise at 3-3.

Daren Stevens forced the ball home from a corner to make the score 4-3 but, once more, we were shocked as an equaliser was conceded.

A fine run and cross by Mikey Sneddon was played on by Daren and Jamie Brittain completed a fine hat-trick from close range.

Cherry Tree never gave up and sent their keeper forward to contest a series of corners; he finally fired in to give the visitors a point in a 5-5 draw.

3 Points for 1st Team------------ 2 November 2014

First Team

Rushmere & Diamonds 0, Taverners 1

The pattern of the play – with the wind a big factor – was similar to a fortnight ago when the two teams met at Greshams but, on this occasion, we managed to hang on to our one goal lead and should really have added to it in both halves.

With it only being possible to name our line-up a few minutes before the match, it was as well that everyone quickly slotted into position and knew each other’s game – experience tells sometimes! We proceeded to put together some neat moves and took the lead through a classic sweeping attack.

Gary Pilkington found Daren Stevens wide on the right and D’s excellent cross was spectacularly headed home by Pilky for 1-0.

The returning Tom Brooks was influential in midfield and he was unlucky with a header from a Duncan Southgate centre.

Rushmere were denied when Matt Davis tipped a shot onto the bar and they took advantage of the wind advantage after half-time to press forward. However, we fought for everything while Andy Cracknell and his fellow-defenders gave nothing away at the back.

Things looked bleak when goalkeeper Matt Davis was injured after playing so well but Daren Stevens took over and we held on for three well-earned points.

The result was an ideal prelude to a sausage & chips celebration of Chairman Pat Elvin’s 60th birthday (the day before) at Greshams and we were grateful to Matt Davis for providing a cake to round off the refreshments. Unfortunately, Matt was at the hospital at the time and, as we go to press, he is at home on crutches waiting to hear the extent of the damage to his knee ligaments.

Team: Davis (Sub: Hollinsworth), Burgess, Cracknell, Leeks, Cunningham, Southgate, Bestley (Sub: Herridge), Brooks, High, Stevens, Pilkington.
Goal: Pilkington

Reserves Ship 5------------ 26 October 2014

Felixstowe Harpers Res. 5, Taverners Reserves 0

Fielding a strong side, we began well against old rivals Harpers reserves with everyone battling hard and we should have built up a good lead before half-time.

Using the wings well, we created a number of reasonable chances but these were missed and we were made to pay later on. In fact, it looked odds-on that Harpers would open the scoring when only a brilliant close-range save from Matt Davis prevented a shot finding our net.

Harpers took the lead after a mazy run by one of their forwards in a counter-attack which caught us out completely.

They scored early in the second half and went on to win 5-0 as the Tavs heads dipped.

Team: Davis, High, Holmes(Strutt), Burgess, Hayward(Bloomfield), Hart, Southgate, Cracknell, Pilkington(Bullamore), Hollinsworth, Herridge(Sherman N.).

A point!------------ 19 October 2014

First Team
Taverners 1, Rushmere & Diamonds 1

Even without a reserves match, it took some very last-minute chasing about to make sure that the Club wasn’t put in an embarrassing position and we were grateful to the guys who made themselves available with minutes to spare before the kick-off of our home game against Rushmere & Diamonds.

We began strongly and Jawa Tacey showed pace to produce several good crosses on his first team debut. A cross from the left brought our goal – Trevor Hollinsworth swinging the ball over and Daren Stevens – who led the line well – headed home at the far post.

We went close once or twice more but gradually R&D came into the game and, when they equalised just after half-time, they looked in a strong position with the wind at their backs.

It was now that all the Tavs showed great character and commitment particularly when the ball bobbing about just outside and inside our box. ‘Crackers’ and Bevan Burgess both did well at the heart of our defence while Matt Davis’ handling and anticipation was superb in goal as Taverners gained a point with no further scoring.

But it’s unfair to pick out individuals. This was a performance of great grit and determination from everyone in a Taverners shirt.

Team: Davis; Fisk (Sub: Hayward), Cracknell, Burgess, Cunningham, Tacey, Bestley, High, Pilkington; Stevens, Hollinsworth (Sub: Keeble)
Goal: Stevens

No points, No goals------------ 12 October 2014

First Team
Trinity 5, Taverners 0

The final scoreline doesn’t do the Tavs justice because we started brightly and the amount of possession we enjoyed should have been reflected in goals. However, we were caught out twice to give Trinity a 2-0 lead and our only real responses were headers from Gary Pilkington which were off-target.

A third Trinity goal clinched them the points and two more near then gave the impression of a one-sided match which wasn’t the case; we made far too few opportunities, however, on a disappointing morning.

Team: Davis; Fisk, Southgate, Leeks, Cunningham; Bestley, Cracknell; Stanojevic (Sub: Lawrence), Sneddon, High; Pilkington.

It's a question of numbers------------ 5 October 2014

First Team
Kesgrave United 4, Taverners 1

The result of this well-contested match hinged on a period of 15 minutes or so immediately before the break when Kesgrave hit a purple patch and scored four times.

For the first half hour the Tavs had enjoyed the better of the play and some positive defending meant that Matt Davis was hardly troubled. We played some good football going forward but, unfortunately, could not make many chances around the home penalty area. We took the lead when Jamie Brittain’s pass was cleverly flicked past the goalkeeper by Rico Stanojevic.

Suddenly, Kesgrave grabbed an equaliser from a free-kick after an hour’s play and, with Ryan Horsfall – nursing a possible broken nose from Saturday – off the field injured, they netted two more. A fourth followed just before the break. We replied with a shot from Daren Stevens which hit the top of the bar.

The second half saw Taverners battle hard but, although we prevented Kesgrave scoring again, we made hardly any opportunities ourselves. Matt Davis distinguished himself with one flying save and later saved a twice-taken spot-kick.

Team: Davis, Fisk, Cracknell, Southgate, Cunningham; Strutt, Bestley; Stanojevic, R Horsfall, Brittain; Stevens.

Goal: Stanojevic

Reserves
Taverners Res 0, Gladwells 10

The curse of the first 45 minutes struck again. No matter what we try it seems we are just not organised or ready for the first half. We can moan and complain about injuries and unavailable players but the truth is we are in this situation where some players are just not committed enough to the club or the game.

We are not alone. I was talking with the league chairman and he tells me that no less than 6 SIL games have been cancelled this season due to the clubs not having enough players to complete the fixture.

So when you look at the situation then you just have to accept that the game we once knew and loved is not the same anymore.

From commitment to the quality of players. We sign on new players every year in the hope that they will commit to Taverners as we "the few" do every week. We signed 3 new players this week. The first to register and play this week is Callum Keeble and we hope his enthusiasm will maintain through the season.

We "The Few" really do enjoy playing every week. Even this game I can honestly say I would be there every week even if it meant losing by 10 goals. From each game you take the positives. We were losing 9-0 by half time. They were literally walking round some very unfit players. At half time we re-organised and the free scoring stopped.

The second half was very enjoyable. It's true we only managed two shots on goal in the whole game. Darren Herridge forced a save from their keeper and Trevor Hollinsworth hit the bar with a long range shot. But the second half saw some very good perfomances especially from Bevan Burgess, Julian Holmes, James Pinder and Ray Sherman.

We do need all our squad fit and available but fit or not we will be out there again next week. I really hope you "the squad" will join us "the few".

Team: Keeble, Hayward, Holmes, Pinder, Lawrence, Bloomfield, Hollinsworth, Sherman R., Burgess, Herridge, Sherman N..

Cup Runneth Over------------ 28 September 2014

First Team
Taverners 1, Westbourne Warriors 9

Having to field more than one player who was less than 100% fit and then seeing others struggling, meant that we were always on the back foot against Westbourne Warriors.

With only 22 players available for both our teams, we had no flexibility or options at all and all credit to everyone on duty – we did our best in difficult circumstances and we hope this is just a ‘blip’ in what had been a good start to the season.

Tom Brooks was injury-stricken after 20 minutes and he switched into goal – giving a fine account of himself throughout with several fine saves. The change gave Matt Davis a rare – these days – outing on the pitch and he provided the pass from which Craig Parry pounced to score our consolation goal. ‘Bully’ had to leave the fray at half time and we played the second half with ten men.

It was good to see Gary Pilkington on the touchline and we hope that he gets the go-ahead to play in the very near future.

First Team's winning Run Continues------------ 21 September 2014

Cherry Tree 0, Taverners 6

Despite making seven team changes from last week, we had a strong-looking side on display and soon found our rhythm on an excellent surface at Whitton Sports Centre.

Moving the ball quickly, the Tavs got on top but were unable to make many chances apart from some long range efforts. One of these saw Jamie Brittain hit the bar but Jamie was not to be denied for long as he cut in from the left to curl his shot past the keeper and inside the far post.

The second half began in the same pattern but we made the score 2-0 when Darren Herridge was brought down in the box and Tom Brooks fired into the corner from the spot. The Tavs went three up when Darren Herridge reacted quickly to score in the corner.

The lively Andy ‘Crackers’ Crackers produced a fine cross which was turned in by a defender for 4-0 and then Rico Stanojevic unselfishly squared the ball from a dangerous position and Tom Brooks scored from close range. ‘Brooksy’ registered his hat-trick from a deep cross from Trevor Hollinsworth to round things off at 6-0.

A very competent performance in which everyone played their part; and a well-deserved clean sheet.

Team: Davis; Bullamore (Sub: Hollinsworth), Leeks, Southgate, Cunningham; Bestley, Cracknell; Stanojevic, Brooks, Brittain; Herridge.

Goals: Brittain, Brooks(3), Herridge, OG.

County Cup success for First team whilst Spud smashes one in for Reserves------------ 14 September 2014

Lattice Barn 1, Taverners 3

A bumpy pitch and the usual Gainsborough cross-wind resulted in a scrappy Sunday Shield tie on Sunday with the Tavs rarely able to repeat the good football we produced in our opening match.

However, we got on top and stretched the Lattice Barn defence, taking the lead when a deep free-kick from Jamie Brittain was firmly headed home by Rico Stanojevic. We made the score 2-0 when Ryan Horsfall broke through and rounded the keeper before scoring.

We then had a period where some arguing with the referee – combined with the assumption that 2-0 would be enough – saw us lose our concentration and Lattice Bark pulled a goal back just before half time.

In the second half we gradually took control with Duncan Southgate and Andy ‘Crackers’ Cracknell well in charge while Ryan Horsfall enjoyed some fine runs out on the right. We missed several good chances before Carl ‘Topoff’ Henry was clipped from behind in the penalty area and Mikey Sneddon fired home the spot-kick to round off a 3-1 win.

Skipper Gary Cunningham became the first Tav ‘roll-on-roll-off’ substitute, returning to the fray for the injured Rico, having earlier left the field for treatment.

Team: Davis, Parry, Cracknell, Southgate, Cunningham (Sub: Fisk), Brittain, Pilkington, R Horsfall, Sneddon, Stanojevic, Henry Goals: Stanojevic, Horsfall R., Sneddon

Taverners Res. 2, Shortley Rose Res. 5

There are a two subjects which come up again and again during our match reports. The availability of players and we always seem to do better in the second half. Well here's a surprise. Both of these things were part of our game on Sunday against Shotley.

With both 1st team and reserves playing this week we always knew we were up against it to field two quality teams. Injuries, family events and work are 99.9% the reasons for being short. We were missing a goalkeeper, three midfielders and a centre forward. So there is no doubt that this result would have been very different if we had the luxury of a full squad. Added to this was that we had to play players out of position, none more so than Trevor Hollinsworth in goal.

So the game started badly with an early goal for Shotley after an under hit goal kick landed on the feet of pretty much the only decent player Shotley had. Luke Catchpole. The problem was that he was very good and he strolled through Taverners defence to score easily. But we held things together and were rewarded with a very well worked goal. Matt Wray picked up the ball half way and found Darren Herridge who in turn found Nathan Sherman who beat one defender to score his first ever Taverners goal.

We actually had the chance to go ahead. Darren Herridge hit wide when clean through and did it again a few minutes later hitting the post. Matt Wray also had a good chance go wide.

Unfortunately another bad goal kick saw Shotley's Catchpole pick up the ball to again stroll through to score. Shotley scored twice more before half time.

The second half was a different story. Geoff Leeks, Paul Bestley and Matt Wray played very well to drive us all forward. We were undone again when Luke Catchpole again walked through to score his 4th of the day. The rest of the half was contained and all Shotley's efforts were dealt with by our defence and even on a few occasions by the cat like reactions of Trevor in goal. We scored again through Darren Herridge when he broke free to chip to on coming keeper from 20 yards.

Team: Hollinsworth, Holmes(Hayward), Leeks, Pinder, Burgess, Hunt, Bestley, Wray, Bloomfield, Sherman N.(Biss), Herridge. Goals: Herridge, Sherman N. .

Defeat for Reserves in season opener!------------ 7 September 2014

Taverners Res. 1, Felix. Harper Res. 3

The start of a new season never fails to fill me with optimism. Looking for the positive points of this game and you have to say we definitely created enough chances to win the game. On the negative side it was our fitness that once again failed us. But it was the first game of the season and if we get a little more match fit then maybe the missed chances will go in.

Taverners started well and Harpers did not really cause too much concern until against the run of play they scored. Taverners were then forced into early changes due to injury and this again caused some confusion which led to another goal for Harpers. The first half saw us with a number of chances to score but with some bad finishing and bad luck we got to half time 0-2 down I believe this was a direct result of not being match sharp and match fit.

To steady the ship we changed to a 4-5-1. Daren Stevens had done some excellent work up front but had to be moved to central defence to assist Duncan Southgate in holding everything together and stopping some silly mistakes.

This worked well and although Harpers caused problems they were dealt with. Taverners created chance after chance. Pulling the score back to 1-2 through a penalty converted by Trevor Hollinsworth it looked like we would go on to draw level if not win. We had what can only be described as certain goals missed from players who would normally put them away with their eyes closed. Sometimes you just have to put your foot through the ball.

Harpers got a penalty which all but sealed their win as Taverners fitness levels began to show.

It has to be said we were also a few players short due to late call offs. This is something we have to stop.

Team: Davis, Warner, Bullamore(Lawrence), Southgate, Hayward, Stevens, High, Strutt, Bestley, Pilkington, Hollinsworth
Goals: Hollinsworth.

First Team start with a victory!------------ 31 August 2014

Taverners 4, Trinity 2

We began the season with a lively and hard-working display at home to Trinity, taking the game to the opposition from the start.

More than one chance went astray before we opened the scoring when Carl ‘Topoff’ Henry went clear on the right and crossed low for Michael Sneddon to coolly fire home.

With Tom Brooks and Andy Cracknell dominating at the back, we continued on top and, after we had missed more opportunities, we scored a second. Craig Parry, who settled in well at right back, played the ball forward and Topoff drew the keeper before hitting the ball past him.

The early stages of the second half saw more Taverners chances created and wasted and we feared that we might pay for them when a superb header brought Trinity back into the game.

The Tavs regained the initiative and we were somewhat relieved when Duncan Southgate found the corner of the net for 3-1. Topoff – who was outstanding throughout – then thumped home free-kick before Trinity pulled another goal back late on.

This was a solid performance with no weak links and it should give everyone much confidence.

Team: Davis, Parry, Brooks, Cracknell, Cunningham, Southgate, Pilkington (Sub: Hollinsworth), Stanojevic, Sneddon, Brittain, Henry
Goals: Sneddon, Henry(2), Southgate.
