Reserves Rally To Subdue Celtic!......11/03/2020

Reserves - Division 4

Northam Celtic 2, Taverners Reserves 3

After such a long lay off it was expected that we would be a bit rusty. With the majority of our players available we also knew we had one of our best teams out there to cope with whatever Celtic threw our way. The reality was so much different.

We did not adapt well to the game. In the debrief we have discussed whether the formation of 4-3-1-2 was correct. But really the biggest problem was that too many players had been affected by no game in four weeks. We never won the second ball. Our distribution was at times diabolical.

Celtic took the lead from a cross which was blown into the far post. Conditions were not the best but we started to battle our way into the game. We equalised after a shot into the front post was not dealt with and Ashley Wootten was on hand to score. We then lost Andy Lambert to injury which meant changing the way we were lining up.

We knew the wind was slightly in our for the second half. This however did not seem to matter as Celtic again took the lead. It is so disappointing that after so many years our weakest point is always from our own attack breaking down. The Celtic player who scored headed the ball out of his own 18 yard box and went through unopposed when he received the ball again in our half. We have to put this right.

With time getting short we were not making any real in roads. It always takes a moment of magic to change your fortunes and this came when Josh McLaughlin picked up the ball 35 yards out. He made room for himself as he got to the 18 yard box and hit a stunning shot into the top of the net.

We were now causing a few problems but the winning goal did not come until 5 minutes from time. Josh McLaughlin got possession in the 18 yard box after Celtic failed to clear a corner. By his own admission his resulting shot was not the most explosive one he will ever hit but it was accurate and it rolled into the far corner of the goal.

It is an important win but we have to improve for our next game.

Team: Davis, McLaughlin, Burrup, Southgate, Pilkington(Cunningham), Strutt(Risby), Lambert A.(Burgess), Monaghan, Lambert Ja., Wootton(Hollinsworth), Stevens D.

First Team Fail To Find Net Against Fat Cat!......23/02/2020

First Team - Division 1

Taverners 0, Fat Cat 1

Our home match against league leaders Fat Cat turned out to be a tremendous tussle with some good football from both teams.

One or two early efforts from Fat Cat whizzed across our goal while, at the other end, Lee Riley wasn’t quite able to connect at the far post from a deep ball from Mikey Sneddon.

Fat Cat put some pressure on and Brandon Burton saved well while Markeese Hudnell kicked another effort off the line. We were battling hard all over the pitch and it was all-square at 0-0 at the break.

Unfortunately, we ‘switched off’ from a corner early in the second half and a Fat Cat header found the corner of the net. We had a good closing spell with several free kicks and corners but we were unable to find an equaliser and Fat Cat held on.

For Taverners, no one played badly, we just couldn’t work enough scoring opportunities in a hard-fought encounter. There was general agreement that Zack Archer enjoyed his best match in Tavs’ colours.

Team: Burton, Durrell, Brooks, Archer, McLaughlin, Tacey, Pasque(Wootton), Jordan, Hudnell, Riley, Sneddon.

The importance of this game lost its edge after losing last week but we still want to finish the season strong. Looking long term we need to learn as much as we can to do even better next season.

Enforced changes losing Grant. Daren and Sticks. But it gave us the chance to give others the opportunity to play. We were playing well and containing Elite.

The game turned against us with a problem we have had for some years so it was the same old story as an attack broke down and they scored from the counter attack.

Their second goal was a carbon copy of the first.

We were still creating chances and playing fairly well but we went further behind and the game looked lost at 3-0. Elite obviously set major importance on this game which was evident in the over the top celebrations.

We needed a bit of luck to go our way and this came when we were awarded a penalty. Paul Strutt took the kick and scored confidently.

This did rock Elite and they began to panic as we attacked again and again. We scored again when Jack Lambert easily beat the keeper to a loose ball in the 6 yard box and he chipped the ball over him to score.

The comeback looked complete after more good work in the final third found Josh McLaughlin at the far post to fire home on his birthday. We looked like the only team that could win this game now. Although Elite tried to press we were just about dealing with everything they had.

We were however looking tired and this proved our undoing as we failed to stop a solo run and they scored. Totally deflated our game collapsed and Elite added another goal before the end of the game.

We are a squad of players and everyone is part of this team. It was amazing watching our comeback and how everyone reacted to the game turning our way.

We still have things to learn. We need to be able to close games like this out. Most of you will not know this name but we need a Paul Ryan to see a game like this all the way to the final whistle.

Team: Davis, Pearson J., Lambert A., Southgate, Pearce, McLaughlin, Pilkington(Burgess), Fisk., Strutt., Lambert Ja., Hollinsworth(Wootton)

It was suggested that I should write the report straight after the game when all the emotion and adrenalin is still in the system.

Ok. So my immediate thoughts are that we got it wrong in the first half. We knew they were a decent side and we knew they were confident.

We had three clean and clear chances in the first half to affect their heads and put them onto the back foot. But we did not take them. We nneded an old fashioned poacher; someone who expects the ball to come to him; someone who isn't scared to put his laces through the ball.

The game is not reflected in the score. 2-1 would be a decent description of the game.

Their first goal was a free kick which we all knew the guy would hit. His shot was wide and totally covered until it hit one of their players on the side of the head which deflected the ball. He had no idea what he was doing.

We got back into the game in the second half through Andy Lambert with a low shot the the keepers right. We hoped this would be the turning point but it was not.

Their second came from a half cleared free kick and they scored from an acute angle. It was the only goal they actually deserved.

We were just not on our game now. We lost Daren Stevens through injury and that left us with no outlet. We have to address that problem. We need another striker.

They scored two more goals which should and would never have happened normally. Both mistakes and caused by the fact that our heads were down and we knew this game was lost.

Pythons took this game on in a better way than us. We could have done so much better. They deserved the win.

Too many players just did not play their normal game. As a team we did not create anything. It was simply a bad day.

Is the season over ? No of coarse not we still have 9 games to enjoy. But the final result is not any longer in our own hands.

Here's the maths:

Elite must lose 3 times. They play us twice and Pythons once.

Pythons must lose twice. They play Elite and Feathers.

Feathers must lose 3 times. They play us and Pythons.

So maybe a glory season is not on the cards this year but we have made big steps forward this season.

There is still a lot of football to go and as one of the worlds best ever poachers Jimmy Greaves used to say. "FOOTBALL IS A FUNNY OLD GAME!"

Team: Hollinsworth, Pearson J., Risby, Burrup, Burgess(Southgate), McLaughlin(Fisk), Pilkington, Lambert A., Strutt., Lambert Ja., Stevens D.(Herridge)
Goal: Lambert A.

Reserves Roll-On Taking 3 Points From Panthers!......19/01/2020

Reserves - Division 4

Taverners Res. 4, Hintlesham Panthers 2

With every success there is a sacrifice. The biggest question I have to battle with every week is.

Am I fielding the best 11 that I can. Am I being led by my head or my heart.

I have played for Taverners since the early 1990's. Many of our players I have played football with for well over 20 years. These are my friends.

At some point we all have to come to the realisation that we cannot do everything we could a few years ago. I have first hand experience of this.

But everyone must accept that we are all part of the success we are having this year. I want all of our squad to feel and be part of the success.

We won well on Sunday but we were not at our best. Crosses were not going in cleanly. Shots were not as accurate or hit with the same venom.

We had a squad of 16 and I want everyone to play a part in the game. But sometimes trying to use all those players changes our shape too much.

Our next two games will be a massive challenge against Pythons and Elite.

I am going to have to be very careful about bringing players on.

We have to win every game and if that means a sacrifice then we should all be prepared to accept that.

We have 10 games left. We will play Elite twice, Pythons and Feathers once each.

It will not be easy but it will be worth any sacrifice any of us have to make personally to make sure we have the best chance of getting the right result.

Being a Taverners manager is so much easier when we are not doing as well.

We did well in the first half playing some good football and were rewarded with three goals.

The first was headed down by Gary Pilkington for Jack Lambert to fire home from the edge of the 18 yard box.

The second saw Gary Pilkington latch onto the ball after some good work from Paul Strutt and Jack Lambert. Gary placed his shot on the turn into the far side of the goal.

The third and best goal started with Josh McLaughlin making ground on the right which he did throughout the game. His cross to the far post was met by Daren Stevens to head strongly home.

A goal which saw Daren overtake Pat Elvin to go third all time goalscorer at Taverners.

We did go through a 15 minute spell in the first half where we let Hintlesham back into the game and they scored from a direct free kick.

However I blame myself for that as I should have organised the wall better and should have put another player on the far post.

The second half saw Hintlesham push forward and they caused some problems although all were dealt with confidently.

We went further ahead with another goal from Daren Stevens and looked set to run out 4-1 winners but Hintlesham did continue to press.

After a mix up in defence the ball was only half cleared, the resulting shot looked covered until it deflected off a player and looped over my head.

The game was essentially over as we protected our lead.

We are still in command of our own fate. The next two weeks will go a long way to deciding how well we do!

Team: Hollinsworth, Pearce, Burrup, Southgate(Risby), Burgess, McLaughlin, Lambert Ja., Lambert A., Pilkington G.(Wootton), Stevens D.(Stevens E.), Strutt(Herridge).

Reserves - Division 4

Rosary CC Res. 0, Taverners Res. 4

This game was a pleasure to watch from my 18 yard box. A performance totally different from our last game. Players have stepped up their individual games. Some are playing better than I have seen them in years. You can put this down to many reasons. They are enjoying a new freedom. Enjoying playing alongside like minded players. They are all playing as a team. The chemistry and the make up of the team is more important than just one players skill and ability. None of that matters if they cannot play as part of this team. Availability does and will always affect our performance. The good thing is that most players in and around our squad can step into a position and know what they have to do. Are we perfect ? Good lord no.

On occasions our distribution is dreadful and has to improve. We still have the problem of not maintaining our momentum. We go through short spells where a good team could take advantage.

A number of players are not 90 minutes fit. If you do not know who you are then you should and you need to address it.

We opened the scoring when Gary Pilkington was put through leaving him with a one on one with the keeper which he finished with some skill. Again we dropped off for a few minutes. We still pressed but not with the same momentum. We gained everything back when a cross from Paul Strutt to the back post beat the keeper for our second goal. This spurred us on and we were in total control. The best goal of the game came when Josh Mclaughlin made ground on the wide right. His inch perfect cross was met by Daren Stevens at the far post to head home.

The second half was under control. Rosary did create a few half chances but our midfield and defence were as solid as a rock. Daren Stevens added our fourth midway through the second half.

Our season is still in our hands. Our own performance will decide where we finish. We still have to play all the top sides. We need to not slip up against sides like Rosary and Pheonix.

Our performance on Sunday was the best this season for a lot of players. We have to maintain that and no matter who takes the field against us from now until the end of the season we play just like this

Team: Hollinsworth, Pearson J., Pearce(Cunningham), Burrup, Burgess, McLaughlin(Wootton), Monaghan, Lambert A., Pilkington G., Stevens D.(Stevens E.), Strutt(Herridge)..

Pointless Christmas!......15/12/2019

First Team - Division 1

Taverners 3, Playford 5

A crazy ten minutes cost the Tavs dear as we ended the year with a disappointing result against Playford after enjoying a good first half.

We took the lead when a good long ball from Josh McLaughlin – who slotted in well at right back – saw Lee Riley in to lob the Playford goalkeeper in style. We were guilty of poor marking as Playford equalised but restored our lead when another effective pass from Josh enabled Markeese Hudnell to run through and score.

The next goal was clearly going to be vital and we had three efforts early in the second half when Mikey Sneddon twice narrowly missed the far post and Dan Pasque saw his shot go wide after a fine run.

As so often happens, a team which has missed chances is made to pay and Playford quickly equalised following a corner and then added three more goals in fairly quick succession as we struggled to cope with their pace and determination to get round the back of our defence.

The Tavs kept going and had most of the possession, pulling one goal back through a shot into the corner from Mikey Sneddon.

It was good to see Rico Stanojevic back in action after a long injury lay-off.

Team: Burton, McLaughlin, Brooks, Archer, Tacey, Boosey, Pasque, Jordan, Hudnell(Stanojevic), Riley, Sneddon.
Goals: Hudnell, Riley, Sneddon.

Reserves - Division 4

Taverners Res. 1, Phoenix 2

I like to call this a ‘Glass Half-Full’* type of report!

Again, unavailabilities and last minute call-offs affected our ability to field our strongest side. However, a still strong and capable team began the game with Phoenix by trying to play the football that has seen us gain more points before the Christmas break than for many a year.

It was therefore disappointing when Phoenix opened the scoring following a quick break, and neat finish, past stand in ‘keep Andy Lambert. This spurred us into action and we created a few chances to level before the break, including a classic Daren Stevens’ mazy run through the defence, but none were taken.

We started the 2nd half a lot better than we have in previous matches and pushed forward for an equaliser. Unfortunately, it looked like it was going to be ‘one of those days’ in front of goal as our shooting boots were on the wrong feet, the Phoenix ‘keeper was having the game of his life and we were having no luck with deflections.

Phoenix’s 2nd goal again came from a breakdown in our play, breaking down the right and eventually putting the ball in the net after an initial chance had been cleared off the line.

This forced our hand with the one substitution we had available. Daren Warner came on to go in goal and Andy Lambert moved into his usual midfield position which had an immediate impact as Andy pulled a goal back for us by poking home after a goal mouth scramble.

Despite us having the majority of the final 15 minutes’ possession, we failed to convert our chances and went down to only our 2 league defeat of the season.

On another day we could have won 6-2, but this wasn’t another day.

Yes, we must improve all round if we want to challenge for promotion or even the title, but let’s not forget the magnificent start we have had to this season in the league: Played 10, won 7, drawn 1, lost 2, +10 goal difference and 22 points!

That’s all down to the strength in depth that our squad has this year. As a result of this, difficult decisions have been and will still need to be made by the management for the benefit of the team. We ask that you support these decisions and enjoy the magical mystery tour that is the Taverners Reserves 2019/20 Season.

Have a great Christmas! Eat, drink and be merry, but look after your personal fitness as in the New Year we strive on for even greater results!

First Team Let Lead Slip Late At Leiston. Reserves Roll on!......08/12/2019

First Team - Division 1

Leiston Orient 2, Taverners 2

For the second week running, the Tavs were involved in a thrilling and high-quality match with a twist in the tail. However, whereas we had grabbed a last-gasp equaliser against Laxfield United, on Sunday we were left deflated as we conceded a levelling goal against the Orient in the dying moments.

Leiston had the wind in their favour in the first half and, although we defended well, they took the lead after fifteen minutes with a well struck shot from some distance.

Our battling spirit all over the pitch kept the scoreline to 1-0 until the break and we came out afterwards confident of getting back into the game. We went close several times before a good build-up saw Lee Riley play Dan Pasque in and he fired a low shot past the keeper. We then went ahead when Mikey Sneddon made some space for himself and produced a great shot into the corner.

More chances followed. The Orient keeper saved well from Lee Riley and Markeese Hudnell and other opportunities went astray. At the other end, Leiston hit a post and Wayne Jordan cleared off the line.

Our excellent play should have ensured victory but we paid for missed opportunities when Leiston broke through for their late equaliser.

Even then we had a final chance, Tom Brooks seeing his header well saved.

Despite the two points slipping away, this was a fine Taverners performance in which everyone played their part.

Team: Burton, Goddard(Durrell), Brooks, Archer, Tacey, Boosey(Spalding), Pasque, Jordan, Hudnell, Riley, Sneddon.
Goals: Pasque, Sneddon.

Reserves - Division 4

Taverners Res. 4, Wickham Wanderers 3

Despite last minute changes due to illness and traffic problems, the reserves started the game well against Wickham Wanderers, determined to put last week’s heavy Cup defeat against Hardy’s behind them. Their cause was helped when a Wickham player received two Sin-Bin cautions in the space of 30 seconds for descent. For those of you that haven’t completed the online Sin-Bin training course it meant that he could no longer play any part in the game, but he could be substituted after the Sin-bin time of 20 minutes was complete.

The Reserves made the most of this numerical advantage by racing into a 3-0 lead. The first from a typical Daren Steven’s header; the second from a Darren Herridge shot following another typical Daren Steven’s header; the third was a blast from Strutty from what seemed like an impossible angle.

The first half was full of all the positives we have seen so far this season, everybody working for each other, timely tackles being made and sensible simple short passing routines creating chances. Matt Davis pulled off saves when need, although Wickham’s chances were limited by the defence; Josh, the raiding right back, troubled the left-back for Wickham; Craig and Fisky at centre backs shut down the attacks when required and Bevan provided an outlet on the left and linked up well with Grant who was causing problems for their right back . Gary stood firm in the middle of midfield and allowed Strutty, Darren Herridge and Pilky to support Daren Stevens when he inevitably one the ball in the air.

At half-time, and in a familiar 3-0 lead, we spoke about not being complacent and not letting the lead slip. We did start the second half better than in the past few weeks. However, we did concede a goal from a corner that knocked our confidence, and which quickly lead to a second for Wickham.

Fortunately, we pulled ourselves back together in time this week and stopped the rot. The pressure was relieved for a short while when Bevan, using the telepathic understanding developed over the many years of training and matches with Pilky, played an inch perfect ball into the area which Pilky slotted home (off the post) to make it 4-2.

The nerves started jangling again though when Wickham made it 4-3 after a well-timed run beat our offside trap.

Nevertheless, a final 15 minute battling performance from the reserves ensured another win and, with the news that top of the table Elite had lost 4-0 to Pythons, the chance of winning the league remains a possibility!

Don’t forget! As next week both teams are at home @KGV, it’ll be the annual Taverners’ Festive Festival of Food and Football afterwards in ‘The Shed’. Festive attire in encouraged!!!

Team: Davies, McLaughlin, Risby, Fisk, Burgess(Warner D.), Herridge, Pilkington, Cunningham, Monaghan , Strutt., Stevens D.(Wootton).
Goals: Herridge, Stevens D., Strutt.

Reserves - Junior Cup

Taverners Res. 0, Hardy's 11

A Cup tie against Division 3’s high flying Hardy’s was always going to be tough, but a combination of injuries and unavailabilities of regular starting players compounded the situation.

However, despite conceding an early goal following some pinball in the penalty area, we settled down and tried to play our usual flowing football.

Everyone battled well in the first half and we managed to stifle the opposition, limiting them to just one more goal just before half-time whilst still managing to create a couple of chanced for ourselves.

The second half didn’t begin well. ‘Sticks’ Burrup was clearly fouled in the lead up to Hardy’s third goal, but no free kick was awarded.

This seemed to break our resolve and a combination of enforced changes, unenforced changes, errors, apathy, age and lack of fitness resulted in Hardy’s finishing worthy 11-0 victors and we wish them well in the next round.

It’s not all doom and gloom though! It was good to see both Matt Davis, returning after a back injury, and Andy ‘Panda’ Jacobs available for selection once more.

Now we are able to concentrate on the league, and with regulars returning creating competition for places, it should spur us on to maintaining our position in the league, and, who knows, possibly challenging for the top spot?

Impressive Reserves Hit Four Past Celtic!......17/11/2019

Reserves - Division 4

Taverners 4, Northam Celtic 1

Sometimes the words to describe and analyse a game are hard to find. I want you to know how it felt, who played well and why. I want to find something of interest for everyone who bothers to read these reports.

There is very little point in people like Bob and me having all this experience without passing some of it on.

I would highly recommend having a conversation with Bob about football as it used to be. He can take you back as far as the 1950’s.

My very first top-flight game was January 3rd 1970. Ipswich Town Vs. Manchester United at Portman Road. George Best and Bobby Charlton in real life!

Bob can tell you about seeing Ray Crawford, Sir Alf Ramsey and Ted Philips. Sadly none of these players ever wore a Taverners shirt.

So the answer to who played well is easy. If I had to be critical then we do still have fitness problems in the second half. Every game we go through a ten minute spell where we find ourselves up against it. But we got through it and the reality is that everyone played well.

I watched from my 18 yard box with pride as we played some of the best football I have seen at Taverners in many years. We started well when Josh McLaughlin refused to give up and scored from close range early in the game.

This was followed by another goal from Paul Strutt. Celtic were still strong and caused some problems which were dealt with by our defence. Communication was excellent and commitment to the game was total.

Rob Fisk and Craig Risby lead the line well. Bevan Burgess and Josh Mclaughlin were always available as an outlet to support the midfield in wide positions.

We played a 442 formation with Paul Strutt and Daren Stevens up front and they caused constant problems for the Celtic defence.

Everything was then held together by our incredible midfield; Grant Monagan and Gary Pilkington taking the wide positions to link with Josh and Bevan. Andy and Jack Lambert could then control and direct play from centre midfield.

Paul Strutt added his second and our third goal before Celtic had their spell where we did find ourselves defending.

For a few minutes Celtic looked stronger and a series of corners and one fierce shot from a free kick were dealt with comfortably.

We needed to reassert ourselves and this came with the goal of the game after some great work on the right between Andy, Jack and Gary. Josh Mclaughlin picked up the ball at the halfway line moving forward and delivering a great cross into the 18 yard box which was met by Daren Stevens who stooped to head the ball home with some power.

Celtic did score after the ball was headed back across goal from a corner. Jon Williams reacted first to beat the Celtic forward to the loose ball but his attempted clearance came off his knee and into the goal, but our fourth had finished the comeback from Celtic and we remained dominant for the remainder of the game.

Team: Hollinsworth, McLaughlin(Pearce), Risby, Fisk, Burgess(Williams), Pilkington G., Lambert A., Lambert Ja., Monghan, Strutt(Jordan), Stevens D.(Stevens E.).
Goals: McLaughlin, Stevens D., Strutt(2).

Mikey Hat-Trick Helps First Team to Victory!......03/11/2019

First Team - Division 1

Taverners 4, Elmsett Utd. 1

The first team entertained Elmsett United with three wins behind us and only the need to make one change from the previous week – a long time since that’s happened!

The early stages were end-to-end with the Tavs looking very promising on the break. We went close when Mikey Sneddon – fresh from receiving multiple club awards for his efforts last season – hit a post from an acute angle.

We were not to be denied and Mikey was again prominent – after some neat approach-work – breaking into the box and pulling the ball back for Lee Riley, in his own words, to simply pass the ball into the net.

The Tavs still held the one goal lead at the break and after the interval Elmsett forced the pace. However, we defended well with Tom Brooks blocking several good efforts. We caught Elmsett on the break via Brandon Burton’s clearance which saw Mikey Sneddon away to fire us into a 2-0 lead.

Better was to follow as a pass from David Spalding again sent Mikey away and he sped through to put Taverners 3-0 ahead.

The Tavs were well in charge and a good ball from Markeese Hudnell from the left back position saw the Elmsett centre half and goalkeeper get into a tangle under pressure from Mikey Sneddon and the striker swept away from them to run the ball into the net to complete an outstanding and well-deserved hat-trick

Elmsett had the final word with a consolation goal. They had previously been denied by a brilliant save from Brandon Burton (last year’s Manager’s Player) who tipped a shot onto the bar.

It was good that our fine performance was witnessed by visiting Taverners club president John Steward while Chairman Pat Elvin congratulated the players on the best display he had seen for some time; well done everyone.

Goals: Riley, Sneddon(3).

Cherry Tree Res.3, Taverners Res. 3 - RESULT EXPUNGED AS CHERRY TREE RES. WITHDRAWN - STATS & GOALS REMOVED

The dilemma I have every week is where to start and how to make this report more interesting than the last. As you will see from reports I rarely achieve this. But I do try. Writing the report is therapeutic. With a score of 3-3 you might wonder why I need therapy this week. Last season this would have been a good result. But losing a 3-0 lead is not something to celebrate. In writing these reports I hope that in some small part you might understand decisions and maybe travel along with me on the journey of still learning the game of football. Today I learnt yet more lessons. Some about managing a team and some about being a goalkeeper.

Not many of us get to experience being a goalkeeper. Firstly I have to say I really enjoyed playing there. Making saves is a real buzz. We have all had a game where as an individual you feel responsible for the outcome of a game. When you are an outfield player these responsibilities are rare. You can make a mistake on the halfway line and you have 10 other players around you to cover this mistake. As a goalkeeper this is no longer the case. You are the last man and mistakes cannot be covered. So what are some of the qualities you need. Bravery– At Every opportunity some idiot centre forward will fire the ball with some venom straight at you with no concern for you safety.

He will tackle you with studs first when it is your face that is nearest the ball. To him you are nothing more than an obstacle between him and the glory of scoring a goal. Experience– Putting on the gloves the first time does not make you a keeper. You have to learn how to position yourself, to know when to go and when to stay and a million and one other things. Don’t tell centre forwards this but as a keeper you are at a massive disadvantage. All you can do is to try to force the striker to make a mistake. If he is good, he will score. Today I learnt that from a corner if that pesky centre forward is marking you then move out. Own and control your 6-yard box. If you stay on your line then he is able to affect your freedom of movement. You might have players on the posts but you still have to be the last man and you are still responsible.

I learnt to continue to hold the right position around the goal when you are a pass back. If the defender loses the ball and you are out of position then that centre forward will take advantage of almost the whole goal to shoot at. I also learnt to put your foot firmly behind the ball when your defender does use you as a pass back option. It’s very embarrassing when the ball goes straight under your foot even if you do get back to clear it. The last lesson was when setting a wall to protect your goal from a direct free kick instruct all of them to JUMP!!! As the kick is taken. It makes them a bigger wall and almost impossible to beat at this level of football. The simple truth is that if I had this experience before today’s game then Cherrytree would not have scored a single goal.

I need this therapy today because in the first 45 minutes we were incredible. Everything we talk about doing to win a game we did. We scored three times. The first a back post header from Grant Monaghan. The second another far post header after a long throw from Craig Risby which was flicked on by Daren Stevens to find Darren Herridge at the far post. The third was a penalty tucked away by Paul Strutt after Jack Lambert was brought down in the box.

Important to mention. Daren Stevens was a constant threat. Very strong games from Grant Monaghan, Jack Lambert Rob Fisk and Paul Strutt. Sticks Burrup was solid as a rock at centre half. Cherrytree were by far the worst team we have played this season. This game was won. All we had to do was to continue exactly as we were. This thought was a big managerial mistake. Maybe the whole team thought the game was over. But Cherrytree did not. They took advantage of our complacency throughout the second half and scored three times to draw the game. Without therapy this game will live with me for some weeks, as our next game is not until 17thNovember.

Goals: Brooks, Hudnell(2), Pasque.

Reserves - Division 4

Taverners Res. 3, The Feathers Res. 2

It is hard to explain the difference at Taverners Reserves. Go back just one season and you would not believe we could suddenly be a top three team.

Look at our squad and you will not see major changes. There are 5 new players but this is not a revolution created by new young bloods.

The start of the season started just like any other. I believe every season that we can compete. Our football is not always the greatest.

We ride our luck in some games. But this season we are getting a few lucky breaks. This season we are the team that scores the last minute winner.

This season we can still win a game after going behind. I know it can change very quickly. We have to continue to believe we are as good as any team in this league.

After just 20 minutes on Sunday things were not going our way. It started with an uncharacteristic mistake which gifted Feathers their first goal.

Their second was a speculative shot from 25 yards which hit both posts to go in. We halted their progress but we were not really threatening their goal.

However, we were creating chances. Jon Williams making his debut drove into the 18yrd box and was fouled. The resulting penalty awarded was scored with perfect precision by Paul Strutt.

Feathers lost control a little at this point. The resulting argument saw their linesman being sent off. The game began to change and Feathers were visably rattled and lost concentration.

We talked about keeping our heads in the 2nd half. It was important not to allow ourselves to be dragged into their problems. The 2nd half went exactly to plan.

As they lost more control, we gained. Feathers finished the game with two players sent off and one in the sin bin.

We ended with two more penalties both converted by Paul Strutt. We had total possession and more chances to go further ahead but the final result was all we needed. A 3-2 home win and another 3 points.

No complacency here. Every game is as important as the last one.

Team: Stevens D., McLaughlin, Lambert, Southgate, Cunningham, Monaghan, Strutt, Fisk, Wootton(Stevens E.), Williams, Herridge.
Goals: Strutt(3).

First Six Point Sunday of Season!......20/10/2019

First Team - Division 1

Taverners 3, Eastern Elec. Old Boys 1

As usual a few team changes were needed but we began our home match again EE Old Boys in confident style and in an early attack Mikey Sneddon hit the post after combining well with Lee Riley.

We deservedly took the lead midway through the first half. Wayne Jordan – making his first appearance after injury – played a deep free kick into the box and the EE goalkeeper, under pressure from Tom Brooks only half cleared. Another attempted clearance found Markeese Hudnell outside the box and he coolly volleyed the ball high into the net.

Both teams had their moments but, when called upon, our defence stood firm with Zack Archer impressing on his second first team outing. Going forward, we played some fine football with Dan Pasque tireless in midfield.

A hot shot from Mikey Sneddon was only parried by the EE keeper and Lee Riley was coolness itself as he worked a space for himself, surrounded by defenders, and tucked a shot into the corner for 2-0.

With our tails up, we went further ahead. ‘Keesey’ swung in a cross and Dan Pasque was clearly fouled as he challenged at the far post. Tom Brooks fired home the spot kick.

EE came back into the game and, although Brandon Burton made one fine save from a free kick, he was helpless as they pulled a goal back.

A late Taverners ‘sin bin’ gave EE more impetus but we defended well and held on for our first league win of the season.

Team: Burton, Spalding (A Warner), Brooks, Archer, High, Tacey, Pasque, Jordan, Hudnell, Riley, Sneddon
Goals: Brooks, Hudnell, Riley.

Reserves - Division 4

Trinity FC 0, Taverners Res. 1

If you go back just one year you would find us in the same position as Trinity with no points. So the approach to this game was not one of an easy 3 points.

I knew Trinity were better than their results as we were last season. They have had problems with numbers but they had obviously signed on a few players.

They were not the side we would have expected to find at the bottom of the league. We were not the side they would have normally met. With four key players missing from our normal starting line up it was always going to be a little difficult.

The good thing this season is that we do have some strength in our squad to adapt when others are not available.

A debut for Callum Compton this week and we are looking to bring two more players into the Taverners squad for next week.

The game started with Trinity taking the lion share of possession. We were playing a new formation to suit the players available. Unfortunately this required a lot more fitness and commitment from our front three than we had.

Trinity were very poor in the final third and this in reality gave us the 3 points.

We did create a few chances. A through ball found Ethan Stevens on the edge of the 18 yard box and with the ball bouncing Ethan gently lobbed the on coming keeper to score his first ever goal for Taverners.

We were losing the battle in midfield and at halftime we changed back to a 442 formation.

Our fitness levels were a concern and had to bring in fresh legs with two substitutions. Trinity were causing us problems but we dealt with them throughout the game.

Daren Stevens in goal made two excellent saves and Sticks Burrup had an excellent game at the centre of the back four. Grant Monaghan was very solid at left full back.

More pressure on our fitness with 15 minutes to go when Josh McLaughlin was sin binned and we had to rearrange to cope with finishing the game with ten men.

Although Trinity did push hard we did cope very well through to the end of the game. This was 3 hard earned points and that is exactly how we need to move forward. The game we become complacent is the game we will lose.

Team: Stevens D., McLaughlin, Burrup, Burgess, Monaghan, Strutt, Southgate, Cunningham(Wootton), Stevens E.(Compton), Herridge, Hollinsworth.
Goal: Stevens E.

First Team's First Win of Season in Sunday Shield Second Round!......12/10/2019

First Team - Sunday Shield 2nd Round

FC Monarchs 1, Taverners 2

The first team got off to a flying start in their Sunday Shield 2nd round tie away to Monarchs, scoring in the second minute when Lee Riley intercepted a back pass and netted from the tightest of angles.

Any hope that this would be an easy win was quickly discounted as Monarchs came back at us strongly and we were forced on the defensive time and again.

However, our defence stood firm with debutants Dan Goddard and Zack Archer doing well at the heart of our back four.

Tom Brooks was given more freedom to go forward and he made the score 2-0 with a left footed effort from the edge of the box following a Lee Riley corner.

Brandon Burton made several good saves but he was helpless when Monarchs pulled a goal back 15 minutes from time and this made for an edgy closing stage which we survived to progress to the next round.

Both Lee Riley and Tom Brooks had earlier seen headers narrowly off-target.

It was heartening to secure our first win of the season which was a product of hard work and endeavour in a scrappy game.

Team: Burton, Spalding, Archer, Goddard, High, Pasque, Fisk (Sub: Stevens), Brooks, Hudnell, Riley, Tacey.

Goals: Brooks, Riley.

Reserves Pinch Points from Pythons!......29/09/2019

First Team - Division 1

Playford 2, Taverners 1

As usual, the Tavs’ team showed a number of changes as we adopted a 4-3.3 line-up on our visit to Playford’s Farlingaye School ground.

Playford enjoyed much of the play early on, winning a series of corners which we defended well. Jawa Tacey made one great block to prevent a goal.

We looked tidy on the break and went close when a cross from Mikey Sneddon flew across the goal while Markeese Hudnell saw a fine header denied by a brilliant save.

Having given a good account of ourselves in the first half, it was disappointing when Playford took the lead, pouncing on a defensive error. Their first shot was well saved by Brandon Burton but the rebound was put away from close range.

The second half began badly, with a second goal being conceded early on but we kept battling away and finally pulled a goal back when David Spalding’s low cross led to Mikey Sneddon firing low into the corner.

At the other end, Playford hit a post while Brandon pulled off several good saves.

We just failed to grab the equaliser which – on the balance of play – we felt we deserved and our fourth defeat running had a familiar look to it: always in the game but punished for mistakes and failing to threaten the opposition goal regularly enough.

Team: Burton, Tacey, Brooks, Durrell, Pilkington, Boosey, Fisk (Spalding), Riley, Pasque, Sneddon, Hudnell. Goal: Sneddon

Reserves - Division 4

Ipswich Pythons 0, Taverners Res. 1

Such an incredible result. I always knew Pythons would be a difficult game. So this result is enormous. When I sat down to write the report I just could not find the words. Something was blocking my thoughts.

Trips to Gainsborough Sports are a regular thing. You feel like you are entering a club to which you are an outsider. They all know each other, they all talk about their games. Pythons were not gracious in defeat. They were blaming everything but themselves.

I do not expect anyone to like being beaten but I do expect you to accept it like a sportsman. "If you can't say something nice then say nothing at all."

But the thing blocking my enjoyment of this great result was the discussion I heard between Pythons and Ipswich Elite. Elite couldn't believe we beat Pythons saying we were a poor side.

This should not bother me after this result but it did. I'm over it now and determined to make them eat their words this coming Sunday.

So we move on. Only one mistake this season losing to Rosary Res. Selection has been the key and it has been good to involve the committee in helping me to get this right.

We do not have the same opinions of our best 11 but it is good to listen to other peoples views and have a check on yourself that you are considering all the options.

Pythons as expected gave us a game. But for all of their work they never really troubled us.

Once again Zack Archer had a strong game at centre half as did Duncan Southgate. Our midfield was much stronger this week with the return of Jack Lambert, Paul Strutt and Grant Monaghan. They worked hard throughout the game.

We do still have to work harder on that final ball. We make ground and create opportunities but do not always deliver the quality we need on the final ball.

We did however deliver from set pieces and caused Pythons a lot of trouble mainly from corners.

We had a number of chances from open play. Jack Lambert went close when one on one with the keeper.

The game looked like there was not going to be a breakthrough. With time running out we continued to press but although in a panic, Pythons defence held firm.

With just two minutes of time left we again caused Pythons defence to panic. But this time they failed to clear and the ball dropped in the 6 yard box to Darren Herridge who turned to stab the ball home.

It is often the case when you take a late lead that you defend rather than continue playing the way you were. This caused Pythons to come at us with some purpose. Although they did hit the post and cause a goalmouth scramble we held firm and ran out worthy winners.

Team: Stevens D., Pearson J., Southgate, Archer, Burgess(Stevens E.), McLaughlin(Herridge), Lambert A., Strutt(Wootton), Monaghan , Lambert Ja., Hollinsworth.

I wish you could bottle all that it takes to produce a good team performance.

We lost Matt Davis to a back spasm in the warm up. Thankfully Sticks Burrup stepped forward to take the gloves and played a great game in goal.

The truth is that we can still play better. The truth is that we could have scored more. But the truth is we totally dominated this game.

We actually went 1-0 down early on but even at that point it was very obvious that all we had to do was to play to our strengths and we would win this game.

We got back into the game very quickly and had multiple chances in and around the six-yard box. The breakthrough came when Gary Pilkington sent the ball wide to Bevan Burgess, Bevan in turn found Trevor Hollinsworth wide on the left and his pin point cross was met at the far post by Daren Stevens to head home with some power.

We deservedly took the lead from a Craig Risby long throw, which was met by Daren Stevens at the front post. The ball ran through to the far post where a Hintlesham player chested the ball inot his own net.

There was very little to say at half time. We knew what we had done wrong and knew how to continue to dominate this game. Even with some very close decisions on the offside rule we were finding ourselves in space and causing problems.

There were some very good performances especially from Zack Archer making his debut at centre back.

We went further ahead when a clearance from the keeper was hit low. Daren Stevens re directed the ball into the path of Andy Lambert. Seeing the keeper way of his line Andy hit a first time shot from over 50 yards, which sailed over the keeper and into the open net.

Now in total control we attacked again and again. Trevor Hollinsworth scored with a diving header at the far post from a Josh McLaughlin cross. Josh added another stabbing home an Ethan Stevens cross.

Hintelsham occasionally broke out but never really troubled our defence. They were awarded a very confusing penalty but the kick was well saved by Sticks Burrup.

We spent the remaining 15 minutes not really pressing home our advantage. We continued to create chances but we were not choosing the right ball and often our shots were from further out which often happens when you have a strong lead.

We did score again to make it 6-1 when a miss hit cross should have been dealt with by the keeper but he got confused with his centre half and neither dealt with the ball. It ran through to the waiting Trevor Hollinsworth to tap home.

Reserves Out of County Cup!......15/09/2019

Reserves - Sunday Trophy

Taverners Res. 1, Ipswich Elite 6

I cannot deny I hate losing. I have never in my life walked out onto a field with the thought that I could not win. No matter what the odds. I grew up reading Roy of The Rovers, watched films like Escape To Victory and sang songs like Back Home by the England 1970 squad. When I was allowed I would stay up to watch my heroes on the TV. Players like Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Charlton, Pele, George Best, Bobby Moore. As a child these people taught me to win. I was 7 years old when England won the World Cup at Wembley. I was nine when I watched Manchester United with Bobby Charlton and George Best win the European Cup in 1968. I lived for football and just did not understand the concept of defeat. Whatever level I played at from Cornard Rec to The Priory stadium Sudbury, from Layer Road to Portman Road. The feeling of running out onto the pitch has always been special to me. Back in the day I would have played seven days a week, twice a day if I could.

I once ran a half marathon on a Saturday morning, in the afternoon I played for Sudbury Town in the Eastern Counties league, on the Sunday morning I played for Little Waldingfield in the Sunday League and in the afternoon I played in a pro am charity match.

All my life I have played football. I have played hung over so bad I could hardly walk, I played with a broken arm in plaster. I once cancelled a holiday flight because my wife had booked the flight on a Sunday morning.

I have refused to go to weddings. I played football the day my own daughter was christened turning up at the christening with minutes to spare fully suited with the mud and sweat underneath my suit.

So when I walk away from the pitch in silence after a defeat you have to understand it hurts me. We may not have deserved the defeat. There maybe a more in depth story to the game but it takes me a while to see it clearly.

Sunday we met a team who simply had one very serious striker in James Parker. He alone tore us apart with three goals. We were not playing too badly. Yes we made mistakes but so did they. The difference was that they had ten men who’s total aim was to win the ball and get it to the James Parker.

They were not a bad side but without Parker they had nothing out of the ordinary.

It is true to say that we are still looking to find our first 11. We have now reached the point where we lose all our university players as they return to education all over the country. But it is my hope that we will do very well in this league this year.

With the help of the selection committee we will settle on a good backbone to our side.

Players have to be honest about their own abilities. We all have to accept our own limitations. But together we can make this a successful season for Taverners Reserves.

We did better in the second half and scored after Callum Andrews was fouled in the area. Paul Strutt put away the penalty.

If we could have found the solution to James Parker early in the game we could have got a much better result. The score tells you we were beaten 6-1 but the game was much closer. We need to find that striker. We need a goal threat and we need all players to commit to Taverners as much as their lives will allow. I don’t expect you to be like me but I do ask that you understand how football makes me feel.

Team: Davis, Pearce(Cunningham), Risby, Stevens D., Monaghan, Pilkington W.(Stevens E.), Lambert A., Pilkington G., Strutt(Burgess), Andrews C., Herridge(Hollinsworth).
Goal: Strutt.

Blank Sunday!......08/09/2019

First Team - Division 1

Laxfield Utd 3, Taverners 0

Another morning of frustration after a long trip to tough opponents Laxfield United.

We began well but, as the previous week, were unable to accept the half chances which came our way and once again conceded two quick goals which virtually settled the match. The first came from a far post header from a corner (or should it have been a goal kick?) and then a counter attack sliced through our defence and it was 2-0.

Undeterred, we came back and Dan Pasque’s pace and determination caught the eye out on the right, well supported by Mike Durrell at right back. However, our approach-work petered out in the last third and our nearest effort was a snap shot from Markeese Hudnell which narrowly cleared the bar with the keeper beaten.

Liam Siggers made a series of fine saves throughout.

The second half saw us battling hard and keeping in the game but chances were few and far between, the only score coming from Laxfield was we pressed forward.

Team: Siggers, High, Brooks, Jacobs A., Jordan(Goddard), Hudnell(Boosey), Durrell, Pasque, Pilkington G.(Pilkington W.), Riley, Jacobs R.

Reserves - Division 4

Taverners Res. 2, Rosary CC Res. 4

I hate the thought that I might be repeating myself. People might sit there at home reading this saying there he goes with the same old story. But I truly believed this season would be a new story. I fully believed with the team behind me believing in themselves we could really compete this season. My aim is to win the league. Our first game had it’s faults but even with those faults we came through. So when we go out against a team we beat pretty easily in a pre season friendly and lose my disappointment is indescribable.

I made it very clear that this was a bigger test than the previous week because they have nothing to lose. They already know we are better than them. Unfortunately maybe we thought the win in the friendly would mean this result would be ours.

I spoke before the game about set pieces and that I believed they would be our way of winning the game. We had enough set pieces to win the game, nine in total. To prove the point we could have and should have scored from three of them. We failed to convert two in the first half and one in the second. These were not half chances they were absolute sitters.

How would that have changed the game? We just do not know.

We were missing three important players who are tattooed onto the team sheet. They most definitely would have made a difference. But I hoped that our squad would be strong enough to cope with a bit of player rotation.

So the mistake has to be in selection. Did the committee and I get it wrong? Did we fall into the trap of letting our hearts rule our heads? If we had not selected this side who would we have included instead? I do not believe we got it wrong. I believe that from the 14 players in the squad 7 of them did not play to their potential today.

Now the dilemma is do I stick with these players or do I do what I believe is right and insure we field the best 11 we can no matter who I have to change . We are playing top of the league next. They have a plus 15 goal difference from just two games. We cannot afford to sit back and hope it will be ok. So committee be prepared to make the changes with me. We will put our best 11 on the field from minute one. We will give ourselves the best chance to get the result we need.

What about the game? Well it’s not something I want to dwell on too long.

Rosary gave us a couple of warning shots early on. To come through these unscathed is a good sign. But then suddenly we gifted them two goals. To describe them is just torture. They did not work for them or earn them. We simply gave them the lead. I hoped this would wake us up and to some extent it did. We scored through Ashley Wooten after an Ethan Stevens through ball found him in the 18 yard box and he slotted the ball home.

But again we let them go further ahead gifting them another goal. Again we wake up. We were putting them under pressure with the long throws from Craig Risby and we scored when one of the throw ins bounced in the six yard box over the keeper for Darren Herridge to head over the line. We had chances from set pieces but never had the right person there to finish them. And again they scored to make it 4-2.

Team: Davis, Cunningham, Risby, Stevens D., Burgess(Hua), Stevens E.(McLaughlin), Southgate, Strutt, Monaghan, Wootton(Hollinsworth), Herridge.
Goals: Herridge, Wootton.

Herridge Hat-trick and Strutt Sizzler Secure points for Reserves......01/09/2019

First Team - Division 1

Taverners 1, Great Blakenham Chequers 3

The Tavs began the league season with several new faces in the side and it was, therefore, not surprising that we took a time to settle; we were also making our debut at the club’s new home King George V, Whitton United’s ground.

Gradually we came into the game and looked lively going forward with Ryan Jacobs showing up well wide on the right. Blakenham took control with two quick goals; the first a marvellous shot from long range which was a goal from the moment it left the midfielder’s boot. The second was a penalty.

We came back and, with the referee showing great consistency on hand-ball decisions, we were rewarded with a spot –kick for a handling offence and Lee Riley fired home in great style.

Unfortunately, a muddle at the back saw Blakenham net number three.

The second half saw defences well in charge. We rarely threatened, our best effort being a cross-shot from Jawa Tacey which flew just wide of the far post.

Reserves - Division 4

Phoenix FC 5, Taverners Res. 6

For all the times we fought back only to lose the game to a cruel late goal, this was a result we deserved!

We talked before the game about the banana skin game that was in front of us. Last season Phoenix were a bad side. This was an ideal first game for us. A game we could win, but we had to concentrate.

Phoenix, however, were not the team we played last year. They had added some players who could really play and within 5 mins we were 1-0 down.

Although it was not an ideal start it did wake us up. We equalised after Jack Lambert was fouled in the box and Paul Strutt stepped up to score the penalty.

We then took the lead when Jack Lambert made space on the 18 yard line to shoot and score. Phoenix came back with a penalty of their own after Andy Lambert was adjudged to have fouled in the box.

It looked a clean tackle to me and the rest of the team. Andy protested and he was our first ever Sin Bin.

With Andy off for 10 minutes we restructured and did well taking the lead before halftime when Paul Strutt gained possession 30 yards out. He made space and struck a superb half volley from over 20 yards hitting the underside of the bar and in.

The second half saw us totally collapse and Phoenix scored three times without return. We truly looked sunk at 5-3 down. They were growing in confidence and we were just not firing.

Time to make the substitutions. It’s not the players you replace. It is the renewed enthusiasm. It is changing something because whatever it is you are doing, it is not right.

New fight, new vigor, and it worked. Andy Lambert pushed into midfield leaving a back three. Suddenly we were pushing forward and Phoenix had no answer for the pressure.

Darren Herridge completed his hat trick in just 15 minutes. His third and the winner was hit with some venom into the roof of the net from 8 yards.

In reality we could have had more goals. Phoenix did pressure us towards the end but some incredible goalkeeping from Matt Davis and some superb defending especially a goal line clearance from Duncan Southgate.

We held out for the remaining few minutes for the deserved win.

Team: Davis, Pilkington W.(Risby), Lambert A., Stevens D., Burgess(Cunningham), Herridge, Southgate, Strutt, Lambert Ja., Andrews C., Hollinsworth(Stevens E.).
Goal: Herridge(3), Lambert Ja., Strutt(2).
