Sorrel Horse 1, Taverners Res 4
The short trip to Blakenham was a pleasant change from the long trips we have experienced over the last few weeks. We had a few players missing but still were able to field a good side.
Sorrel had only lost two games all season so we were expecting a tough game. The opening exchanges saw Taverners pressing. It was just the final ball each time that let us down.
The pass was always too long or the cross too short. Sorrel did not really bother us defensively and at half time it was 0-0.
The second half started the same with Taverners having the best chances. It was Sorrel though who took the lead against the run of play. The referee stopped an attack with a dreadful decision which he apologised for.
The resulting free kick lead to a corner which was not cleared and Sorrel took the lead. A few minutes later it looked even worse when Geoff Leeks handled just inside the box to give them a penalty.
It looked like our luck was going to leave us once again, but a very badly taken penalty saw them miss by some distance.
Within five minutes Taverners won a corner which Paul Strutt fired into the near post to be met by Tem Atabaki who headed into the far corner.
Taverners were now on the offensive. Another corner this time by Trevor Hollinsworth was swung into the near post where a desperate effort to clear from the line only saw the defender fail to handle the ball away.
With the 2-1 lead Taverners took full control and Paul Strutt went very close with a solo effort. He then scored our third when he collected the ball on the edge of the 18 yard box, beat one player with a fine dummy to shot into the bottom left hand corner.
The score line was almost complete when Vaughn Gledhill chased down a through ball tackling the keeper to leave him with a simple tap in, with his head!
Taverners did score again but in a complete mystery it was disallowed for offside even though Vaughn was clearly 6 yards onside when he headed it.
Another fine result taking us closer to safety.
